Excellent review, which identifies the main issues that need to be addressed and how MS can correct them "in a future release".

The main question is whether this future release will be Win8 SP1 or Win9.

It will be easy for Microsoft to fix the issues in Win8 since they are just tweaks really. So I would expect SP1 for the fixes.

Microsoft will fix the OS, but for advertising reasons it is not acknowledging the problems, just as with WP7 when all the omissions were claimed to be features. For WP it took a full version (WP8) to fix the problems, but the problems were serious architectutral problems unlike Win8.

I think Win8 is pretty good, sure you have to except its design for tablet users as well and they have moved and change things, however its fast, stable and has given me zero issues so got to call it as I see and use it .

Its good enough for me to upgrade my Win7 laptop to 8 in a few weeks times, speed and improved battery life alone are good enough reasons, not to mention pricing .

Exactly. MS added to this version of it's OS instead of subtracting. They added more features, made it stabler, made it faster, and overall, just a better experience IMO. I'll be upgrading my desktop, and I'll be looking to get a tablet of some sort come Surface time.

Is anyone running Win8 from an SSD boot? If so, how long to boot up?

I recently picked up a Samsung Series 7 17.3 inch laptop that came with 8GB RAM and 1TB HD and it would boot in about 50 seconds. I then replaced the HD with a 256GB SSD and my boot time is now 20 seconds. The charts I've seen comparing Win7 and Win8 seem to indicate Win8 boots is less than half the time, but that's with HD's -- anyone got some numbers for boot time with SSD?

What is the process for upgrading to Win8 from Win7 anyway? Need to do the format and start over thing for best results due to drivers?

Personally I think the best way would be to format and start new, but it is possible to upgrade from 7 and I know a couple people have done that.
I know that upgrading in place from vista to 7 definitely wasn't perfect, and slowed down the system.

The best thing I got out of it was using Win+C to bring up the charms bar so I can shutdown my Server 2012 VM without running the shutdown command from cmd.

I like it. Honestly, I use the start menu for one thing - launching software.

The new "start screen" is just as fast and the search is MUCH faster. And it's the same procedure: hit Windows Key, start typing, hit Enter.

I'm a fan of metro, so while I would like translucency to be an option, I'm happy to see the rounded corners go.
