Ok i finally broke down and purchased one (only $30). I was getting tired of going through 1-2 big box's of uncle bens white rice a month (i make rice a couple times week).

I got some cheap rice (ok no name crap from the store). I tried it once in just a pot and it came out nasty. witch is why i got the rice cooker.

I tried it today and the rice is sticky and well kind slimy. but its still very good.

the instructions didn't say to wash it but heard i should.

any tips on kind of rice?

and you cook them diferently

for the most part, washing rice generally improved flavor even if it isn't strictly required (especially for domestic rice... it's more mandatory for imported rice)

How large of a bag?

I see the small 2lb bags of rice going for $4 or so at the market, and down some other aisle they'll have 10 or 20lb bags for $8.

Of course you need to be able to store all of that rice, and I'm not sure how long it lasts, even in the right conditions.

well everytime i go to the supermarker i ask a clerk i want to make that food what rice to buy

well practically you ought to wash everything before you use it in cooking
in order to be sur eyou remove any dirt on them
that is unhealty and will change the flavor

uncooked white rice can be stored safely for 8-10 years if it's in an airtight container at a stable temperature (https://www.usaemergencysupply.com/information_center/storage_life_of_foods.htm#link16) assuming it's kept safe from any pests.

I don't eat rice anymore, but back when I ate it frequently, I stored it in a hard-plastic air-tight container that seemed to work pretty well.

it was like $4 or so. i don't have a 10-20lb container i think the one i have is 2 gallons.

Anyway, if you want non sticky rice.. try Basmati or Sona Massuri.

Basmati is available everywhere and Sona Massuri is mostly available in Indian stores but it is a bit cheaper than Basmati.

1 cup of rice cooked in 2 cups of water should yield perfect rice.

rice quality does matter, i've eaten some horrible costco rice, forget the brand.

You should use the first knuckle rule, whether in a pot or in a cooker. Add your rice, then add enough water to so that your submerged index finger touches the top of the rice, and there is enough water to go up to the first knuckle on your index finger. I usually rinse the rice first, but just a rinse and not a soak. Thats just cause it was what I was taught to do. I used to use any kind of long grain, if it had asian writing on it, it was good enough. Now I use basmati, just because these days I eat Indian food more frequently than Japanese/Chinese food.
