RH7.1 and Samba problems

Hello, I am trying to learn linux, so please bear with me. I installed RH7.1 and cannot get swat to auto start in linuxconf. No matter what I try, it stays on manual and will not accept any changes that I make to it. While fooling around with the system, swat started to work, but linuxconf still had it on manual and the service is stopped. Anyone know how to fix this issue? Also, how do I modify the firewall that the setup created for me to allow users to connect to the samba shares? When I disable the ipchains and firewall services, I can connect from my Win2k system, but could not when the services were enabled. The firewall was set for medium settings with the custom allowance for SSH connections to work.

Thanks in advance.

No idea why swat will not work for you... I never liked it so never really learned it at all...

As for the ipchains issue, I don't know that either, I use a hardware firewall... **Edit** However, I know that webmin also has IPChains configs as well as almost ANY other service you could use on linux...

Your firewall is probably blocking ports 137, 138, and 139, buth TCP and UDP protocols.. undo that and you'll be fine.

TO be honest joe, I had problems with the exact same thing, except I used swat under RH 7.0. I seem to have too many issues with 7.1 (I'm in the same boat as you, new to linux...). Come to find out, swat ran off an identd (think that's right) process. I put a line in that file and *spoof* it worked, I'll check the book I used to see if I can find that info for you again.

As for the firewall, same thing too on the firewall. My problem was with telnet though, I couldn't get my client to connect even though I selected telnet traffic in setup. I personally couldn't figure it out, so I decided to go back to RH 7.0. For an answer to your question, it doesn't matter if you opened SSH (thats the secure shell) it won't help for Samba connectivity ( i think). What you need instead is to modify the /etc/services/ipchains file to allow for connectivity on the ports Loco stated above, both UDP and TCP. The ipchains file is what the firewall dameaon reads to determine what is allowed and turned away. Hence, the packet filtering scheme. I'm still very new to this as well, so if I state something wrong, please forgive me. Since no one else was helping you, I thought I'd give it a chop. There is also a GUI config utility in KDE and GNOME that helps you configure the firewall ipchains file, but I couldn't get it to work. There are a few options and targets that you have to take into account, that I can;t speak on yet, as I KNOW I'm wrong on them. Hope this helps, if not, write back and I'll try again....

I'm almost sure you meant "inetd" here. Check /etc/inetd.conf, this is probably the file you want to be editing, if any. However, RH 7.1 uses xinetd these days...I'd tell you which file but Time-Warner seems to be crapping on my at the moment...can't ssh back to my box at home.
