I'm into photography and do photo editing so I need a panel that I can dial in with my calibrator and that will display true colors, I also go into and out of gaming phases and I feel one coming on. I don't want to go smaller than 24" and would naturally like to go as large as I can, I have a 9800 GTX video card. I'd be very grateful for some good advice as I need to jump on this sooner than I'd like and won't really have time to fully research my decision. Thanks, Mike

The BenQ FP241VW is around $500 and that's a good choice... http://benq.us/products/LCD/?product=671

Other than that you're stuck with TNs at 24" which I don't recommend for photo editing. But if you have to, the BenQ G2400WD or Samsung 2493HM is fine.

So the monitor looks gorgeous, and there are no dead pixels... but I have a problem... and I think it is a big one since I am a graphics designer. For example if there is a blue colored object on my screen, when I scroll down, it lighter in color!

From what I remember of my VX2235, I had no such issues before!

Is this backlight bleeding? Will it get better on its own? Please assist.

It's a lack of uniformity or a viewing angle issue. I don't think it will get better over time, unfortunately. Not sure what else to tell you.

But when he drags his windows around, there is no white ghosting or trial behind test/images.

I notice the white trail quite evidently in games like Need for Speed

Does this happen on all Samsung 2232GW's? Anyone else with this model screen experience the same lag?

This is called overshoot or RTC artifacts/error. I believe certain 2232GWs have AUO or CMO panels and it happens on these because Samsung has not tuned this monitor to use those panels properly.

I was leaning towards the BenQ E2200HD, but after reading this thread, I'm wondering if maybe the LG L227WT would be a better choice. To me, they look like they are almost the same with the main differences lying in the features (16:10 vs. 16:9, HDMI, Speakers, etc.). Is there a difference between these two LCDs or the panels that they use that I am missing and is significant enough to give one an advantage over the other given what I'm going to use it for? Thanks in advance for the help.

Edit: FWIW, I will be upgrading from a Dell 1901 FP.

I haven't seen a good in-depth review of the E2200 yet so I have to recommend the L227WT.

The LG uses a panel from LG Display while the BenQ probably uses an AU Optronics panel. Both make some good panels so who knows really...but the LG is certainly tried and true, even by me.

Acer H213H bmid

And I know Samsung and LG have similar models on the way.

I will be using this for gaming, HDMI for Xbox 360, and general use.

Right now I'm leaning towards the BenQ, but there is so little review information out there that I'm reluctant to make any decisions. Does anyone have any input/ info?

I think the BenQ is by far the safest choice, just based on their track record. But unfortunately I can't tell you anything except experience on this one. I have not seen reviews of any of these.

It's a tiny gray spot, it's not black, it doesn't show up on black backgrounds, and it never changes colors. From what I can deduce, it's neither a dead or stuck pixel. I'm trying to figure out what this is, so I can try to remedy the situation. If anyone could provide some information, that would be greatly appreciated.

It's probably dust either on the inside or outside, although I'm almost certain that doesn't help you much. Sorry. If it's not, I am not sure what it is.

The BenQ G2400WD has a .27 pitch. Any advantages to the .022 pitch decrease at 1.5-2.5 ft viewing distance?

Thank you. I fixed the specs link.

I think .248 at 1920x1080 is awful small at least for general use. But it could be great for multimedia. The smaller pixel pitch the better, for multimedia really.

General use is usually more suited to a large pixel pitch.

I wouldn't rule it out. It used to be about $400.

If I don?t end up with the Lenovo, I?m trying to choose from the Samsung 2233bw, 2253bw, and the 2343bwx. I can get them at $179, $249, and $249 respectively. Newegg has a higher rating for the 2253bw over the 2233bw, but I can?t seem to find any opinions on the 2343bwx other than a thread on HardForum. Which of these 3 would be the best choice for watching HD movies? Should I also consider the Samsung T220 or LG L227WTG-PF?

Honestly the L227 is and always has been a great choice.

The T220 has gotten favorable reviews too at DigitalVersus and X-Bit. I will probably be recommending some of Samsung's ToC series soon. The L227 is wide gamut while the T220 is not, actually. DigitalVersus reported Samsung saying they would not ever continue the panel lottery and that they had learned their lesson, so we'll see...

Hello, I'm looking for a new LCD monitor that's around 24" and around $400. I'll be using it primarily for internet and photo processing. I know I don't want a TN panel and that IPS is the preferred type, but I can't seem to find any. I'm not after the absolute best which is obvious because of my price ($400), but I don't want to be disappointed either. I'll spend more, but only if it will make a substantial difference. I would like to buy from a local store (Best Buy, Micro Center, Comp USA, Circuit City, etc.) if at all possible.

Am I asking for too much for only $400 or am I just not finding the right monitors?

Thanks.

Hey guys,

I have found the need to make some major changes to the OP given the current market, my current opinions, and also for my and others' convenience. I've probably waited too long to do many of these changes. First of all, the HTPC section is basically dead. It's pretty much the "LCD TV" section and I don't keep up with reviews of those too much. I still love keeping up with the technology but am not too interested in LCD TVs since many of them don't have serious issues or lack of features like monitors still do. Buying a TV at the store is easier than buying a monitor at the store. (Although, of course, if you're extremely enthusiastic and picky about LCD TVs you may this statement is false.) TVs also have far more on-display PVA or IPS panels than monitors do.

I'm trying to make it easier still for the average joe to find an LCD. Listing 6-bit+Hi-FRC and the specific model number from AUO or LG doesn't really help that. I'm getting rid of this information. 8-bit is now hopelessly ambiguous (see here). That's after I found out even my LCD2690 may be doing FRC (see the patterns in my review). And LCDs using what he calls "static dithering"; "simple temporal dithering" will as much as possible not be recommended; these are the bad, annoying, and noticeable methods. Almost all LCDs today use more advanced temporal dithering, also called Hi-FRC, so it's not an issue. People can't really notice Hi-FRC. Since panel numbers change and revisions change, I'm getting rid of the specific panel type information. That can be researched very easily elsewhere if you need it, and the panel searching resources like flatpanels.dk/panels.php and tftcentral will remain linked in the OP's useful links section.

The Gaming section never really has been solid. It went from being no strict requirements to being under one frame max to being under one from avg, 2 frames max, and now simply to being <=2 frames max. I have ascertained that 2 frames of input lag is the cut-off and that's just how it's going to be. And I realize people have different opinions about that...that's fine. We can't mislead people into thinking 70% of the monitors out there are unsuitable for gaming because this is quite elitist. When you take the part of those 70% that have a brand name, a good default color setup, and good feature set, you have a very low number of monitors to recommend. We cannot act like we being so picky as to seem obsessive and bothersome. We are only trying to be a little selective and helpful when it comes to picking out features and assets in a monitor. (and actually I'm still unsure whether to make an actual cut-off of 2 frames or just do it like I used to by judgment)

I also realize a lot of people have been asking 'what about LCD x21kd00043k' or 'LCD ysdas0i3k'......as much as I'd love to know everything about every model out there, I just don't. I could reply to these and say "I just don't know", or just ignore them. So if I ignore your post about something don't take it personally. I probably know nothing more about the LCD than you do, mainly due to a lack of pro reviews as the famous saying goes. Remember, I am primarily a collator, not a reviewer. Your resources are the same as mine and I do not receive review samples nor is it likely I will ever. (However, any LCD I pick up will certainly be reviewed pretty in-depth.) I mean it when I say I don't have any more info on it than you do.

Last but not least, the new entries will look like the following:

Name, Size, Res, Aspect, Panel Type, Image Delay (only prad, tftcentral), Spec Sheet, Prad 'More Info', Inputs (including HDCP), Ergonomics, Scaling modes, Notes, Price (major US retailers like Newegg,Amazon,Buy.com,Circuit City,Best Buy,HP,Dell only, no more Froogle)

I'm not using DigitalVersus as an input lag source anymore. Their figures don't coincide with other sources, sadly enough. I can't keep becoming DigitalVersus's damage control. I still trust their reviews and other figures to a certain extent. There could be regional differences at work.

I might decide to prune some of the older models I have up there, since frankly, they don't need to clutter the list when several better models are above them. I'm sorry about those for whom the older models may still be useful, like those who live outside the US where newer models aren't as prevalent. I have to take a utilitarian approach when it comes to the OP, but you can still inquire and I will help you find the best LCD in your area.

A lot of people want info about VESA mounting or pivoting. That information will be easily accessible now. And HDMI, DisplayPort, etc...
I'm also going to try and list the scaling modes like 1:1, stretch, aspect ratio scaling. Because the 1920x1200 DSP chart never got updated anyways, and this info should be available for any size monitor.

Category names are going to stay the same. I like the setup. Except the HTPC section cannot be updated or at least I can make no guarantees about keeping this section up to date. Really, it's always been that way. Office Work will now only contain matte LCDs and some of the huge expensive LCDs will be out of the list. NEC's LCD3090 is simply overkill for typing Word documents. Gaming is going to be less strict. All categories other than HTPC are being updated as much as possible and should be current with the market.

If you have serious objections to any of that then let me know, otherwise I'm going to push the gas and go full speed ahead with the new plan.

With that, the LCD Thread can continue and be updated like usual. Happy holidays.

But really, I needed to post about all this last month. And it may be awhile till these changes really take effect but I have a month off soon sooo.... This thread's still really important to me and I intend to keep it updated until eternity, or I mean until FED/SED/OLEDs come out...

P.S. here is the upcoming, new, pruned recommendations list:

Due to the intense repetition of several models on the list, I'm also thinking of redoing the model list as a reverse lookup, as in:

HP LP2065: good for sRGB Photo Editing, Multimedia, Office Work....like I said same category names or maybe some rating system incorporating them.

This would mean easier updates, less errors. Makes more sense. People don't just use their PC for one purpose.

Edit: Never mind, the price cut must have been a quick mistake. Never seen Newegg do that before. It's still at 369.99

The BenQ G2400WD just took a massive price cut of $80 at Newegg, bringing it down to $289.99. Several reviewers had problems using 1:1 pixel mapping over vga with the Xbox 360.

Yes, it always had this problem with 1920x1080 over VGA. Other resolutions worked fine though. This affected the G2400W/G2400WD and V2400W over their lifespan.

If memory serves me, I believe the BK just means "Black." Of course, I thought this monitor only came in black...

The only other option on the model name that I know of is the "SV" which is for the SpectraView calibrator.

About the Benq G or E2400WD--do ALL TN panels hvae the brithness shift where the bottom half of the screen is brighter than the top? That's the only gripe I have w/ this Sammy T240. But I'm willing to drop it for the Benq otherwise..

But with the splendid modes you can access those settings, and change and save any setting. So now I'm running in one splendid modes with most of the settings changed - including that vibrancy (something like that). I now have the contrast at 50% and brightness still at 0%.

Perhaps I came across a bit harsh in my first post. Of course, you can read text and if this was your only monitor, you might not notice that it isn't quite as clear as it could be. But since I have others to compare, I have to be honest that I don't recommend the Asus if you are going to do office type work.

BTW, my monitors at work are HP LP1965 - another model which you recommend. They are awesome for text (not sure about colors compared to Asus).

No not harsh I'm just awful surprised, that's all. I see that other people on Newegg say the same thing so I'll remove it from Office Work. Sorry for your bad experience but thank you for letting me know about it.

I wish that I could see the LCDs I recommend first-hand, but unfortunately that's usually not possible so I have to make do with the resources available. Sometimes they are wrong, although I usually trust X-Bit religiously. Maybe the unit they got was different.

First, I want to thank you XT Knight, because you do everyone a great service by maintaining this thread.

And I just wanted to add that I've discovered that turning down the brightness via the Nvidia control panel does help in legibility of black text on light backgrounds for the Asus. Not great, but better. So I recommend others try it if they are in a similar situation. (That probably has been mentioned in this thread already, but thought I'd repeat it). However, this solution isn't ideal because some applications come out as too dark - for example I was playing Galactic Civilizations II in window mode which has a lot of black with some light text, and it was quite dark. Running that game in full screen mode causes that Nvidia control panel setting to NOT be used, so it looks fine in full screen.

It looks like it adds dynamic contrast. Not sure what else is new. I'm probably going to simply change VW222u to VW224u; these should be similar enough.

First of all, I really appreciate your answering my question.

I have to say, that in terms of color, the T220 is quite quite good. When I look at the colors submenu on photoshop, it looks quite good. But other problems have now popped up.

For example, if I move my mouse on a light colored background, I can see a distinctive white shadow trailing behind. And the uniformity thing may have actually gotten worse...

Then I tried gaming on it. I played Crysis, and it was quite good with no problems. The blacks were excellent etc.

Then I tried Far Cry 2, and I got some strange issues. Whenever I saw an explosion on screen, I saw a big orange colored shadow that covered it. It was something I hadn't seen before... certainly.

Anyway, I just checked, and it is clear I got the C-panel. I really trusted Digital Versus on this one..

I am going to go and see if I can get this changed for another piece...

BTW, I have the following available to me... any opinions:

http://www.galaxy.com.pk/ (assume the Asus 22'' isn't...)

Which of these monitors would be best suited for photo editing? The Acer is considerably cheaper, but I'll pay the extra money if it's worth it.

Acer P241WD
Gateway FHD2401
HP w2408h

Thanks.

Guys, i'm looking for a new 22' or 21.5' monitor (16:9) @ around $250 , I'm gonna use it for Gaming (PC and Consoles), Movies(HD and SD), Normal Photoshop(not a pro!), video editing, etc.

I'm hoping that the picture be sharp, good colors, contrast, etc. Since I mostly use it for Gaming, a TN would be alright, moreover I don't wish to splurge on just a display.. But I'm confused if I should go for a 16:9 or a 16:10 monitor, I mainly considered this because of the extra pixels over other 22' which tend to be @ 1650x1050. Will I miss out on the size of the display or is the .5' difference just minimal?

I have my eyes set on the E2200HD, which has a 16:9 aspect-ratio and I do know that its a TN, its not gonna be a problem since I'd just sit in front of it and i'm also attracted by the 1080p tag on it.

Here are some reviews, i'd found.

http://www.anandtech.com/displays/showdoc.aspx?i=3449

http://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/...49691195;pid;6900;pt;1

And here's an user review of it,

http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1359320

P.S.: I live in India, so L227 and other monitors are not available here, .. But, this one is and costs the INR equivalent of $250. Thanks in advance guys!

So something strange happened. I was watching a video on my comp and I was getting a lot of weird shadowy crap like before... and decided I'd try without the RTA option... and lo behold... the shadowy crap is GONE.

The T220 is far more tolerable now, except for the weird color uniformity thing.

Strange thing is that Digital Versus asks you to keep RTA at level 2... so I am a little confused here.

Anyway the monitor has gone from a C to a solid B+ for me. If I can find another one that doesn't have the color uniformity thing, I'd give it an A.

In terms of looks, this is the one of the most beautiful looking monitors I have ever seen. From the perspective of a graphics designer, the color output is excellent. And with RTA turned off, I am seeing no issues in gaming.

Haven't tested DVDs yet though.

Anyone know what RTA really does?

edit:

That shadowy crap I was refering to earlier is "Afterglow". I couldn't stand it... but then I showed it to my sis and cousin, and they weren't sensitive to it. Anyway it was on because of RTA.

edit 2:

Far Cry 2 is looking good again.

First Post. Also just scored the BenQ 24" G2400WD on sale at the egg - thanks to this forum for tipping me off to this awesome monitor. Monitor looks great in most situations. Stepped up from a Hitachi 19" CRT. Two questions though so far:

1.) What is the most common resolution used for regular text applications? Like doing e-mail and stuff? I tried the default 1920x1200 and text is waaaay too small.

2.) I played UT3 at 1920x1200 and it looked awesome, no problems. Great detail. But then I tried The Witcher and also watched a Heroes episode from Netflix (via instant watching) - in both cases the screen got very dark and harder to see. Mostly with darker scenes.

Is the best solution for this usually to turn the brightness down? I'm using "Dynamic" mode which is 100% brightness. What's a better brightness level when the darks are too dark?

My video card is the 8800GT. Thanks for any help!

@ Pugnate: From what I know RTA refers to Response Time Acceleration, some sort of Response Time Compensation(RTC)/Overdrive tech and as always it does harm than doing good, RTA mostly leads to problems due to improper application in some models, it was one of the well-known issues with 226BW monitors causing pinkish-hue and ghosting, RTA is automatically enabled after restarting your monitor.

Just turn it off, its better that way.

Welcome here Tracyrick , congrats on your purchase. Its a great monitor, and use the native (default) resolution since LCDs have a tendency to spoil picture integrity(quality) while upscaling/downscaling, but recent LCDs such as yours might be good at it. But using it at the native resolution is recommended and you'd adapt to it after awhile. I felt the same way after upgrading from a LG 17' CRT to LG 22' LCD, but you'll get accustomed to it after awhile..

You could use the extra screen real-estate for multitasking (IM, Browser, Apps, etc)

And as for the brightness issues, just play around a bit with the settings until you find the one which is nice to your eyes (cause its subjective).

And once again, Welcome to xtknight's wonderful forum!..
