Their RIAA is suing a young transplant patient in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Nineteen-year-old Ciara Sauro has pancreatitis and because she needs an islet cell transplant, she?s hospitalized every week, a situation resulting in a huge accumulation of medical bills.

Now, ?Because she didn?t defend herself against a copyright lawsuit, a federal judge in Pittsburgh ruled she?s a music pirate, and that could cost the Sauros almost $8,000 in fines,? says Pittsburg news channel WTAE.com.

?I already have severe depression,? the story has her saying. ?I mean, it?s so hard to sit there and think that I have to get in trouble for something that I didn?t do. It?s not fair.?

It isn?t.

But then, fairness isn?t a word the Big 4 or Mitch Bainwol and Cary Sherman, the two spinsters who run their RIAA, understand.

Sauro is accused of of illegally sharing 10 songs online and, ?You want to know the truth?? - the story has her mother, Lisa, saying.

?I make $8.25 an hour. She can?t work. This child is very sick. I mean, what am I supposed to do?

?I just want them to know that I have to go through enough stress in my life with my sickness and my family, and I don?t think that they should go after people just because they want money for something that?s not even fair to us.?

I know ATOT is the land of devil's advocates, but...meh.

Yeah, not going to get a lot of sympathy from me. If you want to download, you better be willing to pay the price. The circumstances surrounding her life are irrelevant.

I guess it's bad PR, but RIAA has totally destroyed their public image, so I doubt they really care.

However, I do think that the settlements and statutory damages for cases like this are insane. If I had my way, she'd pay market price for her downloads. 10 songs = $10 check to RIAA.

Though I feel sorry for her, her being sick shouldn't exclude her from being charged; a crime is a crime regardless of her health condition.

Also, I think it sends clear signal to the mass. I mean, if RIAA can go after a hospitalized girl, they'd sure get my ass.

I'm not disagreeing with you.

But what if that money is the difference between getting the medical procedures she needs. Lets pretend that if she doesn't have that money, she won't be able to afford to live.

What's even more sickning is people like OJ simpson get away with crime that actually affects people. How many years has he been getting away with murder now and the law doing fuck all? They seriously need to get their priorities straight.

Piracy does NOT negatively affect people, murder does - go after the murderers and child molestors.

IMO they should just legalize piracy, and abolish the RIAA altogether. I wish someone would bomb the RIAA. Actually, I'd go for dumping anthrax in the ventilation system. They can see how it is to be sick.

What I don't get is, why gives them so much power anyway? You know there's something wrong with the system when some company can have enough power to do shit like this legaly.

I agree that she should accept the consequences, but it's not like the RIAA is lacking in people to go after. There's no justice here. The RIAA wanted an easy kill, so they went after the relatively poor girl with pancreatitis who couldn't defend herself. Over 10 songs no less.

Whoever called this suit should get his balls kicked until he goes unconscious.

Apparently you've never heard of punishment fitting the crime. Share a few songs and get fined tens of thousands of dollars--that makes a whole lot of sense.
