A buddy of mine has a black card. He doesn't get treated any differently when people see it.
It doesn't matter how often or what frequency your amex isn't taken, why not just have a quick get out of a jam cash on hand. takes up little space. It would be the equivalent of you or me keeping an emergency 50 in our wallet.
I didn't say don't carry your amex. and btw amex black card or not amex isn't accepted everywhere, though its probably not an issue in Manhattan.
There are very few "jams" as you put it where $5,000 in cash would help you without being some sort of shady possibly illegal transaction.
Also, do you know what pulling out a stack of 100s gets you? Mugged.
Does he frequent high-end places? My friend also has one and when we go to night clubs in the city they will let us right in and provide us table service, or when I've been shopping with him at high-end places they sometimes will either close the store or provide him a personal shopper, etc. Also when travelling he automatically is upgraded, and when he wanted superbowl tickets last year he called 3 days before and they had the tickets overnighted to him in the lower level...not to mention it def turns some girls' heads at even a local dive bar (sure, they may be golddiggers but whatever no one is looking to marry 'em)
Trust me...there are benefits, maybe your buddy just isn't using them to his full advantage.

Damn, I've never see a store close or anything, but he'll get better seats at restaurants and stuff. He definitely takes advantage of airline upgrades and things like that, I've just never really noticed anyone gawk over the card. Maybe I'm blind though
Also, he almost exclusively visits crazy-expensive places, especially for food.
Yea same with my friend...loves good restaurants. Went to Spain recently and ate at Ferran Adria's new restaurant, he told me and my other buddy that this dinner was "on him and to get anything we wanted"...total bill was like $1500 for three of us (mainly cause of the bottles of wine we drank)...great meal though. One of the best I've ever had.
Your friend a trader?
i just think its pretty funny, considering 250k is FDIC haha
Besides documenting an amazing $99,864,731.94 savings account, it illustrates one truth that every New Yorker knows -- no matter who you are or how much you have, you can't escape ATM fees.

How absurd. I wish my savings balance showed that.
The guy should have taken that slip, gone to some fancy club, macked on the hottest chick there saying he was from out of town and then wrote his phone number on the back of it to give to her.
It only works once, but it's free so...
You know what though?
The ATM limit affects this guy just like anyone else.
Here he is with $100 million and all he can spend at that moment is $400
no matter who you are or how much you have, you can't escape ATM fees.

Some trophy wife is wondering why her husband needed $400 cash at 10pm.
