Ok, I'm bored out of my skull @ work, and figured it would be fun if people posted riddles/puzzles and answered them in this thread. it might be a good idea to mark your posts with SPOILER or the like if you are providing an answer or hint.

I'll start with a very simple (somewhat open ended) puzzle:

Why are sewer (man hole) covers usually round?

Simply because side length < diagonal length for a square. Whereas for a circle there is uniform length all around

- Well, since they have a lip on them to sit on, if you were to tilk the cover on its side it would not be able to fall into the hole.

a circle is a lot easier to roll out of a hole then a square would be. 1 person could do it as opposed to two.

Mary is as old as Richard will be when Mary is twice as old as Richard was when Mary's age was half the sum of their present ages.

How old are Mary and Richard?

How old are Mary and Richard?

There are many answers.

3M = 4R is the equation.

So, Mary could be 4 and Richard 3 or Mary could be 8 and Richard 6, etc.
