My HDD appears dead, but of course I want to get my data off it. The way it died was progressive, I would boot and get a HDD failure message from the mobo a few times in a row then it would suddenly work the 5th time. It would work ok till I next rebooted taking even more reboots to get it working again til that day it wouldn't work no matter how many reboots I tried. Stupid me thought it was a dying PSU. Now not only will it not work now, anything on the same IDE channel won't work with it connected. Isn't that a sign of hope? It's alive enough to send of death signals to the other IDE device. It's not simply dead, it's undead!
I listened to the drive as I powered up and it makes no noise whatsoever. Like it wasn't even connected. If I shake it I hear something is loose around the head assembly area, I don't know if it's supposed to be that way seeing as how I never bothered to shake a HDD before.
Well I found this and tried many of the things there to no avail. double checking the connections and bois settings, trying it in every slave/master combination possible, trying it in another computer, tapping it when it powers up, hitting it, twisitng it, calling it names, apologizing, promising to make it up to it, but nothing works. I even tried freezing it and that didn't work. In fact it was so cold that it hurt my fingers to touch it, really cold. I didn't try fdisk or some of the other suggestions to try from a book disk because well, it doesn't even power up and the mobo won't recognize it. Unless fdisk is magical and can access it anyway?
I don't think there are any other free things for me to try. I could buy an identical drive and swap the circuit board. But it would suck to void the warrenty. I'm not paying over $100 so you can forget data recovery services where they take apart the drive in a clean room. Unless I can haggle and get them to take it apart in a sorta clean room that was only puked in twice, they swear!
