My head hurts. Monitors are a total pain in the ass to shop for. I've been reading for hours and essentially all I've discovered is that I'm screwed no matter what I buy.

The problem is I can't stand matte screens. I have a dark room so I want something to maximize my colours in such an environment -- all signs point to glossy! I use a glossy screen on my laptop right now and I absolutely prefer it.

Anyway, I don't know if anyone's willing to provide suggestions, but this is basically what I want:

Under $300 USD (MAX!)
Glossy
1920x1080
22-25"
Appropriate for gaming
HDMI
Speakers/Remote are bonuses
No Acers

It doesn't seem to exist. Asus monitors seem to be very well regarded but are matte which is a deal breaker for me.

The Monitor I linked above has all those specifications. (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824001341) Even has speakers and a remote.

I was asking about it since it was much cheaper than I expected for something that looks to be what I want to get. ($230) I'm not sure why it is so cheap. It is Glossy, 23", 1920x1080, has appropriate refresh rate for games, HDMI input, Speakers, remote, and is Samsung - not Acer (SAMSUNG 2333HD High Glossy Black 23")

Interesting. The reviews around the web look positive, too bad this screen is not available in Canada.

Pretty sure that screen is matte. 'High Glossy' refers to the plastic cabinet that houses the screen.

I've settled on an HP 2159m. It doesn't cover all my needs, but I think it's as good as I'm going to get.

95% sure you're correct... which is dumb, because why a "high glossy" cabinet is a "feature" of a monitor is beyond me.

Ended up with an Acer G245H. Nice glossy panel, seems like a nice display. Little bit bummed about 5ms response time, but I doubt I'd ever notice.

My old Phillips 107P5 went out with a bang (almost) so I've spent the entire day reading about LCD's. It's been overwhelming to say the least.

Eventually I found my way to this topic and the L227WTG-PF caught my eye. Some reading later, that monitor became L227WT in Europe, which was subsequently replaced with the L227WTP-PF. Now this monitor is ~184€, which might be a bit over budget, but after a closer look I saw that there is a 20" version (L207WTP-PF) where I could shave 30€.

LG lists the two models as identical (except size) and I wonder if the smaller one is worth it. I'll try to have a look at some panels to get a better grasp of dot pitch meanwhile. My requirements would be gaming, followed by image quality (text clarity in particular for reading). Feel free to recommend other models, tough I also prefer to stay around 1680 as my GPU wouldn't handle anything over anyway.

This is the shop I'll be making my purchase from, L227WTG-PF is the ceiling at 764.99 http://www.emag.ro/monitoare_lcd/sort-priceasc
Also a currency converter if you need it http://www.convertor2.ro/

Thanks in advance.

There had been chatter this past summer that Dell would be releasing a 27-inch big brother to the U2410. I didn't really take the rumours seriously until Apple announced their 27-inch IPS iMac. At that point I flipped over to assuming a 27-inch IPS Dell UltraSharp was inevitable.

I'm a little surprised, actually, that the U2711 isn't LED-backlit, since the iMac is... but no one is making 24-inch LED-lit IPS standalone monitors either, so it shouldn't really come as a surprise.

I expect the panel will be nearly identical to the iMac's LG.Display LM270WQ1 -- though it will probably differ by one digit or letter, heh.

Has anyone confirmed the iMac's colour gamut? Yes, I'm typing on one right now, but it hasn't looked oversaturated thus far. I've read elsewhere that out of the factory the iMac seems somewhat wider than sRGB but not quite as much as Adobe. Mmm.

The Apple Cinema Display is the only consumer LED backlit 24" IP display on the market (the HP LP2480zx price tag puts it in another class). I guess it follows that only Apple seems to be interested in shipping a LED backlit 27" display.

my old dell 1907fp is starting to die and i'll probably need a new monitor sometime soon. The thing is, i know hardly naything abuot monitors, so i'll have to ask you guys for recommendations.
This is what i'm looking for:
budget of around 200
be at least 20"
gaming takes priority then movies then text, so gaming>movies>text

i've been offered a second hand dell 2005fpw for 90, should i get that? I've also been offer a SAMSUNG 2233SW for 110. Should i consider these offers or just get a new monitor altogether?

I'm afraid to say I don't know much about monitors, but I'm currently looking for a 22-23 inch under 200$. I have heard some pretty negative reviews concerning TN panels, but monitors with those panels seem to fit my budget really well. Right now my top model is:
http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-VH236H-Inch-Widescreen-Monitor/dp/tech-data/B002453K5G/ref=de_a_smtd
Any recommendations for better monitors? I'm willing to stretch my budget by 30$, but no more. My main objective is to watch HD movies and do some casual gaming.

Scouzer wanted something available in Canada. Maybe it's not available in the US? What I don't get is he was definitely against Acers, but ended up with one.

Anyway, here's info on the G245H:
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...fCjCVqHCjCdwwp

I realized I can't be picky when it comes to glossy monitors. The only brands left that make glossy panels seem to be Acer and HP. The HP monitors are extremely expensive relative to their size, so Acer was the only reasonable choice. The 24" G245H was $255 locally versus the HP 2159m 21.5" was $280 locally. That's a lot more expensive for a lot less monitor.

I don't care for Acer at all, but it's better than nothing.

And yes, I believe the Acer G245H is a very new monitor. I got the Olympics special edition one.

I am looking for a monitor between 400-500 dollars for gaming only. The monitor will not be used for anything really except gaming and schoolwork. No movies or photo-editing.

Right now I'm debating going for the Dell Ultrasharp U2410 which I now would be guaranteed good quality or for the same price I could get something bigger like the Doublesight DS-2700DW 27" http://www.amazon.com/DoubleSight-DS-2700DW-Computer-Monitor-resolution/dp/B002YGPSEG or the Hanns·G HH-281HPB Black 28" http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824254043 or the Asus 26" VK266H

So for gaming only is a monitor like the Ultrasharp u2410 worth the cost or should I just go with one of the other 3 bigger models?

Also, why is there 0 information on the DoubleSight DS-2700DW?

I just picked up the Viewsonic VX2265wm 120Hz 22" LCD My old 19" LCD Viewsonic would do 75Hz at best - which is tolerable. 120hz is waaaay nicer!. There also is a Samsung 2233RZ model that does 120Hz but harder to find and more expensive than the 250$ for the Viewsonic.

I don't think there is any advantage of 120Hz when comparing them to high quality 60Hz LCD's for gaming. 60Hz can do 60 frames per sec. The advantage comes when watching video shot at 24fps. What happens with a 60Hz LCD is you get every 3rd frame...

So I think I've found a larger monitor for gaming that I want, but I have some issues.

I'm most interested in this one, DoubleSight DS-2700DW: http://www.doublesight.com/product/?idx=31. My only problem is I can't find a single review and I'm scared the S-PVA will not have a fast enough response time for gaming. I know the Doublesight DS-265W was very popular though and it was S-PVA so can anyone who owns that one tell me if it had any response time issues with gaming? Also does anyone know why I really can't find a single review for this one? It seems strange considering the DS-265W was considered a recommended pick here.

Dang, that is a really good price for the U2410.

Dell has not been very clear about how they will handle the "new" U2410 firmware with the sRGB dithering fix. It seems that Dell will let you send in your non-updated monitor to be flashed with the new firmware, but Dell may not ship monitors with that updated firmware (at least not in the immediate future). All of this is from people asking Dell support forum people, and the answers seem to vary. I'm also not aware of anyone who's received a firmware update and confirmed that it fixes the dithering issue, though this could change any day. It's this kind of uncertainty that has turned me off of the Dell, even at such a good price.

FWIW my U2410 is fine or at least I haven't noticed anything just yet... new calibrator (LaCie Blue Eye Pro) should be here in 2 weeks and then I can give you more info.
It's a damn good monitor so far, people with no clue or first-hand experience are way overreacting - there's no model line without issues, period. It's always gamble whether you will receive a lemon or not - hence the warranty and Dell always stood by their warranty AFAIK.
