Found this pic, but I got this awhile back. Fun little rifle to mess around with and a lot cheaper to shoot than the real thing.

This thread has actually motivated me to get off my butt and find a nice .22!

While I agree 100% with the M&P 22 suggestion, I am not sure what "military grade" is. That is a term made up by gun-grabbers to scare the soccer moms.

My Mini-14 and AR-15 shoot the same ammo, and will kill you the same, but the Mini-14 is not a Scary Black Rifle, so it does not get the same attention from lawmakers, the media, or in fairness the people who I take to the range who aren't 2A enthusiasts.

Not Scary:

Scary:

Save it, you are preaching to the choir. Guess you've missed a few of my posts in the past. No worries.

What I was referring to was the added lethality of military ammunition in the context of safety with youngins. The significant difference in velocity and projectile weight/design between 5.56 and .22LR should be evident enough for me not to have to explain it, but in case your attention to detail includes ammo stats, allow me. Military grade ball ammo = roughly 3000ft per second and designed to induce hydrostatic shock in soft tissue and spall. Feel free to point me towards a .22LR round that does the equivalent.

Btw, you should really try to reign in your sensitivity concerning assault rifles. I made no critical or fearful remarks of any type of assault rifle, nor did I mention anything as being "scary," yet you automagically assumed I was party to the black rifle fear brigade. Please do both of us a favor and save your disapproval for the threads and posts that warrant it.

Thanks.

It wasn't directed at you, as I know you did not use the term in the Dianne Feinstein/Obama/Schumer context, my bad if it seemed that way.

That is just one of my pet peeves and I went off on a side-rant that has nothing to do with this thread.

Assault rifle is another made-up term, but I know what you mean

A .22 is the best firearm for a kid. If you want something you'll shoot to, or your kid will still like when he's older, then get a nice one. The CZ line of .22s are really great looking.

There are just too many benefits to a .22 not to get one. Low noise and recoil will keep a kid from developing a flinch. Also the cost of ammo lets you shoot it all day long without breaking the bank.

I gotcha, and thanks, but I think I really should have used ammunition after military grade, not weapons. That was my bad the more I think about it.

I'd say of many pet peeves one could have, that's certainly one that is appropriate given how many people judge rifles by appearance and not by function, specs, common sense, etc.

Yeah, you'll never find me echoing any of Feinstein's sentiments, or wishing her anything but a much needed retirement. Possibly a pine cone extraction for her ass, but I'm iffy on that one really.

Quite so. The versatility and value there is almost unmatched. Use them to teach, use them to hunt (or at least, take care of pests/varmints), use them to train, and when/if you have the means, spending some time with a suppressed .22 and a couple BX-25s loaded with subsonic is about as much fun as you can have with your clothes on.

Also, if you've ever had to deal with invading squirrels, mice or bats that seem to know what traps do, get you some mini shot loads in .22 and take'em out! You can take care of business and not worry about destroying your nice cedar tongue-and-groove paneling, the miniscule balls just disappear into wood. I've greased a few rats and a squirrel indoors before with that stuff, and found it quite effective (although traps are always my first option).

I'll second...or third...or whatever number we're up to now...the nomination for the 10/22.

My 8 year old daughter loves it, almost as much as my 43 year old ass does!

Solid platform.

Bolt-action .22 is my vote.

One round in the gun at a time, loaded by the parent. And it doesn't get loaded until the child is in his shooting position. The only thing the boy has to do is aim and fire. And he has my undivided attention the entire time.
Call me a cranky old man, but I'm all about range safety when it comes to a kids first gun.
They make a single shot magazine for the 10/22. I could maybe be talked into that.

I've been wanting to get a Ruger American .22lr myself as it's basically a bolt action 10/22. The American uses the same magazine as the 10/22. It's gotten great reviews. Boyd's is even making replacement wood stocks for them if you don't like the plastic black stock.

There is no wrong way to ensure range safety, so

Personally, if I didnt trust my child with 30 rounds, then I wouldnt trust him with 1.

A .22LR is what you want to learn. Its cheap enough that you can have frequent long sessions at the range. Picking a slightly larger caliber just because its 'cooler' is a dumb move. Once they have acquire basic marksmanship skills and you want to move to long range shooting you can think about another caliber. The money you'll save on ammo alone will pay for the .22LR rifle several times over by the time you really need to swap. Also .22lr can be fired at many indoor ranges where larger rifle calibers are banned. Distance to retrieve targets are usually shorter too so less downtime. Get a bolt action as well. It will encourage them aiming every shot rather than just spraying until the magazine is empty.

I shoot a Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22 with my daughter. She now wants a .22.

It's an AR15 platform in .22 cal, hence the name.

BTW they now come in ugly colors like orange or purple.

Yeah, they've been getting really high praise. I was thinking of getting a CZ 455, but the Ruger is getting such high marks I may just save some money and go that route. If I can get a thumbhole stock for the American it'd be perfect.

Teach them to enjoy history and get a gun that's low recoil. 30 carbine isn't the cheapest round, but an M1 Carbine sure as hell is fun.

Ya, but I just realized the "Compliant" means 10 rounds (and cost more). There are a ton of dealers in my area. This may be the gun I get.

If your in Leland Yee's district, I hear he can hook you up with a missile launcher.
