I can't tell which I hate worse, the outside or the inside. I'll tell you what though, once those diesel's start comming out that Prius will be in big trouble.
Seriously, i hope Mazda brings the 40+ mpg Mazda 3 diesel here.
With diesel being a dollar more a gallon there just isn't as much value in it as there was 3 years ago when it was actually cheaper a gallon than gas.
Does anyone know why this changed? It's .75 to $1 more than premium now! There is no way I would consider a diesel at the current prices.
I would get one of these though. The center console isn't as bad as you might think. You guys are just afraid of change.
Why wouldn't you consider one at current prices? Do you look at the long term saving or just short term? Seeing as a Pruis is more expensive than other similarly equipped cars by thousands more, is that ok then?
The first reason is that there are so few choices in the US. The only car in the price range of the Prius is the Jetta TDI. I think the next car price wise, would be the Bluetec E class, and that's a bit too rich for me.
A 2009 Prius decked out the way I would want is $27,500 sticker, vs $24,800 for the TDI. I'll put aside the fact that you could buy me a VW, and I wouldn't keep it, just to see how this turns out.
The mpg on the Prius is 48/45 vs 30/40 for the TDI. I paid $2.58 for regular today, and gas buddy says $3.53 is the cheapest diesel near me. I've averaged 14800 miles a year for the 4.5 years I've had my current car, so I'll around it off to 15k. Since I drive a little more streets than highway, I'm going to use 45 mpg for the Prius, and 35 mpg for the TDI.
If my math is right, I will need 333 gallons a year for the Prius, and 429 for the TDI. At today's prices, that would be $859 a year for the Prius, and $1514 for the TDI. So right around the same 4.5 years that I've had my TL, the Prius should be cheaper to own.
This doesn't factor in tax credits, because I don't think you can get one on a Prius anymore, and I'm not sure on the TDI. There was a new bill introduced back in July, but I don't know how far it got.
