Yeah, that's to be expected on mowers in your price range.

You might not be able to get away from it.

If you can, get a mower with a Vanguard Briggs engine.

If not, just make sure you change the oil every season and keep the air filter clean, and it should last a decade easy.

Are there ones with Hondas? I bet the thing would last until 2030 if he got one with a honda on it

Bah. Until we ran it without oil (always check the oil first thing in the spring) out '78 Simplicity with an old 16 HP single-cylinder Briggs just kept going and going and going. My grandfather had an old Bolens Husky from the 1960's that still runs perfectly (Kohler engine). Kohler makes arguably the best small engines, they definitely have a better reputation than the low-end Briggs, but the higher end Briggs (Vanguard and IC) are as good as anything out there.

I would strongly recommend a Simplicity. They make good mowers. We've used nothing else and had great luck.

Snapper rear engined riders are cheap and sturdy. You can get them as fancy as you want. From B&S, Honda and Kohler engines, and 28" to 33" decks, and 38" on the hydrostatic driven units.

See if you can buy a used one. You can still get parts for 30 year old units if you care to. That's what's nice about Snapper. They keep repair parts available for more than a couple years.
