For a home defense gun, you'll probably want to add a tac light to it. Can that be done on the wheel gun? Also, what's your primary home defense weapon?

I'd be doing most of my shooting at the range with .38 special which is less powerful than 9mm.

Here's where I think you should use the cartridge the gun was meant for. If you wanted to shoot .38 special, buy a .38 special revolver for cheap.

I have an AR-15 had a .22 conversion for it. Shooting .22s through it was not fun and a waste of money. Sold that .22 conversion.

Can they be? Yep. Would I trust my life to any out of the box 1911 with HP's? Nope. If you go the 1911 route you have to be willing to invest in a proper amount of testing with your carry load of choice. The RIA's are a great value but aren't immune to 1911 issues. Feeding HP's is an ongoing problem from $400 RIA's to $2000 custom jobs.

Who says they have to shoot hollow points? FMJ does the job just fine.

And if someone comes in here and recommends the XD series, go screw yourself and your awful awful cheap Croatian garbage.

XDs are good guns.

That Smith would be more accurate out of the box, if that's important to you.

You can drive nails with a good revolver.

I'd look for an old Ruger Service Six or GP100. Will be cheaper and can eat full power .357 Mag forever.
The Smiths and Colts can shoot them, but it's not recommended to be it's only load.

As far as a Semi goes, I wouldn't get the M&P unless your going to invest in fixing the gritty stock trigger.

Revolver for sure. That's one of the best all-time there as well. Short of deliberate extreme abuse, it's not going to fail you.

Once you have the revolver covered, then you can move on to some decent semi-autos. For those, I recommend something like a compact 10mm, and a .45 as a companion piece.

AR-15 (colt 6920) with 10 rounds of Hornady TAP 75gr. There's a streetlight right outside my apartment and my blinds suck at keeping the light out so it's never really "dark" in my bedroom. I can see the sights on my AR-15 right after I turn the lights off (so my eyes aren't even adjusted to the dark yet).

Here's where I think you should use the cartridge the gun was meant for. If you wanted to shoot .38 special, buy a .38 special revolver for cheap.

*shrug* .38special is the same thing as .357mag just with less powder behind it and a 1/8" shorter case

I like the semi's personally. Added capacity over the higher power of the 357.

Yeah I'd be much more likely to go with the M&P if I lived in a state where we could have normal capacity magazines. But 10+1 isn't a whole lot more than 7 rounds. And if there's a problem that 7 rounds of .357mag can't fix I'd be better off grabbing the AR anyway.

the 627 is a nice gun with almost 15% more capacity than the 686+.

Cost wise it makes sense.
850/7=121.43 per shot
970/8=121.25 per shot
More bang for your buck.

Nah seriously though, my next one will be the 627. Need something alittle bit smaller in the barrel length than my hunting revolvers.

Good God man.

1) You dont understand one of the primary attractions of the 22 conversions then.

2) You dont understand terminal ballistics

3) Cant argue that, XD's are great.

I know I know. But I've probably shot about 1-2k rounds through handguns in my lifetime so it's not like I'm a complete noob.

And I can always get one of those after I go broke shooting centerfire :awe:

Ok, cool. Then I would still go ahead and take the pistol course. Try as many different pistols as you can before laying down your cash.

If that new Ruger SR1911 is available, I'd take a hard look at it. $600, 100% made in the USA, Series 70, and Ruger has always been dependable.

But you really have to shoot a gun to know if it's right for you. It has to sit right in your hand. When the Ruger P85 came out, I loved it on paper, but it felt way too high in my hand. I wouldn't take one if you gave it to me.

since you live in crapifornia, i would compensate the lower magazine capacity with higher caliber.

why dont you be a man and get like a 1911 or a .44

How much experience do you have with handguns. A lot of people are "one or the other." You'll either like semis or revolvers. I personally don't like revolvers much because of the way you have to hold it and how the recoil works.

Oh, and best of both worlds = 9mm 1911. I have 2. A springfield loaded and a smith & wesson. Otherwise, I really like the M&P. If you get the M&P though, APEX parts (sear and striker block) are almost required. I only buy my stuff single-shotted or from private parties though since I don't buy anything with a magazine disconnect.

This is what I'm most likely getting (for home defense), unless my wife's mom gives us one of their many guns.

I've got more experience with revolvers because that's what my Grandpa likes and I've done about 90% of my handgun shooting with him.

not if youre schneiderguy and toting his 357 around in his 'man'-purse.

If I carried around a purse I'd still be more manly than the rest of ATOT combined

Another vote for the revolver.
Just keep your booger hook off the bang switch until it's party time.
Oh,,and I hope you never have to use it other than target practice or hunting.
