Right after you close BF2.....everything goes slow

I'm assuming this is because of the fact that the game has to unload from memory, but what the hell? It takes a full 1-2 minute(s) for it to do this. Opening the start menu immediately after closing causes it to crash for some time.

It might also be from extra programs running in the background. Before you run a large game like BF2 it is usually recommended that you close out of all programs using the task manager first. And it doesn't hurt to run a spyware check.

UT2004 did the same thing when everyone had 512MB of RAM. When they bumped up to 1GB everything was fine.

I believe you have encountered the need for more RAM. Lots of BF2 players have upgraded to 2GB of RAM for this reason.

RAM so helps out with that issue.

With 1 GB in UT2k4, closing the game or alt tabbing takes a bit of time.

I just jumped to 2 GBs, & now closing the game or alt tabbing is smooth like silk

what else are you running in the back and also what does you peak ram usage show becuase i am not having the problem, sure the game might take 15-20seconds to unload, but not even close to 2mins, and our hardware is very similiar.

He might have a crapload of background tasks running as has been mentioned.

Start > Run > msconfig > uncheck everything in there except stuff you want like firewall, etc.

No spyware, and I've already done msconfig and unchecked everything.

Like you said, it takes 15-20 seconds for me to DO something....but 1-2 minutes (depending on how much stuff I open) for me to be able to do that task as fast as I usually do.

Ah well, I guess I do need ram. I was running the game fine at 1024x768 with mostly high and some medium settings with 2xAA and I was going fine

After you close down bf2 check task manager for a ~e5.0001 process and end it. Happens to me sometimes when I close bf2 and my computer slows to a crawl until I terminate it. I assume it's something to do with the cd check?

I'm running the demo though. But I'll give it a try next time I play BF2. I've got a few more problems to take care of with my computer now (random restarts when opening MBM5)

how many processes do you peeps have running and how much ram is being used when idle? mine is 43 processes which includes oe and firefox(which i do shut down to game) but usually have ase running (and i can alt-tab back and forth and the screen changes within 5 sec) and i am sitting at 253MB ram usage. when i game ram usage goes to 960MB, but due to my graphics card i run at 800x600 4AA. when i get my x800xtpe and run at 1280x960(or whatever it is in bf2) 4AA and have stuff up to where i can have a average of ~50+fps i may have problems with the amount of ram.

Have you upgraded to 1.02 yet?
because ver. 1.01 has a memory leak problem which cause the computer to run slow after quiting it.

If you already has 1.02. It probably that you have a very slow harddrive. How often do you defrag?

I'm on 1.02 actually.

Well after calming down a bit I did realize that it took 15-20 seconds for it to close down properly.... I guess I'm so used to things loading so quickly that it seemed like a long time.

Even with 2gb I still have to wait quite a while for the memory to be completely dumped. Probably either BF2's or Window's crappy memory management.

Woah it's been quite some time sinve I've defragged (about a month)... I completely forgot about that. I'll get started soon... it takes me at least 4-5 hours to defrag. Hell it takes a full 3-4 minutes to do ScanDisk anyways. I guess my Diamondmax 9 w/ 2MB buffer isn't that great.

I always have a E5 or something like that open when I close BF2. I just end it manually and everything is fine.

They fixed the memory leak with the latest patch. This should no longer be an issue. I bet closing BF2 from the tasks list will aleviate (sp.?) any performance problems as well.

I never shut down programs and usually have 10 or more running including iTunes, Firefox with a few tabs, p2p applications (though not downloading), and AIM. I've got 1GB of RAM, an AMD64, and a GeForce 6800 GT. Game runs fine with lots of visuals turned up. When I get back to my desktop, things are fine... possibly a little slower and a little hotter, but otherwise just fine.
