When you're riding that you will run into what you're staring at?

I've never managed to do that - granted we're talking electric scooters and cart things. But I've managed to pull a few wheelies with the things! Taylor Dunn 36volt with "full power switch" that bypasses throttle controller and basically connects battery directly to motor! If someone is riding on the back seat and loads it the v belt (4L!!!) will squeal on the pulley!

When I first learned to ride, the instructors told us to look where we wanted to go as we turned rather than straight ahead.

You generally go the direction you're looking, though how much the body follows the eyes varies from person to person. It's not just bikes either, I first heard about it when skiiing.

It's a tendency not a fact of life. You can force yourself NOT to go into the spot you are looking at.

However, it's a little easier to remind yourself to look for the way you hope to go, then you will find it easier to maintain that target then to focus on not hitting something else, etc.

Yep, especially when you first start out, you really notice how much you go where you look. First time on motorcycle, kept that in mind and went exactly were I looked, even when I chose to look straight down. Same holds true when I first started biking (pedal) again a few weeks back. Now, I'm at the point where I go where I want. Maybe I'm still going/looking subconsciously, but I can be looking right and go left now. However, when the sh!t hits the fan, I do go back to roots and "look"...and bank hard on the steering...

What dman said is true - the issue is that a lot of crashes occur b/c of target fixation, you see something distracting and it drives you off an otherwise safe line b/c your focus is on it and not where you should be going.

That and they don't know how to counter steer.

yeap.

wich is why i tell every new rider to take a rider safety course. And experienced riders should take a refresher

As has been said, it's a general tendency. Most of the time, unless you are consciously working against it, you will slowly drift in the direction that you're looking. For some people it is more pronounced than others.

For example, my father is absolutely terrible about this and it affects him even when he's driving a car. I have many, many childhood memories of dad saying something like, "Hey, look at that kids, there's a herd of deer in that field over there." and mom's almost immediate reaction of "Watch the road!" as we too started drifting towards the field.

Thankfully I don't take after my father in that regard.

It's a natural tendency for everyone. Your eyes identify a target of interest and your feet follow. Any vehicle is an extension of your feet in that it provides locomotion. It's not a bad thing in itself once you no longer have to concentrate on how the MC operates. You look and you go. You just have to not look at that herd of deer too long

You can see it every time you drive. Watch cars as they approach an intersection. If the driver is planning to turn, they will drift to the side as they approach.

Did you read any of the replys? I linked that exact page.

No I did not, I only scanned them.

Once caught in the trap of target fixation, nearing the point of no return, one needs to fully understand and use countersteering to avoid being roadkill. Google Video of countersteering...it should be the first hit Devine soldier.
