I while ago a thread about the need to acquisition a quality belt was defiled with necromancy and locked, however I happened upon it in time to learn of hand crafted Amish leather belts for sale at a place called hanks back east. I have ordered one of these Amish belts. Almost got some nice ballistic sun glasses as well, but I digress. When the belt gets here I will display it's awesome American craftsmanship, purchased at the price of less than an eighth of an ounce of marijuana.

A poignant side topic could be the state of american made goods, and the question of why the Amish can sell me a hand crafted leather belt of such a superior nature through a middle man and yet things cannot evidently be produced by other Americans at comparable price-points for level of quality achieved.

The fact that modern American culture with the added benefit of electricity and modern society in general, cannot compete on par with the Amish in regards to mens handcrafted leather accessories did not spark debate? Seriously?

I am disappoint.

I fear the wrath of the Amish mafia, so I dare not speak ill of their leatherwares.

And, if you want a true quality belt, hit the gym then join the WWE. No belt can compare to the World Heavyweight Championship belt.

Amish: Guy with a great work ethic and little desire for wealth crafts something and sells it for cheap.

modern America: Guy with a desire for profit above all else builds a brand, ends up with a massive corporation full of worthless managers making $200k, outsources manufacturing to China to shave a few pennies on the per-unit cost while keeping the retail price high.

As a consumer you want to buy from the Amish, but as a stockholder, you're not going to get rich investing in AMSH.

sadly...the Amish culture has changed quite a bit. I am 2 generations removed the from the church. For reference: my grandmother's maiden name was Yoder. A lot of the Amish now are living by the letter of the law instead of the spirit. The rules say they can't have electricity in the house, so they have it in the barn. They can't own a car but they can pay for one and have someone else drive them in it. There are a whole bunch of little things like that that make what most people envision when they picture Amish out of date.

There are for sure plenty of Amish still working hard and not enjoying modern things. But chances are the guys making your belts and stoves are not them.

Around my neck-o-the-woods (Lancaster County, PA), there are quite a few good harness shops that sell superior quality Amish belts. I need a good stiff belt for concealed/open carry. These fit the bill nicely.

Most people would rather have a cheap belt than a good one.

I learned the hard way to not do what most people do.

Over the years I've figured out which items are best to have quality and which are best to have cheap. As I get older I find that things like belts, shoes, gloves, hats, and even jackets are best high quality and well cared-for. Overall you save money compared to replacing cheap junk frequently.
Jeans I think I am preferring high quality as well. Sheets, pillows (I got a gel pillow that pulls away heat), underpants.
Yes, underpants. Quality comfortable sack protection really makes a difference on a miserable, hot day.
Pocket tools, multitools especially. Hand tools, power tools, little junk that makes life easier, like driver bits. Even your typical kitchen drawer scissors.
Other kitchen stuff too. The Oxo Good Grips stuff is easier to handle and built better than garbage from Walmart.
Garden junk like hoses and nozzles.

Yeah, theres a lot of things in the house that are better when quality. Just keep an eye on them, dont let them get swiped. Dont abuse or neglect them, dont break them. In the end it makes life a little easier.

Some shit I can have cheap and it doesnt matter. Most soaps and laundry stuff. Razors. Most food items. If I want a quality steak I'll go to a restaurant that I know does a good job, but in the house its plain ground beef for manwhiches.
Most drugs and first aid items, but I've found having a decent first aid kit in the car (lots of junk, sturdy bag) is a good idea.

Thats another one, car shit.
I got a good Duracell jump starter with built in light and USB ports. It wasnt cheap but its already paid for itself twice over. At least one heavy duty, waterproof flashlight that you can trust your life to.

But other junk I get cheap. Would rather use inexpensive wiper blades and replace them twice a year (which you should really do anyway). Same with oil. Cardboard Fram filter, basic oil, replace at 5000 like the manual says. Never had a problem.

I've been looking to seriously step up my belt game. These cheap pieces of crap from kohls keep falling apart. I swear the inside of this belt looks like some type of cardboard/paper where the faux leather face has been worn away.

Never again. Are these hanks belts the real deal?

Found this. They sell what looks like a ratcheting belt buckle that allows quarter inch increments instead of the typical 1 inch found on normal belts. Leather quality looks decent in the pictures.
http://ansonbelt.com/

I'm probably going to give it a shot. I can't find any reviews other than on their website, but it actually seems like a really great idea. $99 bucks for 6 belt combinations if you get the gift box. Looks like they have a lifetime guarantee as well. Now to convince the wife that I need to spend $100 bucks on belts...

Dickies, good quality, sweat shop labor in the USA, still reasonable prices.

I broke a dickies belt I bought at Walmart after wearing it one day. The buckle is held on by a single tiny pin, sheared right off.

I prefer gun belts. They're high quality, sturdy and last forever. Most of the big holster companies make them. DeSantis, Milt Sparks, Galco, etc.

I picked up a Galco leather gun belt a couple years ago. I wear it every day and it shows no sign of wear. It wasn't much more than a cheap belt and it's rock solid. Just by looking at it you would not know it's a gun belt.

I'm very happy.
