I saw the first two in 2006 (made in 1995 and 2004), just got Before Midnight from the library. 9 years between the making of each of these 3 films. Should I rewatch the first two before seeing the 3rd? I'm thinking maybe a good idea. The first movie was IMO fantastic. Not sure the 2nd worked as well for me, but it's been 8 years! The 3rd has fantastic ratings.

Do you have a vagina? If not, why the fuck would you watch any of them?

Never heard of them.

Are they like Twilight movies I laugh at my wife about?

I've had a few and dld them for her enough she has gotten embaraddes even asking about them after I delete them later.

Thought I'd ask.
Dunno, I didn't watch the Twilight movies.

Edit: Looking now I see that the Twilight movies got terrible ratings at Rotten Tomatoes.

Hey, look, at Rotten Tomatoes Before Midnight is rated 8.7/10, 170 fresh, 3 rotten, IOW 57 people liked it for every person who didn't. Those are damned good odds.

Last I checked (long time ago), Before Sunrise was RT rated 8.1/10, 31 fresh, 0 rotten. Before Sunset was RT rated 8.2, 142 fresh, 9 rotten. People love these movies. All female? I think not.

Hey, I say give yourself a chance and see these movies, folks.

Go for it. I was going to watch all three in one sitting (haven't seen any), but I got to the part where they're about to deboard the train on the first one... and I was like, "Yeah, kinda slow here. I get it, but I'm not in the mood."

And they've been sitting on my drive ever since.

I would probably watch the third one, and then if there were plot points that didn't make sense (because they relied on stuff from the first two that I had forgotten) then I'd go back and rewatch.

Watch them, I bet you'll be glad you did. If you've ever been into having relationships with the opposite sex, you should dig these. Give them a chance.

Thing is I watched the 2nd two weeks after watching the first (back in 2006). My strong feeling then was actually that I should have watched the first again immediately before watching the second. My plan now is to watch them in order on successive days.

It's not a bad idea. The latest one is tough but very relatable for the 40+ married w/ kids set.

love these movies. i saw the third one at one of those art house theaters.

some of the shots are actually really well done (single shot) and the first two movies are real-time, which is pretty cool. love the locations they shot in.

I'm a dude and it's a great series given what it is. I like how it spanned those years with the same actors and characters.

Third one is tough though if you can relate at all to it.

It doesn't hurt to rewatch either of the prequels but the third film stands on its own pretty well. Very different feel and subject, as others have said, but seeing Hawke and Delpy together again with Linklater directing was one of the movie highlights of 2013 for me.

I wouldn't. When I saw Before Sunset I hadn't seen Before Sunrise in many years, and I think it adds to the feeling that a lot of time has passed. Maybe rewatch them after if you want to see them again. This reminds me that I already bought this, so I should probably watch it.

Watched Before Sunset last night (the 2nd in the series), Before Sunrise (the first), two nights before. Going to watch Before Midnight (the third) tonight for the first time. Looking in my notes I found the Rotten Tomatoes post that convinced me to watch these in the first place. It's very convincing:

Aram Fingal says this in his sig linked thread "8,000! The A-Z of Aram's DVDs!"

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/vine/showthread.php?p=7315037

Before Sunrise / Before Sunset

(Aram Fingal had here the below-quoted poem created for the two main characters by the poet they encountered in their strolling in the first movie) *

It took me many years of people frantically recommending these movies for me to sit down and watch them, and now I'm deeply sorry I waited so long. Richard Linklater's classic, understated study of two young people and their brief but deeply meaningful encounter, is so much fun to watch. Julie Delpy is smart and alluring, but not above a rude comment or two -- she's no prim and perfect love interest, but a real person, every bit as interesting as the cynical, sarcastic, somewhat irritating Ethan Hawke. The movie tackles nearly every subject under the sun as these two characters walk through Vienna, engaging in a microcosm of a relationship, sharing everything of each other that they can in the short time that they're together.

Of course, when Linklater returns to these characters ten years later, they've grown and changed, and the sequel is not quite so breathlessly romantic as the original... but moves on a very different, more mature level. It deals with the lessons that everyone who grows into adulthood must learn... about compromise, sacrifice, responsibility... and temptation.

I simply adore these films.

* The poem:

"Daydream, delusion, limousine, eyelash / Oh baby with your pretty face / Drop a tear in my wineglass / Look at those big eyes / See what you mean to me / Sweet-cakes and milkshakes / I'm delusion angel / I'm fantasy parade / I want you to know what I think / Don't want you to guess anymore / You have no idea where I came from / We have no idea where we're going / Latched in life / Like branches in a river/ Flowing downstream / Caught in the current / I'll carry you / You'll carry me / That's how it could be / Don't you know me? / Don't you know me by now?"

Excerpt of Roget Ebert's review of the second movie: "Before Sunrise" was a remarkable celebration of the fascination of good dialogue. But "Before Sunset" is better, perhaps because the characters are older and wiser, perhaps because they have more to lose (or win), and perhaps because Hawke and Delpy wrote the dialogue themselves. The film has the materials for a lifetime project; like the "7-Up" series, this is a conversation that could be returned to every 10 years or so, as Celine and Jesse grow older.
