Hi all,

So, it's been awhile since I've put a system together, and even then it was a fairly basic machine.
I'm looking to build a video editing/audio production rig (I know, the two don't exactly go hand-in-hand together), but am not up-to-date with all of the most recent developments in hardware, and lack the requisite technical knowledge to achieve more advanced functionality, such as overclocking the components and integrating a sophisticated cooling system.

Any and all tips, advice, assistance, etc. would be greatly appreciated!
Here's what I'm working with so far (I should note that I'm on a fairly tight budget, so any referrals to good deals on recommended components would be doubly awesome):

Case:
Antec Solo Mid Tower Case
or
Ultra Wizard Mid Tower Case

Power Supply:
Ultra V Series 500W Power Supply

Motherboard:
BIOSTAR TForce965PT LGA 775 Intel P965 Express ATX

Processor:
Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 Conroe 1.86GHz 2M shared L2 Cache LGA 775

Memory:
Kingston 1GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) (x2)

Sound Card:
Diamond Xtreme Sound 7.1 24 Bit Dolby EX Sound Card - XS71
and
Creative E-MU 0404

Obviously, I've got a long way to go...help!!!

Why don't you rethink that power supply choice?

I'm not going to recommend one because it's such a hot button topic leading to arguments, but I think the old saying, "You get what you pay for" tends to be more or less true.

I've never heard of "Ultra V" and it could be some new brand trying to buy its way into the marketplace, putting it's own label on hardware actually made by some other good company. I once got a lowball price on a good Channel Well psu being sold under the XCLIO brand that way.

But I'd sure look carefully & skeptically at that psu before you buy.
Also, Biostar's web site may have a list of recommended psu's for the mobo. If so, then buy one off their list.

Thanks for the tips - I'm re-thinking the case and power supply.

Any recommendations?

I think the video card is up next...

I have that PSU and it's been working great for about 15-16 months. The brand is Ultra, the same people who make cases and HSFs and some other computer parts. I've been running a FX-55 and an X1800XT and 2 hard drives and 3 DVD burners on it for some time now and it's worked like a champ. The only thing I don't like about it is the modular cables - they're really stiff and hard to work with.

Thanks for the tips, everyone - I've been swamped with other projects, but I'm back to working on the rig.

Any thoughts on video card options?

I've ordered the Raptor hard drives, and will be looking at power supply options tonight.
