I'd be doing most of my shooting at the range with .38 special which is less powerful than 9mm.
Can they be? Yep. Would I trust my life to any out of the box 1911 with HP's? Nope. If you go the 1911 route you have to be willing to invest in a proper amount of testing with your carry load of choice. The RIA's are a great value but aren't immune to 1911 issues. Feeding HP's is an ongoing problem from $400 RIA's to $2000 custom jobs.
And if someone comes in here and recommends the XD series, go screw yourself and your awful awful cheap Croatian garbage.
That Smith would be more accurate out of the box, if that's important to you.
You can drive nails with a good revolver.
How do you limp wrist a 9mm? :\
For a home defense gun, you'll probably want to add a tac light to it. Can that be done on the wheel gun? Also, what's your primary home defense weapon?
Here's where I think you should use the cartridge the gun was meant for. If you wanted to shoot .38 special, buy a .38 special revolver for cheap.
I like the semi's personally. Added capacity over the higher power of the 357.

I have an AR-15 had a .22 conversion for it. Shooting .22s through it was not fun and a waste of money. Sold that .22 conversion.
Who says they have to shoot hollow points? FMJ does the job just fine.
XDs are good guns.
On topic:
Pick the one that feels the best and you enjoy shooting the most.
LOL, :thumbsup:And if someone comes in here and recommends the XD series, go screw yourself and your awful awful cheap Croatian garbage.
I know I know. But I've probably shot about 1-2k rounds through handguns in my lifetime so it's not like I'm a complete noob.
And I can always get one of those after I go broke shooting centerfire :awe:
since you live in crapifornia, i would compensate the lower magazine capacity with higher caliber.
why dont you be a man and get like a 1911 or a .44
.357 is more manly than .45acp

How much experience do you have with handguns. A lot of people are "one or the other." You'll either like semis or revolvers. I personally don't like revolvers much because of the way you have to hold it and how the recoil works.
Oh, and best of both worlds = 9mm 1911. I have 2. A springfield loaded and a smith & wesson. Otherwise, I really like the M&P. If you get the M&P though, APEX parts (sear and striker block) are almost required. I only buy my stuff single-shotted or from private parties though since I don't buy anything with a magazine disconnect.
not if youre schneiderguy and toting his 357 around in his 'man'-purse.
