I love Alien and have a creative mancrush on Michael Fassbender so I am looking forward to this one as well.

I'm looking forward to Prometheus.

I don't think I can take Chris Pine as Kirk in another movie.

Heh, funny I was just thinking after watching that "Captains" documentary with Shatner where he interviewed all the past Captains and even included Chris Pine how I kind of really wish they made Chris Hemsworth Kirk instead of such a small part.

Just a better actor and not so annoying IMO.

That said, I'll still watching any follow up Star Trek as it was pretty damn good.

Back on topic though, I cannot wait to see the movie but think I'll have to wait till it's out on Blu-ray. I doubt I can convince my wife to go see this one in the theaters, but maybe...

Watched The Avengers last night at the theaters and they showed the Prometheus trailer. I came. Everything looks and feels better on the big screen!

My god yes...

The trailer in 3d was amazing. I'm going to make sure I see it opening weekend in the fancy digital 3D theater.

I'm considering a purchase of IMAX 3D tickets for the midnight release.

Very excited that I'll be seeing it as the director intended (with an R rating). I hope all my friends will watch it with me.

I never buy the art books but I found myself pre-ordering the "Official Prometheus Companion Art Book".

Anyone read anything about the plotline for this? Heard one reviewer calling it an alien preview and just wondered how true that was.

It's the same director as Alien and it's no secret that it's in the same universe. It's a prequel, even though the director (Ridley Scott) initially tried to down-play the relationship, I think he initially hoped it would be a surprise.

Unless I'm being misdirected, I think the trailers spoil too much. To me, it seems obvious that...

[*]The space jockey race was carrying human-adapted xenomorphs to Earth as a weapon. This explains why they are so well-adapted to human physiology.

[*]The "derelict spacecraft" found in Alien is the one we see crashing in the trailer.

[*]The Prometheus crew does not live to warn mankind of the xenomorph threat.

Just purchased my ticket for an IMAX 3D showing at 12:01AM on Fri June 8. Anticipation is driving me crazy.

The night before last, I re-watched Alien: Director's Cut on Blu-Ray. Then I watched Aliens: Director's Cut on Blu-Ray last night. Both movies are great in their own ways. I am extremely relieved and happy that Ridley wasn't forced to release a PG-13 cut. Many of the elements that made Alien great couldn't be included in a PG-13 movie.

I also re-watched the theatrical trailer for Alien (1979) and noticed more similarities to the Prometheus trailer. I knew the title appears in a similar way, but it also has the same escalating mechanical scream/shriek sound...and it's very effective. It's impressive that, back then, Ridley and crew made something that is still just as effective 33 years later. Also impressive that they had the idea to go back to the old trailer and reference it in this way. Brilliant.

I'm conflicted about recommending that anyone watch the Prometheus trailers. They are amazing, but they all contain what I believe the be MASSIVE spoilers for anyone that watched Alien. I'm also slightly concerned that they seem to have a bit of Avatar style mixed in there (not a fan of James Cameron's Avatar). Still, I think Ridley knows what he's doing.

If you're going to watch them, I recommend watching these back-to-back:

If you're excited about this movie, I suggest you install / tolerate QuickTime and watch all of the content here:
http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/fox/prometheus/
It's probably the only place to find most of the content in high-quality.

Are there any other movies in this "universe" or is it just the alien series? if so, whats the proper order to watch? Ive only seen the original alien, not any of the others.

Rewatch the original. Nothing else is required. Aliens is also a great movie in a different way, but it was a different director (James Cameron) and I don't know if anything in that movie is canon in Ridley Scott's universe. A great action movie, regardless.

DO NOT watch these in anticipation of Prometheus:
  • Alien3 (horrible movie, and definitely not canon in Ridley Scott's universe)
  • Alien Resurrection (not canon, also not very good)
  • AvP series / Predators (not canon, I haven't heard good things about any of these).

Honestly...if you've never watched any of the alien movies, I would say just wait and watch Prometheus, then Alien. It would be a completely different experience I'm sure.

I will say that if Prometheus does happen to suck, don't let that deter you from watching Alien or Aliens. They are both amazing movies.

There are two sci-fi horror films that I would consider the absolute best of their genre. To this day, nothing else released since has even come close. Alien and The Thing.

Aliens, I would say, is James Cameron best movie. Sorry T2, Titanic and Avatar. It's not quite the horror movie of its predecessor but what an action masterpiece filming it was. If you want to see a film with great SFX without the overuse of CGI, this is it. This is James Cameron at the top of his game. When the hanger door opened and Ripley coming out with the fork loader mech to save the day, my jaw dropped.

Without going on any further, Prometheus has a lot to live up to considering the two predecessors mentioned. I just know it can't live up to the hype. It just needs to be decent.

After having my heart repeatedly ripped out and stomped on by George Lucas, I'm very reluctant to get my hopes up about this.

But I'll definitely be seeing it.

I totally understand that feeling. However, I don't think this can possibly be a complete screw-up like the Star Wars prequels. Ridley Scott has continued to produce excellent movies long after Alien and he has always been enthusiastic about science fiction; a genre which he has helped to define in cinema with Alien and Blade Runner. He's a talented, proven, accomplished director. George Lucas' early success was some kind of fluke.

Am I being trolled here?

Yeah. I gathered she was pissed. I was just wondering if there was any other reason I had missed in the last 4,345 times I've seen this movie.

MotionMan
Getting ready to watch Prometheus, OP?

Ichinisan
No - Aliens was on TV this morning. And, I have no interest in Prometheus.

MotionMan
Serious?

Ichinisan
Serious. Why should I be interested in it?

MotionMan
If you don't get why you should want to watch prometheus then you have no appreciation for film.

HAL9000
Are you that much of a sucker for commercials?

MotionMan
You're the one who seems to be influenced by the trailer and you probably thought it was something like Avatar. I hope not!

For the record (if you're actually serious), Prometheus is a prequel to Alien, by the same director (Ridley Scott); who hasn't done sci-fi since he helped to redefine it with the original Alien and Blade Runner.

I don't think I've ever been hyped for a movie like I'm hyped for this.

I still don't get why they showed Prometheus crashing into the alien ship, and dropping it back to the ground in the trailer.

That kind of gives a little too much away in the trailer.
