usually there is a little signal piece u clip to a spoke that passes next to a sensor on the fork that is wired to the speedometer readout on the handlebars... so the signal piece passes the sensor at a certain rate, and you get your speed
It tracks your speed using a sensor and a magnet that attaches to your spokes. Every time the magnet passes the sensor, it registers a set number of inches or centimeters that you have to calibrate depending on the circumference of your bike tire. It's pretty easy to calibrate using the manual because it will have a list of the most common tire ratings listed.
