Retirement....

After a pretty good run in RC5, a great run in D2OL (don't think I was ever #1 in the world, but the TeAm was!), and a lot of fun in FaD, and then finally Rosetta (my final milestone: 1/2 million points, broke into the top 100 in the world, and cracked the TeAm top 10), it's come time to hang up my CPUs and call it quits. I've found that other interests are pulling me away from the time required to keep my modest herd running, that the expense can no longer be justified nor overlooked, and I just don't have the passion for DC that I used to have. As such, probably over the long weekend, my production will plummet as I turn off machines. There will be a few PCs kept around the house, but they will no longer run 24/7.

Sadly, the TA-STATS box will also be coming down. As much as I'd like to keep it up and running, there simply isn't enough activity on the server to justify keeping it up (less than 10 hits/day). I'd be happy to share the code I have with any TeAm mate that wants to keep the stats running... just PM me if you are interested and we can work something out.

Shortly, you'll see some stuff in a FS thread. In keeping with tradition, you guys will have first crack at it in an effort to keep what resources I have crunching for the TeAm.

There is one administrative matter that need to be attended to also. With respect to the D2OL team, it doesn't make much sense to have someone with no vested interest in the project designated as the team owner. If there is a current member of the TeAm that wishes to assume this responsibility, or if a vote is more appropriate, LMK and I'll pass the torch on to the next leader.

I've made some great friends and look forward to carrying on this friendships. You guys are a marvelous and unique group of people, and I'm proud to have been associated with all of you over the last several years.

Crunch on TeAm!

I'm in the same boat, my last electric bill was just short of $200. I've managed to sell about 4 machines but still have about a dozen running in the basement. It's just gotten way out of hand.

I'm sure we all have gone through the same thought process and value judgment at one time or other. It is always a hard decision. I've gotten involved in many different commitments over the course of my life. Cutting strings and moving on is always a heart wrenching thing to do. I have found one rule of thumb that helps me decide what to do, "Does the GAIN outweigh the PAIN"?

When you cannot answer in the affirmative, it is time to move on.

GeoffS, you are one of the most dedicated TeAm members I have come to know. I just want you to know that you will always be "First Class" in my book.

"Once a TeAm Mate .... Always a TeAm Mate."

Stay in touch.

So, for your final DC act, you knocked me out of the Rosetta TeAm top 10, and beat me to 500k?

Seriously, we all appreciate your contribution to the Projects and the TeAm...and we know how priorities change. I'm way off my highpoint, but I'll keep crunching somewhat.

Good luck to you, Geoff! Don't be a stranger.

Geoff, I well understand your reasons for DC retirement. I too could no longer dismiss the costs involved in maintaining my DC lifestyle as it were. As others have said, don't let DC inactivity be a reason not to stop by occasionally and visit your friends in the forums.

That's sad news but you gotta do what you gotta do Geoff. I hope it doesn't mean you'll be "retirering" from the forums though.

I second that. I am sad to see you leave and hope you will check in now and then - or more often ...

Good luck to you Geoffs!

It was fun crunching SETI with you back a few years ago in some of those mini races we often had!

I too don't run nearly as many machines at home as I once did. I couldn't justify the $$$ each month on the electric bill that went to DC.

In addition, I have become more of a lurker on the boards. I've never been a major forum contributor but it is nice to stop in and read the threads and see most of the "regulars" are still here. There is no better place that the DC forum...

Good luck to you Geoff!
