Looks like some people have grown a conscience? maybe they figured out it's not all about money?
Maybe they realized there's something called "solidarity" that's also important, and that no man is an island...

In any case, I find it quite telling that, while you're debating questions like these: http://forums.anandtech.com/me...=2344352&enterthread=y , others are really concerned about the overall quality of life not just for themselves, but for the rest of their compatriots.

"'The path out of the crisis must be paved with massive investment in ecology, education and social justice,' they say in the petition."

Nice. maybe there's a lesson to be learned there?

Uh we always have rich people in this country calling for this, Warren Buffet anybody? 44 people dumb enough to want to give politicians more money? Go for it.

But I suspect in the long run they have other plans. The govt you pay for is the govt you get.

Um...there has always been an option to give more money to the government on your tax return. I wonder if you have "grown a conscience" and used that option? I'd also be curious to know just how many "crusaders of social justice" have ever exercised that option?

Of course, most/all will claim they have, but I wonder how many actually have. I'd wager it is quite low, judging by how little liberals actually give to charity...

Gotta love how someone living in Canada is all of a sudden an expert commentator on what Americans say...

If the taxes were to be used in a manner that will actually benefit the country vs handouts/pork, people might be more willing to accept a higher tax rate.

Consider taxes to be an investment - what is the ROI. In Germany and other countries, the ROI for a higher tax may be better than what the US crooks provide in our governmnet.

Taxing anyone with a "fortune" of 500,000 euros? So anyone that owns a home in Calif. should pay 5% per year on top of all their other taxes so the Government can wisely invest in such great economic stimulus areas as the ecology and social justice? A story about 44 idiots supporting this out of 2.2 million they want to pay it. Let's have a vote and see how it turns out.

17 of the 25 largest private charitable foundations in the world are from the US.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L...charitable_foundations

IIRC, even 7 or 8 the top 10 or so worldwide charities are primarily US funded and based.

The US gives more public and private aid to the world than than the rest of the developed nations combined.

You Canadians can go fucking lecture someone else about having a conscience.

People are free to do with their money as they wish. Just don't enforce it on others.

Speaking for myself, I don't consider entrusting hard-earned money (and yes, it is hard-earned) to government spending a wise choice.

Yes and somehow taxation on wealthy Americans co-relates to US funding of charity incentives how?

The tax brackets for individuals making $100K+ in the US in majority of states pales compared to the rest of the world. No wonder the schools and healthcare systems are broken in the US.

Is a millionaire rich? Yes. Do you realize how many Congressman/Senators are not millionaires? We have an entire party of them advocating more taxes for themselves. Not to mention the rich contributors and organizers who fund the Dems.

It is insane to say you?ll never hear it from rich Americans.

The problems with the schools isn't due to a lack of $

Signatory Peter Vollmer told AFP news agency he was supporting the proposal because he had inherited "a lot of money I do not need".

Well, there's one trust fund kid who's a bit more honest than his American counterparts.

Schools and health care are broken because of the bureaucracy in place than keeps them broken. The US already spends more per student than any other country in the world. I don't see how continuing to throw even more money at a broken model is better than fixing it from the ground up.

If we didn't have so much damn pork and the feds concentrated on only issues of constitutional importance our taxes wouldn't need to be higher...actually they would be much lower.

Actually I saw some statistics a while back that said 25% of them were college dropouts speaking of the multi billionaires.

Some of them are born into it

Signatory Peter Vollmer told AFP news agency he was supporting the proposal because he had inherited "a lot of money I do not need".

But i'm not pointing out that Buffet is rich because he's smart (although that's part of it), he's also smart because he sees American society crumbling around him due to the greed, short sightedness, and stupidity of the Republican Orthodoxy
