I never tried the pressure cookers but I can say that the rice cooker I have is so awesome I cant imagine it getting any better. I got one from a brand called Miracle. Its probably my favorite kitchen device... always cooks rice perfectly and does it automatically. Just plug and forget.

What is it specifically that makes great rice cookers great (aside from not burning/browning bottom) that not-so-great rice cookers don't do?

Wife casually mentioned she might like a new rice cooker. Trying to decide between Induction heating Pressure cooker vs plain Induction heating cooker. Anyone have the induction pressure cooker and is it worth the extra premium over the plain induction cooker? We mostly eat medium or short grain white rice.

If you are just using the pressure cooker for boiling rice.. then it is not worth it. Any semi decent rice cooker can boil rice perfectly.

I mainly use pressure cooker to boil lentils.

Also, $400 just for cooking rice? WTF?

Not the same. Rice cookers are awesome.

Also, I've read some Amazon reviews that those pressurized ones don't have robust seals. I'm a bit skeptical that they would fail so quickly but who knows. I also can't really see the big advantage of induction heating. I've never really had any issues with standard heating elements.

I have this one:

Pressure rice cooker can cook the rice faster, plus at the correct temperature if you are at higher altitudes.

why would you need pressure cooker?

<--- Korean
<--- Koreans mastered the rice cooker
<--- They taste different night and day.

Regular cooker = plain rice

Pressure cooker = Same rice is more 'grainy' tasting, extra sticky, chewy, and overall fucking delicious.

Honestly the best way to cook rice is a pressure pot on a stove.

It creates a layer of brown crunchy rice at bottom, SO GOOD

I don't get rice cookers either. An appliance that does the same thing as a medium size sauce pan with a lid. :whiste:

I can cook 2 cups of rice in about 20 minutes. What's the hurry?

if you don't cook rice on a regularly basis (everyday), I don't think it's worth the money for a dedicated rice cooker.

That said, IH cooker cooks rice perfectly without having to worry about water/temperature of the stove. Having pressure + IH in the model mentioned above actually cooks fluffier rice than just IH, and the rice won't become hard when set on keep warm for a long period of time 6-8 hours.

Try and leave a sauce pan cooking rice unattended or having it keep rice warm after it's cooked. A rice cooker is a must if you eat a lot of rice.

After reading the reviews and thinking it over, I decided on the regular induction heating model. It's cheaper and proven vs the pressure model which seems to require more cleaning and maintenance. I'm also concerned about complaints of the seal failing on the pressure model. But during the two hours I was doing the research, Amazon raised the price of the regular cooker $57. Bastards. Now I have to wait for another price drop or check out the local Asian marts.

As for the need/price rice cooker debate...it is what it is. People spend thousands on BBQ grill. Same w/ coffee machines. I have $800 coffee machine which I use everyday and think it's worth it over $20 coffee machines. We eat rice 1-3 meals each day/ 365 days. I'm buying the 10 cup model instead of the smaller 5 which should tell you we eat lot of rice. We already have 10 cup Zojirushi rice cooker but it's the standard non-induction kind. So the induction model will be an upgrade regardless. But pressure model is the top of the line so I was curious if people thought it was worth the extra money.

WTF? I do this all the time. You just turn the heat down to simmer and set a timer for 20 minutes. 2 cups of rice, cooked, will stay warm for quite a while if you keep it covered.

My wife and I made rice to go with stir fried lemon scallops the other night and the rice sat for 10-15 minutes before we ate and was still plenty warm 20 minutes later. We probably make rice dishes 2-3 times a week and I always use either a Jasmine rice or Basmati rice.

I don't typically graze all day long on rice so a rice cooker is a completely useless appliance IMO.

Read the OP's situation about eating rice every day multiple times a day and you'll understand why a rice cooker isn't a useless appliance. YOU might not need one but millions of Asian households disagree with you.

What's really funny is that millions of Asians probably couldn't cook rice without a rice cooker but this white guy can make perfect rice every time without one.

I can see how a pressure rice cooker would be nice when cooking brown rice. That stuff takes forever!

fail

good job in falling for a marketing scam.

I live at 5,280 feet above sea level my 10.00 pot of boiling water can cook rice just as good as a 400 dollar "pressure" pot.

Technically your 10$ pot will cook slightly slower since the boiling point of water at sea level is 212F. At 5250 feet it is 202F. Not much different but technically it will be slower than at sea level.
