Right click on any folder - and sharing is not an option?

Hi folks,

I'm a newbie to networking. I'm starting a network with 3 computers all running Win XP. I've set up file sharing on all 3. On my laptop, I'm able to access all the shared folders on my network.

The problem is I'm unable to share any files on my laptop. When I right click on any folder the "sharing" option is nowhere to be seen.

Any ideas what I need to do to share a folder on the laptop?

Thanks in advance.

Psst... I think you meant "uncheck"

Ok, made some progress,

by checking "use simple file sharing" I now see "sharing" as an option when I right click on a folder. Yah!

However, the "share this folder on the network" box is grayed out. I've tried several different folders on different partitions with the same result. Boo!

What now?

thanks again

Nope, definitely check.

Here I googled a link. http://www.petri.co.il/enable_simple_file_sharing_in_windows_xp.htm

Quoted from that page "If the option to share the folder isn?t available, look at the bottom of the Sharing tab. Does it say that remote connections to this computer are disabled until you run the Network Setup Wizard? If you haven?t you must do so before you can share the folder."

Cheers mate

At the bottom of the sharing tab it states: "Windows firewall is configured to allow files to be shared with other computers . . . "

I've already run the wizard, so that isn't the issue?

FYI I am logged on as a system administrator.

Any other suggestions?

That's not true, never share your whole drive.

The difference between Pro an Home is that Pro allows you to use authentication and persmissions whereas Home doesn't.

Yeah, it makes no difference if it is a whole drive or not. The boxes are grayed out.

File sharing is on, I ran the wizard, I'm the only administrative user, and it still won't let me.

Please help!

I'm getting close to reformatting, so if anyone has a clue to fix this issue, I'd be grateful!

You still here? I'll figure out how to do it from the console for you... hang on...

OK, open a console (Start --> Run --> type 'cmd' --> press enter), and do:

net share sharename=driveath

replacing 'sharename', 'drive', and 'path' with your data, like:

'net share SharedGames=c:\Games'

Ok, tried that and get the following message:

"System error 1058 has occured.

The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enable devices associated with it."

Thoughts?

What's the source on the event? You can run the event at eventid.net but I didn't get any useable hits on the event number. Which means even with the source it probably won't help there but it's worth a shot adding the source in the event query.

Sounds like your server service isn't running.
