I can't believe I had never played Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island until today. It is a REALLY good game. I still can't get over how I missed this gem back in the day.

It's a fantastic platformer with really hard special levels. Probably my favorite use of the SuperFX chip.

One of the best platformers ever. Satisfying end. The challenge stages in each world are awesome. GBA version adds more. Boss fights are amazing!

Tetris Attack (1996) is themed with Yoshi's Island stuff. It's my favorite game of all time.

Did any of you guys play exclusively on a Turbografx or CDi or 3D0?

Was it satisfying? Did you feel like you were missing out?

Now I have all 3 of those. I only knew one guy back in the day with a Turbografx-16, but it wasn't his only system. He had more systems than anyone else I knew in the early '90s (NES, SNES, Genesis, Game Gear, TG16, PC). The only time I got to play his TG16, I fell in love with Devil's Crush pinball.

I didn't know anyone with CD-I or 3D0. I got to try them at retail demos, but they just didn't seem to be fun at all.

I finally got an NES Classic. Looking forward to the fact apparently the same company is making the emulators for the Switch VC.

Sound isn't quite right, but that's minor.

There's some kind of anti-epillepsy filter that adds even more latency than you already get from your TV processing and resizing 720p. The latency can be absolutely awful, even when the TV is in game mode. It's a major flaw with the NES Classic Edition.

[edit]

So it's practically impossible to beat Mr. Dream in "Punch-Out!!" on the NES Classic Edition by using skill / reaction time. I think some people have finished the game on NES Classic, but it has to be done by anticipating his moves (rather than reacting to them).

I prefer using my retro hardware for games (even if res is terrible on larger screen), although the convenience of EMU/ROM's is nice sometime.
I remember a decade ago bringing my NES over to my friend's parant's house while he was house sitting and rocking some LOZ and SMB on their 50+ non-WS/HD screen.

For most of my old consoles, I have RGB modded them (when possible) and play them through a XRGB-Mini Framemeister. I'm looking into getting a N64 modded with the new HDMI mod (I have both my original unmodded N64 and one modded with Voultar's THS7374 RGB amplifier board with c-sync).

Need an installer? My brother (CZroe) installed UltraHDMI in our childhood N64 and it went perfectly. We have a bunch more N64s and at least one more UltraHDMI kit.

You know that doesn't really bug me that much because frankly the TV I use for retrogaming has medium bad lag plus now that I am older I can't do twitch gaming as well as I could do when I was a kid.

What is bugging me more about this thing is the controller. It looks like a NES controller but the directional pad feels.....wrong in some way. I much prefer my real NES controllers hooked up via USB to my HTPC. This NES classic is a cool collector's item, but I think I prefer the experience I can create myself.

Really what gets me the most is it has some roms on there I wish I would have dumped back in college when I was doing ROM dumps. My priority then was to do the games I had from childhood plus some imports I bought just to dump so I could patch in a translation. If I could go back in time I would have bought some of these other NES classics off of Ebay and ripped them too. Mega Man 2 is the big one. Maybe I can rip the rom off of the NES Classic- I bought the game with it right? Bah emulation is a frustrating grey area.

Also this NES Classic kinda shows me that even though NES games on a flatscreen are cool, the nostalgia is wrapped around old big CRTs. Some of the roms I have I have since lost the cartridges to thanks to a flood, so I am thinking of getting one of those super cart things where you can load ROMs on a sd card and play them on a real NES. Any suggestions? Also do you know a place to get decent real NES controllers? This experience makes me feel like I need to stockpile some.

The D-pad is a bit off. It needs a bigger bump underneath to roll around on.

You can actually swap boards and most of the parts with a real controller. Only a little bit of nudging required.

Did anyone exclusively play on one of those systems? Literally the only time I encountered a TG16 was when I rented one from Hastings because I was curious.
I remember seeing the other two in stores, but they didn't look or feel right for game consoles.

I have an Everdrive N8 for NES, a SD2SNES for SNES, and an Everdrive-64 v3 w/CIC for N64. Some people prefer the Powerpak for NES, but I have not had any issues with the newer firmwares for the N8. If you want expanded audio, I don't know if the Everdrive N8 will support it on a standard NES without modifications (it does work on a HiDef modded NES). You may want to get the Everdrive N8 Famicom which is a Famicom cart, but then you need to have a converter to connect it to a regular NES... Again, I simply have used my Analogue NT to play with expanded audio from my Everdrive N8.

As for a place to get decent real NES controllers, not really sure anymore. Most everything now is all refurb or reproductions. I personally still have 4 original controllers from when I grew up (2 from my original NES, and 2 from a replacement NES I bought from a friend when my original died). I also have a couple of the third party controllers (crap IR wireless ones, a Max (used exclusively for Life Force), and an Advantage). No idea who carries good OEM originals anymore or new-in-box old stock.

This was probably discussed, but what sort of TV is everybody using for their retro gaming? I have a bunch of Trinitron CRTs at home (a 20", three 24" - I bought these in preparation for a MAME cabinet I'm planning, and two 27"), with my main being the KV-27FV300 (got it for free). I've been keeping an eye open for a 20" PVM but I haven't had any luck. The KV-27FV300 is great. It had some geometry issues which I've mostly fixed in the service menu, and the convergence is out of whack in the upper left corner, but the picture quality and sound are excellent.

The thing I don't like about the silver flat Trinitrons is they typically have poor geometry, especially on the lower half where the image tends to bow in the middle. On platformers and side-scrollers, this is noticeable as a "wavy" picture. My KV-27FV300 has it, but I want to try to fix it. I've read a little about yoke adjustment, but I think I want to try placing those small magnets near the yoke to try to deflect the beam in the trouble areas. I have no plans to use my other 27", so I removed some of the magnets from that one which I should be able to use on the FV300.

I've been thinking about picking up one of the older round tube TVs, preferably a Sony, as they typically have better geometry. The only downside is that component inputs are rare on those, and from what I've read, hacking RGB into the OSD menu seems to yield variable results.

I've kept an old crap Zenith 20" TV that I used in college (yes, flat screens were still not out yet when I started college in 1997-1998). I've been meaning to pick up a good PVM before you can't get them anymore, but just have not gotten around to it (its on my list to get after I buy a house and have some more room to put stuff).

I just ordered a RaspberryPi so I can play some old school goodness. Obviously not as good as having the system but with an HDTV its the next best option.

Yes, it isn't a bad option. I mean, most of us that are playing on an HDTV have several hundred dollars worth of equipment and mods for each console. It is a little pricey when you think about it (I mean, seriously, a HiDef NES will set you back $400, a RGB modded SNES will run close to $130 and you need something like a XRGB-mini Frameister (which goes for around $400) and probably another $20-30 in cables to connect properly... I mean, it adds up. I probably have several thousands in games.

Sony WEGA 32" CRT for $10 at a thrift store is the place to be for classic gaming.

I have a 27" WEGA that I paid like $500 for brand new back in... 2001?
It's heavy enough, don't think I'd be wild about moving a 32"

I had one growing up. It was a cool system back when I first got it, never had many games for it but Splatterhouse and Bonk 2 were awesome. However when I got the SNES in 92 the TG16 became a dust collector. I think the TG16 is a good console and has a decent library but looking back I kind of wish I would have went the Sega Genesis route.

The TG16 has a ton of shooters, and a lot of them are really good.

I'm not sure what came out in the west though, might be more accurate to say PC Engine.

I recently pulled out my SNES and N64 to play some Mario Kart 64, F-zero X and some Super Mario World. Wound up also hitting some UN Squadron, some TMNT IV, Battletoads in Battlemaniacs and oh man the list goes on. Was using AV and wanted to get the component cables from HD Retrovision but couldn't quite pull the trigger on $55+ some odd. Wound up buying a S-Video cable for like $7.50 on amazon. Probably not QUITE as good as component, but it cleaned up the signal of both the 64 and the SNES on the LCD TV i use it on QUITE a bit.

Just throwing this out there as an alternative to the really pricey mods, if you have a TV with S-Video (mine is an LG LCD TV, 32" from 2008 so it had one) it might be a good budget way to get a pretty clean picture from at least your SNES, N64, and/or GameCube. All three support S-Video right out of the box, it just wasn't really common, so it wasn't used in the early to mid 90's and they didn't come with a cable in the box.

The GameCube's 1st party component cables are through the roof expensive, and like Fallen Kell said above, HDMI mods on the NES and others are very pricey. If you have a Wii, the Component cables are pretty cheap for that as well, sub $10 on Amazon, and can get you pretty clean picture on Wii and GameCube games as well. I have a Wii and it looks very good with one of those cables on a 47" 1080p HD TV. Mario Kart Double Dash looks amazing.

Just chiming in on a couple good budget ways to get cleaner signal out of retro systems, IF you have the S-Video port.

I've been saying that about S-video for a long time. Just be aware there are many junk ones that mix chroma and luma signals (composite on both pins) and they are garbage. It's hard to know what you're getting.

Also be aware that the mini SNES (SNS-101) doesn't support S-video without a modification. That's the SNES with no power light and no eject mechanism.

I have the official GC component cable. It's the second one I ordered direct from store.nintendo.com back in the day. My first was stolen along with my entire GameCube collection in the middle of the GameCube's life span as the current Nintendo system.

I managed to get a good one, Gam3Gear is the brand, had good reviews and looks quite good in actual use. Typically if you can get one that has ONLY S-Video and the two audio cables, you are good. DO NOT get the ones that have the composite wire as well, those seem to be the ones where they shortcut the wiring.

But, oof, stolen, that sucks. I actually didn't have it stolen, but I gave it to my parents. I bought a Wii like 8 or 9 years ago or something, it was a couple years old at the time so I think I got one of the first waves of used ones. Since it played GameCube games I decided I didn't need the system itself anymore, my dad liked the Mario Golf game so I gave the system to him. Somewhere along the way I decided I needed money or something and sold my collection a couple of years later. I think I had Mario Kart Double Dash, Metroid Prime, Super Monkey Ball, Mario Golf (after my dad returned it to me, he said he didn't use it as much as we thought he would) and F-Zero GX. All games I would kill to have back right now (I did find a decent deal on MKDD for $25, so I have gotten that back, and like I said before, it looks fantastic on the Wii with the component cable). I really regret getting rid of that collection, F-Zero GX is such a good, and REALLY challenging game.

Fortunately my parents still have the GameCube, and my brother's GameCube (with a copy of Super Monkey Ball still in it!), they are going to send me both. On top of that they still have my old NES top loader, so I'm getting that back as well. I feel fortunate to have access to them again. Just wish I never deepsixed those games. Huge mistake.

What games did you lose when they were stolen? How big was your collection?

I primarily focused on first/second party games. I had nearly all of them that had been released at the time.

Trying to go from memory...
Luigi's Mansion
Waverace: Blue Storm
1080° Avalanche
Eternal Darkness
Mario Sunshine
Mario Kart Double Dash (special double-disc case with a retailer exclusive demo disc)
F-Zero GX
Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader
Rogue Squadron III (retailer exclusive release with an extra bonus demo disc)
Probably some of the Capcom REmake games.
Mario Party 4 (maybe others)
Zelda Master Quest bonus disc
Zelda Wind Waker
Zelda Collector's Edition
Animal Crossing
Maybe Kirby's Air Ride? I don't remember if that was released at the time.
maybe Mario Strikers
maybe Geist
Smash Bros. Melee
Mario Golf Toadstool Tour
Maybe Zelda Four Swords Adventures

Metroid Prime
maybe Metroid Prime 2?
at least one of those would have been a retailer exclusive version with a bonus demo disc.

Probably others I don't remember. Yeah. It stung quite a bit.

Oh yeah. Phantasy Star Online and the Broadband adapter for early GC hacking

I think I had Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles too.
