I'm growing tired of my Acer 21.5inch monitor and am looking for something larger.

Will a Toshiba 40" LCD (40FT1U), be too much LCD at 2-3 feet? The price is $388.00 plus tax and it has good reviews as a TV. I'd be using HDMI into it at 1920x1080

Have any of you recently done hardware calibration on your monitor? I'm wondering if you could recommend tools and/or a faq that I should read about doing this. I bought a u2711 and a number of reviews say that hardware calibration provides a definite improvement in the display, but the reviews themselves don't really teach you how to do it, or what you should look for in order to do it.

There's various things out there on the web. There's actual hardware calibration stuff you can get that hooks onto your screen and looks at it and shit.

I can't remember the site, flatpanelshd.com or something that usually lists the calibration they used to get the calibrated numbers.

Hello everyone,

It's been awhile since I last posted but it's time for a new monitor. Just to give you some background I'm fairly sensitive to motion blur/input lag to the point that many FPS games will make me nauseous.

So based on my budget I have narrowed it down to two monitors, the Dell U2311H and the LG W2363D. Mostly games and movies.

Thank you!

I used to use the old forums but I see now that it is no longer around.

I have a Samsung SyncMaster 215tw who has went through a fire, and subsequent flood from the elements and fire hoses for 3 months, 4.5 years ago and many many hours of usage. Just within this last week a pixel finally failed on me so I am wondering what is out there these days?

Is there anything better than this monitor using maybe LED instead of CCFL that does <=8ms and has true 8bit colour (no TN panels)?

WOW, this thread really is dead.

Hmph, no place to get valid, and reliable, information anymore and the flippant answer of just going to the store/shop to check them out is not an answer since they normally have mass consumer products not every product available.

Well in reality it comes down to almost any off the shelf monitor in the cheaper price ranges are about equal.

The uber ones really take someone sitting down and viewing them, preferably calibrated.

A monitor is not an item to really shop just on specs.

When I purchased mine it was all based on specs and people in the forum because not a shop/store here had it on display.

I loved this monitor but, at the time, it was 600 dollars US too.

Now that the forum is dead I am being forced to just go buy a TN panel and call it day (squeal like a pig as I grab my ankles too).

Kiximnmili,

Thanks for offering your mother, sisters and daughters for free sex with american men. Unfortunately we need to see some pics prior to committing our hard earned $20 bill to seal the deal.

Two dead pixels now (on opposite sides).

Is this supposed to happen where one pixel dies and they start to fall like a house of cards?

Any word when the next Dell U241X will be out? That's basically when I am buying my next monitor. It's the only good 1920x1200 monitor out there for a price that is below $500. (With a good stand anyway)

Anything wrong with that Asus I posted above. It's under $500.

The ZR24w is under $500 as a pretty good 24" 1900x1200 IPS monitor. (http://www.officedepot.com/a/product...:referralID=NA)

It is 413.95 at Office Depot (about $100 cheaper than Newegg)

The dells usually get really good reviews.

What's a decent cheap LCD then that is 24" and 1920x1200? It needs to rotate and stuff. (Portrait mode)

Why does there seem to be such a lack of good information on the internet about monitor advice for gamers.

The response times on monitors seems to be useless to look at. Everyone says TN panels suck, but then again, anything that isn't TN apparently has ghosting to some extent.

I'm so confused.

After a bunch of researching for a 26-27 inch gaming monitor, I'm about ready to just give up. Even real expensive monitors like the dell u2711 apparently do have ghosting for guys who do a lot of gaming (like me).

For instance, why not just go with something like this:

http://www.gamingreviewguide.com/vx2739wm-viewsonics-new-1ms-27-inch-pc-gaming-monitor/

Again, going to be 'hardcore' (I feel like a loser saying that lol) gaming, not for any photo editing, watching movies, or writing essays. Just gaming all the way. I want something large, no ghosting, and as cheap as possible given the first two.

The root of the problem is manufactures and panel resellers not being forthright about their product offerings. They feel the cost to build a high quality color correct monitor that is also fast would not sell well ... are you going to pay $1,000 + for a gaming monitor? I don't think so either ... so it is all smoke and mirrors in marketing for what makes a great monitor based on a lot of useless specs. I don't game much so I'm not hurting for anything.

Do yourself a favor and get a NEC 2490wuxi2 … beautiful colors … and just live with the slower response time ... because in 2011 you can't have it all. Here hoping we get something in the next five years.

sadly most that think they'd have an issue with ghosting will not and most cannot afford better anyway.

Having a debate about the 120hz vs. 60hz issue here:

http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2156837

I do know I have an issue with ghosting at least to an extreme, after playing on a L227WTG (which is known to have very little ghosting) and then going to an HDTV Sony Bravia KDL 40" and trying to play first person shooters, I couldn't keep track of the enemy in close firefights because my muzzle flash would stay on my screen as I tried to turn and track my enemy, blocking my view.

To a lesser extent back on my L227WTG, I still feel that very hectic close quarters fights still leave the enemy blurry and hard to pin down.
