Always thought it was silly but I'm sure someone here has one. What are the pros/cons?

Get an Instant Pot unless you need the precision of a $500 rice cooker that doesn't have English anywhere on it or in the manual.

I've got a Tiger brand rice cooker that works excellent. Rice stays good in there for days after it's done cooking. Got it as an anniversary gift a few years ago and no problems so far.

Jesus christ not this crap again.

Do a search.

Two categories:

A: If you are white person that seldom eat rice, no you don't need it. Rice cam be cooked just fine using a pot.

B: If you are Asian or eat rice super regularly (i.e. at least twice a day), you need it.

Category A people will scream on about how you don't need it, when entire nations of Korea, Japan, and China all own rice cooker at home. It's more ubiquitous than having a toaster.

Advantages of a rice cooker:
1. It keeps rice warm, ready to eat any time. This is the primary reason for category B.

2. $300+ pressurised cookers actually cook the better and objectively tastier. Rice comes out distictly spongier/fluffy vs cheap $30 ones.

I have a slow cooker that does rice. I used to have a rice cooker. My advice is to get a slow cooker or an instant pot rather than a dedicated rice cooker.

I got one, and it's awesome. You can make Chinese take-out quality rice. Trying to do it manually in a pot is a pretty intensive science that's just not worth the effort.

Though Instant pot may also work as suggested. I recently bought myself an Actifryer, my next toy might be an Instant Pot.

Always thought it was silly but I'm sure someone here has one. What are the pros/cons?

Depends.

There are multiple levels of rice cookers, starting at out the basic crockpot-style models for like $20. The best ones are computerized rice cookers (~$150). I had one for many years & it was fantastic. It did a great job not only for cooking rice, but for keeping rice warm all day. That was nice because my living situation at the time was such that all of my housemates & I were eating at random times of the day, so you could walk over, get a big warm scoop of rice, toss some leftovers on it from the fridge, and have a quick meal. They also have higher-end computerized rice cookers that are also pressurized ($300 to $1000+). Those do the best job, but you really have to like rice to spring for one of those.

The alternative is the Instant Pot, which is an electric pressure cooker. It's basically a faster crockpot, and can do more stuff than just a crockpot or a standalone rice cooker can. It makes fantastic rice, but it's not so good at holding the rice all day. I eat based on a meal plan now, so I ended up getting rid of my dedicated fuzzy-logic rice cooker & just using the Instant Pot for preparing rice these days.

Both are good, it just depends on how you plan on using it. If I had more room available, I probably would have kept my computerized rice cooker. Although those also take longer...like 60 minutes to make rice vs. the Instant Pot, which takes 20 minutes. Of course, you can get a pressurized rice cooker, but those cost at least twice as much as a regular induction pressure cooker in most cases, so it depends on what your goals are & what your budget is.

The effort vs. convenience thing is huge. One of the themes I constantly see in bread machine threads is how easy it is to make homemade bread using a mixer & an oven...yeah, but that's not the point. I can make RideFree's 13-cent bread machine bread recipe in 2 minutes flat before I go to bed, and wake up to a nice loaf of toastable bread. It's not any harder to make delicious bread with my KitchenAid & oven...but in reality, having a nice little dump & go system (bread machine, rice maker, instant pot, whatever it is in question) is actually a huge benefit because it means you'll actually use it, if you integrate it into your routine. I make mixer bread...sometimes...but mostly I make no-knead bread or bread machine bread just because it doesn't require any actual effort, which means I actually do it instead of just talking about doing it, lol.

The Instant rice in a normal pot turns out great. No need for a silly rice cooker.

I picked up one at Costco 5 years ago and it's great. Sure, you can cook rice in a pot on the stovetop...it's been done for decades, but a decent rice cooker will do a better job...and all you have to do is add rice, water, and push a button...no timer needed, no tending needed.
I now make better rice than I've ever had in any chinese or japanese restaurant.
