I am seeing Sacramento, CA to Los Angeles - $182 and higher. for Aug 15-16.
You should look at priceline and see if you can get this price via american airlines.

My bad, I should have been more specific. Yes it is $182 to LAX but $280 to Ontario. I find the $100 difference more than worth it since I only live about 15 mins from Ontario AP.

I don't really think it's that. They all seem to have 1 or 2 layovers. I would think that for a business trip you'll want to get to your destination as quickly as possible. The $1100 has a stop in Seattle for almost 3 hrs. Nice if you want to see city but what can you reasonably do in 3 hrs?

that is the issue with the itineraries at the bottom of a search list. They are more expensive sometimes if the flights are closed to sold out or if they have weird routing like Sacramento to Seattle and finally to Los Angles with limited flights. There is almost nobody who is going to be buying this itinerary.

so my company is sending me to chicago for the last week of july and they told me i have to use the company travel website which is a new policy. Im looking at flights and HOLY BALLS!! talk about price gouging.

United flight #682
Company travel site price is $684.20
Expedia $465.20

If i pick the $684.20 flight, a popup appears saying i selected a higher priced flight and i have to explain why and it will list the cheaper flights.

the cheaper flights depart at 5:30am, United flight #1710
Company website $507.20
Expedia $312 .20

WTF?

Well with my company travel person booking tickets, they're refundable up to 3 hours before flight time. What's expedia's policy?

I calculated it out and I've spent over 60k of the company's money in the past 2 years on business trips O_O

Or maybe the accusations about "capacity discipline" have merit!

I've put up over 650K air miles in the last 8.5 years and for most of that time just about every flight has been full or nearly full. Purposelessly limiting the number of seats by limiting the number of flights and/or using smaller planes guarantees that there will be fewer available seats and the airlines can charge more per seat. Of course, in order for this to work ALL the major airlines need to be playing the same game.

I can confirm this. 75k per year flyer, platinum on delta. West coast, no flights past 1 pm. Why no flights from LAX to JFK between 1:30 and 4 pm PST? Seems like it would be a popular time, but nope. It's easier to sell out the shit red eyes for $700 a seat without that time slot being filled. Same thing in SFO. Forget it if you try to fly out of OAK.

2 direct a day, JFK to PHX. Easily enough volume for 4 or 5 a day on that route.

Nothing direct to Texas, ever.

Everything though ATL or Detroit. Why would I fly to Detroit to go to Memphis, TN?

Note that most of the uber low priced flights are no-frills flights. I buy them too, but they do have disadvantages, such as (but not limited to):

1. Reduced points accumulation.
2. Limited options for itinerary changes, or else higher cost for flight itinerary changes. (Many expensive flights allow changes for no extra cost.)
3. No pre-booking of seats, unless you pay an extra fee.
4. No free checked baggage.
5. No options to upgrade to business class.
6. No priority check-in.
7. No access to lounges.
8. No refunds, or only very partial refunds.
Etc.

Such flights are often quite problematic for business travellers.

Delta miles have been worthless long before today.

Had great success with United though, only 90k miles for 2 RT tickets to Hawaii.

Need 30k more miles on my emirates account for that first class to Dubai upgrade ^_^
