Look at this thing. I came back to my parent's house for the fall break. It just happens to be my birthday today and as a reward for pulling off a 3.8 college GPA, they gifted me a thousand dollars Iphone $%^*ing X.

I am utterly speechless because i was actually looking to purchase a One Plus 5T during the black Friday to replace my current cheap $50 phone whose wifi no longer works. 5T will have a student discount and sell for $450.

I like android because the ability to root the phones and do all kinds of things with it.(I am a computer engineering major and I actually develop android apps as a hobby)

ios 11 can't be jailbroken and apple products are always something i roll my eyes at due to their high prices.

I am thinking about returning the iphone x to the store for a refund and sticking to my original plan of purchasing one plus 5T. That will leave me with $550 dollars leftover.

But i am hesitating because i am not very confident if i should. how has ios been since 2013? (which was the last time i ever used an ios). can the ios nowadays install file browser, console emulators and download apps from 3rd party sources? if ios gets better nowadays, i won't mind using it.

oh, is this thing worth the $1000 price tag?

You'll get over the incessant need to mess with your phone when you realize that you just want a phone that works from the start. Phones are far more integral to our life at this point that it can be a bit awkward if yours is out of commission due to a random firmware flashing or whatever.

And the X is only about $200 more than the iPhone 8 Plus. If you want something that doesn't seem so expensive, you could always just get an 8 Plus instead.

I spent a few hours playing with the thing today and I am very disappointed with ios 11. i dont see where the phone works from the start come from. i can't download videos by pressing on a video and tap save as i would on android chrome. i cant install Firefox extensions like ublock origin on ios version of Firefox. That is a must have for browser heavy user like me. I can't download any torrent from the web either. on android, i can simply download utorrent from playstore, click on a magnet link and add it to my phone for download.

There doesnt see to be a file manager or emulators on the appstore. I can't download 3rd party apps from other places besides app stores either. I had been a fan of amazon market place btw.

the phone deosnt seem to be capable of doing as much as android.

am i just inexperienced with the operating system or is this all it is to ios?

The best way to think about it is (though this is getting less and less true all the time): iOS doens't do as much as android but what it does do, it tends to do better. If you are happy with what your phone can do, you'll be happy with an iphone. If you want to do something that Apple says no to, there isn't really a good way round that.

On the other hand, its a gift and it would be rude to return it for money.

Ok, I am definitely gonna be returning the phone. The file manager on iOS is just a mess. I don’t see why apple cant just give us a simple file browser and let apps access to internal storage.

I have 25gb worth of data on my sd Card. Since iPhone X takes no as card, I had to transfer all the files. This does not fit on the 5gb iCloud and I have no patience to wait for uploading and downloading either.

i had to transfer files directly. I just copy and paste into some folder in the iphones internal storage like on android right? Bloody no. I had to download iTunes and get another third party apps from AppStore like documents to transfer file. How is this possible if my computer runs on Linux and does not support iTunes? I had to go to a friends house and borrow his windows pc. This is BS.

I got all 25 gb in a folder on my document app now so good. Next, I wish to download a 2 gb movies from the internet using chrome and add that to my library. And guess what? Unlike android, iOS chrome would give download fail every time if I lock the screen and minimize the app. I had to use another third party downloader from the App Store. No big deal as long as it works. BUT because apps can not access a common internal storage, I had to bloody transfer the file from the downloader to document. This means duplicating files and it is bloody time consuming for large files like 2gb movie. After downloader transfered to documents, I had to delete it on downloader to save space. Why do I have to do this extra step? Why??? On android I can just simply open a file on my internal storage from any app. This is utter nonsense. Why do I have to transfer file from app to app if they are all opening the same bloody file?

Lastly, Mobile tethering is impossible. I found out my carrier charges $10 per month for tethering. I never knew this because somehow tethering always work on android phones. I only found out about this policy after I switched to iOS. How come android was able to bypass carrier restriction and iOS can’t for some reason? I did not even bloody root my previous android phone to have this functionality and carrier charging extra for mobile hotspot when I already have a data plan is BS.

Android always have the perks of downloading and installing apps from unknown sources. When I saw iOS can do the same using certificates and similar loopholes, it convinced me to give iOS a try. And bloody hell, those apps have so much bugs, glitches, crashes, and are nothing more than just cheap hacked, modded, or pirated versions from the AppStore and generally low quality. Many haven’t seen an update since version 1.0. Kodi for instance isn’t found in appstore(even though it is on android playstore)and I had to install it from TutuApp and it doesn’t bloody work because the app hasn’t been updated since Jarvis.

The final straw is the freaking screen, rather than using all the bezeless screen, many apps have this stupid black border on iPhone X, reducing the screen size to more or less that of 4.7 inch iPhone 7. This makes video consumption and gaming a complete disapleasure. For a 1 thousand dollars phone, I seriously expect the software experiences to be perfect.

I know I am just ranting here but I am a bit pissed after 4 hours trying to transfer and manage my bloody files and trying to bypass the tethering restriction.

Yeah, I know it is a gift which is why I decided to return it to my parent instead of refund it for $$$. They need a phone more than I do. I don’t have an usable android phone at the moment though so I will put up with the iPhone X until my one plus 5t arrives.

"AmdisTheBEST" Things you are describing are just pointless complaints. Download a 2gb movie? Are you from the 80s? Using Utorrent, stop doing illegal stuff on your phone. Hopefully cops get you very soon and bust your ass. File manager? what on earth do you need that for, it's pointless. Third party appstore, why you need that? Appstore have everything.

Anyway if you gonna return it, get huawei p9 it cost about 300$ now it's the phone I got. And it's probably still among the fastest smartphones on the market.

How am I suppose to transfer all my files and open them without a file manager? How do you iPhone users store your data anyhow? Do you really just like upload gigabytes worth of data all to iCloud?

Torrent is part of the internet and don’t lie to me that you’ve never used one.

Nah, I am getting the one plus 5t.
It will have lastest upgrade to android Oreos. I need a phone with the latest android api for development too. I am not gonna be flashing firmware and building custom roms but I will be making apps compatible with the latest android features.
