Well, said friend is being a PITA. I built him a refurb-PC-based gaming rig, that he's happy with, that cost me like $400 in parts, and I'm selling it to him for $350. So, I told him initially, that I'd take $50/mo towards it, but he said, "nah man, I'll give you $50/wk, now that I got a new job". So, he HAS BEEN giving me $50/wk, which is good, so I sort of counted on that, and this weekend, he said, "sorry, no dice, no money for you this week, going BF shopping with my kids". (Well, paraphrased.)

Arg.

So, now I'm having second thoughts about building him a PC for his eldest daughter. Would you? I'm at least going to refuse to do it until he finishes paying me back for the PC I built for him.

But if he's going to be a PITA with me over that, will he be a PITA, and want to return the gaming PC for his eldest daughter, if I build it, if some game doesn't run "perfectly" on it? Even if he signs off on the parts?

Maybe I should just point them towards a pre-built, wash my hands of it, and charge a small "finders fee" for picking it out for them?
You aren't a bank. No payment plans.

Not on the new bespoke PC, definitely not. He's buying the parts, as far as I'm concerned. I'm not even going to handle the money on that one.

Anyways, I was wondering, I've got this slightly-used gaming rig, that has a Z170 ASRock Pro4 board in it, 2x8GB DDR4-2400, a 240GB SSD, and Windows 10 Home activated. Thinking maybe I could compromise slightly, get an i7-7700K, use one of my MasterLiquid Lite units, add a 4TB HDD (new, shucked from an external, Seagate desktop DM HDD), and then get a video card to suit, maybe a GTX1070ti? I mean, is that too outdated for a gaming PC these days? i7-7700K, 16GB DDR4-2400, GTX1070ti, 240GB SSD and 4TB HDD? It would maybe save some money, since I've already got the basic parts, and get it built faster? (Ok, it would get that rig out of my hair.) It's in a RaidMax Cobra case, Titanium Grey color, I think it looks cool, it looks kinda Transformers-ish, but this is for a female, so I don't know if they go for things like that. I did see a purple case recently with a tempered-glass side, so maybe that would be a better choice.

Stop accepting payment plans from poor people. Not sure what you can say to him after he makes a ridiculous excuse like going BF shopping, but you really need to get out of the handouts business.

That rig is hardly outdated for gaming, especially if you add a 1070Ti to it.

Not a bad deal, but you would have to add an SSD and reinstall windows. I don't buy into the optane caching stuff...

Yeah, that's why I think my idea, even with a GTX1070ti and a 4TB HDD and 240GB SSD, rather than a 1070 and a 2TB w/Optane, if I could do that for $1400-1600, would be better.

Yes over all it is a much better system. More storage, SSD boot, and keep in mind the 1070 Ti will be faster, it's closer to the 1080. Also, it likely will allow for OC, not sure about whatever mobo they have in the ibuypower.

i7-7700K $289.99 right now, wonder if that's a CyberMonday deal, or if that will last longer (price reduction, due to CFL?)

Edit: Various 1070ti cards, from $450 to $500, and a LC one for $535 or so. Interesting.

Seagate BarraCuda 4TB Desktop drive $89.99 (reg. $120.99)

Edit: This is starting to come together pretty well. I'll bounce the idea off of my friend, of using some of my base components, and have him buy an i7-7700K and GTX1070ti.

In my country they came down in price around when Coffee launched, the new price is pretty much in line with 280 dollars(non-sale price), since for most pc parts i can just multiply the price in dollars by 10 to get my local price. I definitely think it should stabilize under 300 dollars in the US, that would be very sensible. Can't tell for sure of course.

That should be perfectly fine for quite a while.

How do people feel about an i5-7600K (on sale right now for $199.99, with a promo code dropping it to $184.99), and an RX 580 8GB card ($259.99 with a $30 rebate)?

The way he tells me is, she already has a "decent" gaming laptop ($1200? $1500?) laptop that her Mom or Grandmother bought her last year, so I think he wants something "better" to show them up. So no, a rig with a 1050ti's not going to do it.

Is there any particular better site with a CFL 6-core, or Ryzen 5 1600X or better, with a GTX1070 or better, for $1200-1500?

She's got a perfectly good laptop, her Dad is just pissing money up the wall to try and one-up his family, and you're enabling him when he hasn't even finished paying you for the last PC? Larry, stop. Just don't build this PC. She can live without it, and you can live without the hassle.

Better off with an i5 8400 at that price. I thought she preferred nVidia for GPUs?

I have to agree. The best thing OP's friend could do is simply buy a 27" 1440p monitor and a nice KBM for his daughter to enhance her gaming experience. And then save the rest of his money to build her a new computer a few years from now.

I agree with the others, this is the best option.

You lasted two hours. Just stop Larry. Find your "buddy" deals on a big monitor and gaming keyboard for the kid like whm1974 suggests.

1. GPU should be the largest budget in the machine.
2. SSD should be about the same as as the cpu.
3. No less then 4cores, however 6 to 8 is probably ideal for those games which are multi threaded.
4. If its for a girl it has to be pink... ( sarcasm )

1. GPU is the main driving force in a gaming rig period. Unless ur running a slow as hell cpu where the gpu is getting bottle neck, this is where most of your frame rates will come out.
2. If budget is an issue, i would say go intel and use Optane... (yes i am gonna get flamed for this but here is my reason)
Optane will allow you to use a mechanical HDD with SSD cacheing. True it wont be as fast as going straight SSD, however u can go past that 2TB storage cap without breaking 500 dollars on just that with decent fast IO.

https://www.gamespot.com/articles/intel-optane-memory-review/1100-6449530/

Also games these days are insane in size...
Destiny 2 = 68GB..
ME:A = 55GB

Infact almost any AAA title game will run you anywhere from 50-75GB....
Now factor if u gave that poor girl a 256gb SSD... unless she plays minecraft 24/7 and nothing but minecraft and some DOTA.... well, the SSD is no good....

A lot of games i have played reciently seem to use either 1 core... or 4.... and then there were some that used 6 and more....
But not that many...

But of course if u decide to go the intel route, you will probably pay for it, considering i would recommend no less then an i5-8400
paired with a Z370 board.

Larry what is the exact budget on said game machine?
Unlike Consoles, there is a very big difference between a sub 1000 dollar gaming machine, and a 1500 dollar one..... and i do mean very big differences....

1) I'm not her dad, and
2) Consoles are for "dirty, filthy, peasants"...

Edit: And

3) I think that she already has all the current consoles.
Does she have the one x? You can easily shame all the self proclaimed pc master race who have $800 and sub rig with this.

$499 at WalMart for Black Friday. If you're the type that doesn't mind braving WalMart on Black Friday, I'd say that's a much better deal considering the $200 price difference.
I did end up snagging one of these, in Dec. They were still avail. So much for a BF special. (Didn't sell very well, that's for sure.)

Anyways, to the naysayers, well, you were right. Friend paid me something towards the PC I built him before, last night, and told me, that he won't be getting his eldest daughter a PC like he planned earlier / she wanted. Apparently, she wants an XBox One (X?) now. She already has PS4. Sigh.

I also offered him the HP Power Gaming PC that I picked up at WM, for basically the price I paid plus the 240GB SSD I threw in, but he wasn't that interested. I think that it would make a decent 1080P gaming PC for her, although, his woman squawks at anything that isn't "factory new", and doesn't carry an "extended warranty".

(I would have given them the receipt, and there was no "tamper proof / evident" sticker on the back, so I presume the warranty is retained, even if upgraded.)
