Wow on the Pikmin 3... why in the world did they stop making disks anyway? That game has only been out a year and a half at most.

They probably won't release a "Player's Choice Million Seller" series when they can just sell digital downloads.

Speaking of which, I just picked up a Killer Instinct Gold for N64. Unfortunately I can't get it to play for some reason. I havn't personally cleaned it as it looked pretty clean. Testing out my N64 a bit to see if it is just this game (havn't really played my N64 in forever).

I loaned my copy out in the '90s and it came back non-functional. They said they spilled Pepsi inside. It never worked again. Maybe you found my old copy.

lol... After doing a little fiddling with it, I managed to get it to load the title screen and made it into a match. However, every 20-30 seconds the screen blanks out (music continues and game continues) and 3-5 seconds later the screen comes back (at which time you are most likely 1/2 dead). Not sure what would cause that, since I know the console itself is fine (played a couple hours of Zelda:OoT and StarFox 64 with no problems).

I guess I need to really take apart the cart and see what is going on in there.

On a side note, I finally gave in and ordered an Everdrive v8 (NES). It should be here any day now.

Also on the N64, I need to fix one of the analog sticks on one of my controllers (it makes sense that it is the one that has problems as it is the controller I used the most back in the day). I ordered some Molykote 44 light silicone grease (which should be here next week). I need to pickup a 2 part epoxy still so I can fill in some of the plastic that wore away, and then lube everything up before putting back together.

Funny thing is I am missing at least 2 controllers somewhere. There is another box I havn't looked in, but I didn't think I had it in there (as it has my Intellivision, and Texas Instruments TI-98a with their games and boxes, but I might have put the controllers in there as well if there was space).

There is a company that produces new "knockoffs" of the N64 controllers. They are nearly identical except they wipe out the "Nintendo" in that little oval. The oval is there but no letters.

You can get them for about $10 on ebay.

I think Killer Instinct freezes if you have a Rumble Pak inserted.

The funny thing is, Blast Corps does this...and it was originally supposed to have Rumble Pak support. I had a very early unauthorized N64 guide from 1996 that had a section for upcoming games. It showed an early version of Blast Corps and said it would include the "Force Pak."

Other early articles back then called it the "Jolt Pak." I guess it went through some iterations before Nintendo settled on the name "Rumble Pak." Later, some unauthorized third-party accessories used the names "Jolt Pak" and "Force Pak."

I have a bunch of brand new, sealed official Nintendo-brand controllers...including a limited edition gold one. Probably never going to open them

I tried one of those reproductions that look very much like an original. Concluded very quickly that it was trash and never touched it again. I don't know what I'm going to do when all my thumbsticks wear out

Bought one from a local retailer out of curiosity. It was junk.

Yeah, that is why I have avoided those knockoffs. They look good, but are pretty crappy when you go to use them (same with most gamepads/controllers). I would rather pay $50 for an original than $10 for a knockoff.

There are some pretty good guides out there for repairing the N64 controller (no, I am not talking about the scotch-tape guides. I mean the real ones that involve rebuilding the plastic by drilling a hole, cleaning out dust/plastic particles, potentially using a file to recreate the nub at the end of the stick, and rebuilding the plastic area with epoxy so that it has the height needed for the spring to gain tension again in the stick).

Really? I bought one too and didn't have any issues. I don't play all that often though.

I'll have to check it out again to iterate my criticisms, but they were numerous.

I was able to compare it directly to official controllers that were in excellent condition. I've always been untrusting of third-party controllers. My friend had one of the earliest ones. I think it was the SharkPad or MakoPad from Interact...? Plug in the Rumble Pak when Starfox 64 came out and your Arwing is stuck flying sideways as if you were holding the R shoulder button.

Then I got a Nuby controller called "The Rock." I was excited because the stick looked like Nintendo's own. I ended-up returning it because it would oversteer slightly in all directions. In Blast Corps, your little guy would moonwalk everywhere (the walker robots would do it too). In Mario Kart 64, you'd randomly spin-out waaay more often during a race.

Just from those observations, I always wondered if other controllers are putting me at a disadvantage by under-steering...especially the ones that used potentiometers instead of an optical system.

On one controller, yes, but no batteries in it (do not know if that makes a difference or not). I will need to try again when I get home.

Somehow I doubt that the cart is to blame for video blanking. I have one N64 power supply that causes strange behavior including random blank screen in the middle of a game. It may not be the exact same issue, but it's something to look into. Sounds like a bad cap in the video circuitry.

KI checks all controllers at boot for controller-specific custom configurations (actually, Controller Pak-specific). Because it is unaware of the Rumble Pal's existence (Rumble Pak was released later), it doesn't know what to make of it and hangs on a blank screen.

Yeah, but it actually brings up the menu and lets me select a character/fighter, starts the fight and in the middle of the fight will blank the screen for a couple seconds and then come back. I don't think that is the issue with the controller check during boot.

And if it was a power supply issue, or cap issue in the console, I would suspect to have the issue occur on all games, not just KI:Gold. As stated previously I played Zelda:OoT for 4 hours straight over the weekend without seeing this issue, and played a couple hours of StarFox 64, again, with no issue. But the moment I put in KI:Gold, about 30-45 seconds into it, the screen will blank for a few seconds and come back, and then repeat in another minute, and continue doing so until turning off the system and changing the game...

I would expect a problem with the cart to simply crash the game completely. That game probably uses the CPU/GPU in a different way, which causes the problem to manifest. For one thing: The backgrounds render at 60fps (according to Nintendo Power magazine).

Unfortunately I didn't get a chance last night to look the issue. I do have a second N64, so I might try it on the second console to see if it might be related to the console itself. I don't remember if KI:Gold needs the expansion RAM/memory or not to run (as it is a pain to pull it out without the tool, which I lost a long time ago).

On another note, I should be getting a few goodies today. I ordered 2 custom NES carts a few weeks ago flashed with some of the fan/homebrew games. Specifically I ordered SMB3Mix and a 4-in-1 cart with 4 of the Zelda roms (these are why I finally broke down and ordered an Everdrive so I can just load up my own cart, but from what I have seen of the gameplay on SMB3Mix I most definitely would have wanted it as its own cart as it deserves it as a game).

KIG is from 1996. Definitely doesn't use the expansion RAM. Congrats on the custom carts. I'd make my own though.

Given that I am breaking out the NES again, anyone hear more about when the "Blinking Light Win" will be in production and available?
