Greetings,

I went to the apple website and saw they are selling a quad desktop. I am like damn that is so ridiculous and there based model for the quad comes out to be $3300 and that is with 512 of ram and 250 drive. I would say if you went and bought this system you would probably want a min of 2 gigs and reality you will probably be buying 4 gigs or more. Probably one more hard drive, your easily spending over $4000.

Than if you are buying this system your probably making a good chunk of change from this system. So you basically got the money.

Damn i want one too....

Dude, shush! Do you really want to buy RAM (and HDs to some degree) at Apple's crazy prices?

Mac OS 10.3 barely used 4GB of ram. I mean honestly Tiger should be able to use 8GB of ram easily. When I worked for Microsoft VPC for Mac support I got quite a few people with 8gb of ram on G5s.

If you're in the industry where they use these kinds of machine for digital content creation, $3-4K isn't so bad.

buy a duel core 4800+ and 2 7800s in SLI mode, with 4GIGS of RAM, it would still be cheaper.

Dual Opteron 280's (dual core chips), SLI capable board of your choice, 16GB RAM, nV Quadro FX 4500 x2 (SLI) running on dual 30" displays (5120 x 1600 desktop), LSI 320-2E with 256MB Cache w/ 6 147GB 15K MAU drives. That should get folks needing a real workstation started.

There are 8 way oppy boards too and of course the price starts going way up. Of course back in the day where the term "workstation" meant SGI, $100k+ was the norm for a higher end setup.

BUT would it run Final Cut Pro?

No but Premiere will fly on it.

Bottom line is sadly the only thing that's keeping Apple afloat these days is the iPod.

1. It's Dual.
2. The Apple machine has FOUR cores, not 2.

2xOpteron 275 (2.2GHz) = $2160
SLI mobo = $416
4x1GB RAM = $520
2x7800GTX = $860
= ~$4000

Then add cost of case, HDD etc etc.
Sure, it's a LOT better than the G5, but that's not the point, you can't get close to the Apple price of the basic G5 quad buying all those things.
Although if you added 4GB RAM to the G5 you'd probably get close.

I think it's actually the plethora of applications that are Apple-only, particularly the aforementioned Final Cut Pro. They cost a "little" more than the average iPod

you can get a 2x Duel core Opteron 265 for 709 at newegg

so that would drop the price down to by 700 bucks...

Duel 2x Opteron 265 = 1400
4 GB RAM = 500
2 x 7800 = 860

~3000

Motherboard, Case, Harddrive, Optical Drives, Power Supply Etc ~ 1000

~4000

The apple is 3300 with 512 mb ram and a 6600..

That would be one kick@ass gaming machine for sure.

It depends on how comparable 1.8GHz Opterons are to the 2.5GHz G5 proc. Just because you can get cheaper ones doesn't mean the systems are more equivelant.
I don't know how they compare, so I thought the 2.2GHz Opteron would be "fairer" as it's pretty close without having the price premium of being bleeding edge. You could drop it down some more, and save even more by getting plain 7800GT's, but then how fair is the comparison?

Their quarterly earnings show otherwise. A statement was issued about this with the latest introduction to the ipod family. Check out their SEC report.
