I'm looking to buy a new riding lawn mower/tractor for about $1500. Any suggestions?

What are your thoughts on Cub Cadets, Husqvarna, and Troy Builts?

Thanks in advanced.

Roger back a few centuries ago worked in repairing landscaping machines or something and I recall him dissing a bunch of manufacturers, but troy built i think was one of the ones he recommended! Cub Cadet sounds silly Troy built sounds MANLY!

Haha. Yeah but I'd rather be cutting grass on a silly sounding machine than be taking my manly sounding mower to the shop.

Yeah I don't think I will buy a Murray or John Deere (expensive)

I got a older john deere tractor. i think its about 14 years old. it still runns great!

My in-laws bought a Sears model (craftsmen i think) that had trouble from day one. Where my father has a Murray that has lasted 7 years with no problems.

Yeah, that's to be expected on mowers in your price range.

You might not be able to get away from it.

If you can, get a mower with a Vanguard Briggs engine.

If not, just make sure you change the oil every season and keep the air filter clean, and it should last a decade easy.

Are there ones with Hondas? I bet the thing would last until 2030 if he got one with a honda on it

john deeres are nice.
the engines in them are very nice.

kohler makes decent engines, but i dont think they are the best.

honda, briggs & stratton, are both reliable engines.

Kohler engines are on par and perhaps even a notch above Honda. They are high quality.

Kohler and Honda are both going to be a lot more reliable than a low end Briggs.

Doesen't John Deer use Briggs? heh

Honestly, anything that you get should last 10 years. You just don't use a lawnmower enough to put huge ammounts of wear and tear on it, unless you have a few acres to mow or use it commercially.

Just keep the oil changed, the Briggs engine will be fine.

The only reason I always recommend Honda is because I always am in that mentality of "Get the best, regardless of price".

We have a Cub Cadet. We were considering a Deere, but the Cub Cadets were built better (not just riveted together.) Hint for you if you choose a Cub Cadet: Lowe's will take a 10% off coupon on it (even if it's a Home Depot coupon.)

Check out review sites and equipment message boards to compare them before you buy.

Oh, and we got the Kawasaki engine model, not the Kohler model. I don't exactly remember why, would have to ask my spouse since it was a year ago.

Kawasaki makes good engines, also.

Briggs is pretty much bottom of the barrel, at least their low end models. You get what you pay for.

Toro makes the best mowers. Their XL series are good from what I hear, and they use either vanguard for gasoline or kubota for diesel. I use their really high end stuff, and don't have much experience with their home riding mowers, but if they're anything like their push mowers or pro stuff, then they're excellent. See if you can find one of those around.

Briggs Intek engines are top of the line.

I should've differentiated more between their lines. They're big on differentiating between low end entry market and premium high end commercial market.

The Intek is about 3/4 of the way up the list towards "high end". It has cast-iron cylinder sleeves, full pressure lubrication, large lower bearing, and a dual-element air filter.

Like I said, If you can.. find a mower with a Vanguard engine, they are their top of the line models, and should be on par with Honda, Kohler and Kawasaki.
