I just saw The Happening, I didn't like it much at all. I liked most of M Night's previous movies, Sixth Sense and The Village were my favorites, and Unbreakable I thought was good too, though I didn't like Signs or Lady in the Water much. The Happening just has too many obvious problems. What could have been a really scary movie was paced totally wrong. The lack of information, instead of making the movie mysterious or scary just made me not really care.
The rest might be considered a minor spoiler, so stop reading if you care.
*SPOILER WARNING*
It was like the disaster was totally random about where and who it killed. So it was hard to really care about the characters who were dying, it was just like "oh well" bad luck for them. Then there was the whole arbitrary relationship issue, which made Zooey Deschanel's character seem like a stupid emo bitch and as a result I had no sympathy for Mark Wahlberg's character since he was stupid enough to stay with her, I just didn't care about the main characters at all. It was a rather pointless to the movie IMO, the movie could have been so much better if the stupid artificial relationship problems were removed and instead more details of the mystery were revealed and some sort of consistency or rules about who was effected was revealed. I thought the movie would be something like I Am Legend. Well, it was like I Am Legend except instead of being a virus that turned people into zombies, it was a mysterious force that affected people apparently totally at random, and instead of turning them into zombies that ate humans it turned them into zombies that committed suicide as quickly as possible. I was really really hoping that there would be some twist where certain people are immune to the effects, which it even looked like in some of the scene where one person is seemingly unaffected while everyone else is frozen while the thing is effecting them, but that detail was completely ignored through the rest of the movie.
