Is the NEC PA241W essentially a replacement for the LCD2490WUXi? It seems to be in the same price range and updated with DisplayPort and true 10-bit panel. Is it an sRGB or Adobe RGB monitor?

And the HP ZR24W seems to have disappeared...

Okay, it looks like the 'PA' series is indeed the replacement for the LCD'90' series. Hard|Forum has a very interesting chart, breaking down the monitor lines and their intended customers. The PA monitors will use 'p-IPS' panels, which punters speculate are the premium version of 'e-IPS' -- I suppose one could postulate that 'e' and 'p' are the next generation of H-IPS, with 'e' being somehow cheaper, though of course we won't know what it really means until we start getting our hands on p-IPS panels.

Some worry that the NEC 'PA' monitors will suffer the uniformity issues endemic to LG IPS panels these days, but as I've written before, I presume NEC's $1000+ monitors get first pick of the best panels from a production run. It's lower down the price ladder that the dodgy panels become more common.

Well, it looks as if my Samsung 305t has given up the ghost after only 15 months. Wife called me up a couple days ago to tell me the monitor was flickering like a strobe, with the intermittent and dreaded vertical stripes. Looks like I get to deal with the awful warranty service of samsung, can't wait.

The 'p' in p-IPS stands for 'Performance' according to TFT Central; IPS Panel Technologies.

sounds like a surge problem, not Samsung's fault if so.

It's a widely documented problem, apparently...they last about 12-18 months and then these problems start. And their warranty service is also reported to be atrocious. Woohoo!

If anyone cares, in the end I bought an LG W2220P-BF for around 300$. I am extremely pleased, esp with the image quality (it's not an eye killer either) and with the lack of ghosting in games. The only thing keeping this LCD from attaining perfection is a yellowish taint on the horizontal borders of about 1/3cm, very hard to notice except on very light colours and low brightness (btw what is the technical term for this issue, if any). I'll contact support Monday to check anyway.

In the end I would like to thank you guys for not answering my original query, the delay caused was just enough for this monitor to be released in my country (Romania).

Well, a couple years ago my Samsung monitor suddenly got an outbreak of dead pixels. Getting them to replace it was a snap. They shipped me a replacement with a box and info for me to ship my defective one right back to them. Didn't have to spend any downtime without a monitor. So, there, at least one completely anecdotal positive experience. Good luck.

Sometime last year, I was contemplating replacing my 215TW (even posted in here), but I gave it up and wanted to wait until tax-time this year. I'm glad I did because there sure are some great looking monitors out there. So, I have a 215TW and again, there's no problem with it, I'm just sick of the black crush in movies I watch (and i'm giving to to my brother and his wife). So, obviously, I'm going for IPS this time around. Ideally, I'd like a larger monitor if I was to buy a new one, so I was thinking of the EA231WMi. I do play games (anything from FPS to racing), and someone told me the EA231WMi would be problematic, but it looks like it is more than acceptable from that prad.de review. I'm willing to go with the 2209WA if it would be a problem after all, since I don't mind 1680x1050, but I plan on adding a bluray burner, hence my desire to go with the 16:9 format NEC.

Anyone care to straighten me out here? I'm leaning towards that NEC because I feel that if I didn't have any issues gaming on this 215TW with its input lag, would I honestly have a problem with the EA231WMi? It looks like it is excellent with video as well, from that same prad review. Of course, I wouldn't know for sure--hence the reason I'm asking .

I'm looking at new monitors, since my trusty old 19" crt seems to be on it's way out (fuzzy text). What I'm looking for is something good for gaming, with good color reproduction also, and with a resolution of 1920x1200. I was looking at the Dell ultrasharp 2410 and 2408, though it seems the 2408 has been replaced by the 2410, is that correct? I was also somewhat interested in the Samsung t260hd as well, but could not find many reviews on it other than from Cnet. Has anyone reviewed it or knows of a good site that has?

Thanks!

The one thing I don't like about this thread: More "announcements" of things to come instead of actual product reviews or products for sale.

Does anyone know when the HP ZR22W is coming out? I am either going to get that or the Dell 2209WA.

Update: They announced the HP LA22F at the same time as the ZR22W and ZR24W and the LA22F is up for sale on their website. Hopefully the ZR22W will be up next soon.

Hi XTKnight,

Thank you for all your time and help.

Just wondering... if it was ok to bring up and ask you to add that Home Theater LCD section to all the other monitors you review, for use with a PC?

I was thinking the S-IPS and Alpha IPS panels might be worth watching as they improve so that they could be used for desktop PC's in sizes from 42 to 55 inches.

I need bigger, due to my eyes and the public displays and the large format displays don't cut it, so.. do any of the LED LCD's like the new 42 inch one coming out from panasonice or the new ones from LG or Sharp, all of which either use IPS or that next generation panel from Sharp... anyway.. have response times dropped so that any of these could make a good PC monitor, as well as Home theater PC?

Thanks,

Mike

Help. I really really cannot decide! The T260 is 26 inche with HD tuner and I have a great office depot coupon/sale for it and its down the street. The VW has 2ms response time and is only 24 inches. I guess I could order the 26 inch Asus, but it has no turner. I am not that into gaming, and any gaming I have done I have done on my media center pc which is hooked up to a 50 inch plasma and has a 5850 on it. This is for a more powerful computer, an i920 with 6 gigs of ram and just a 7900 GS video card. More for web browsing, downloading, streaming to media center pc...etc. Not much gaming. Which monitor.

Overall, despite what I am looking for, can someone tell me which monitor is better? The ASUS or the Samsung in terms of picture and colors? So many different reviews. Thanks in advance.

Yea....the LCD market is based off of speculation now, without any actual data....

Where are the reviews? I got tired of sifting through TNs when all of them are great for gaming and at the rate they come out and disappear there are few reviews of them.

I'm starting to think the best way to classify LCDs is simply TN->VA->IPS and the higher you go, the better quality you get, with one exception: gamers can stay with TN if they demand higher speed, or seek out an IPS with lower frame lag. That's the whole LCD market in a sentence. It's actually quite simple. Photographers can go for wide gamut without fear: software emulation can handle their needs fine despite unbridaled fear of this "wide gamut pandemic".

Cool...NEC will come out with the IPS-based PA series, but then what? Oh, wait, are they going to be available in the US? They aren't available now, but the good news is they are IPS-based.

But, the T260's response time is pretty slow and its color setup is fairly sloppy. (Probably similar for the T260HD)

I would go for the ASUS and get a PCI tuner if you want to watch TV. That gives you flexibility to record shows, too.

I would not really bother waiting! The Dell 2209WA is a great deal as it is. Are you sure you want 1920x1080 resolution at 22"? That's pretty small text...

Is there anything good out there that will come in under $200? We actually need two, so only thing over $200 gets doubled.

MotionMan

You could get two of these: http://www.amazon.com/ViewSonic-VX24.../dp/B001O9EUSO

I usually don't like ViewSonic but what choice do you have at this price? They are probably OK. They are only 1920x1080 (true HD) resolution. As I say don't expect quality at this price. It's too cheap for what they're willing to sell quality (VA/IPS) for. They'll be good for gaming, browsing the web, and working on spreadsheets/office work.

Yea that is true. I think I am just going to buy the 2209WA because it could take forever for the HP to come out

What's a good 26"+ gaming/blu-ray monitor for PlayStation 3? It'll be mostly 98% gaming for now. After I beat Final Fantasy 13, I'll probably switch from gaming mode to full-time computer mode.

I've heard good reviews on Asus VW266H monitor but there might be a few noteworthy monitors that I may have missed out.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

So again I am debating again between the Dell 2209WA, HP ZR22W and NEC NE231WMI. Aside from price is one better than the other?
