So, if a white person uses the N-word in a non-deragatory manner (which is apparently how black people often use it with each other), you think that society thinks that is OK?
MotionMan
Do you at least understand that saying the word in that context would be less offensive than if it were used as an insult? Not that it would be acceptable or anything but extremely uncomfortable...It does get used like that, but I'm sure only with friends. Yes, context matters...
Society? Everyone thinks differently about each and every occurrence. You have to be specific about what you mean by non-derogatory as well. Calling your friend "my awesome dude" in a friendly manner still qualifies as derogatory in the same way that saying "your such a i love you" to your gay friend does. Just because you use a word in a friendly way doesn't magically make all the negative connotations of the word disappear. What I understand about the use of the word is irrelevant.
Do you believe that society treats the use of the N-word by a white person differently if it is used in a non-derogatory context versus a derogatory context?
MotionMan
It is not banned in our society - It is widely accepted by large portions of our society as a perfectly valid way to refer to others.
Only certain sub-set of people are not allowed to say it.

Wrong.Bolded part: But only if you are white, right?
Wrong. If a white person uses the N-word in ANY CONTEXT, it is considered derogatory.
Wrong. If a black person uses the N-word in MOST CONTEXTS, it is not considered derogatory.
Right?
Wrong.
Wrong.
Wrong.
It could qualify, yes.1. So, a black person calling a black friend "my awesome dude" in a friendly manner qualifies as derogatory?
When discussing its usage, for one.2. What is a context where a white person can use the N-word where it is not considered derogatory?
It could qualify, yes.

So you think it would be OK to type it into this thread? If so, please do.
Some black people view the word as derogatory even when used by other black people in a friendly manner. How would it qualify?
I've typed the word into these forums enough to know that it is automatically filtered. So you think it would be OK to type it into this thread? If so, please do.
Not off the top of my head, no. The word is explicitly derogatory as far as I am concerned, and as such, there are very few ways for it to be used in a non-derogatory manner, by anyone. Can you name any others?
MotionMan
Except black people take offense when white people use it in any context. So....

Acceptable? I don't get to decide what is acceptable. My personal opinion is that it isn't justifiable. I understand the rationale but I don't think it is effective or productive. Just mental masturbation. There are some people that feel they are not being racist when they differentiate different types of black people as N-words and just regular black people. These people also are consistent across all races. They differentiate between white trash and white -- spics and hispanics -- chinks and chinese - kikes and jews -- sandN-words and middle eastern. and lastly, island n-words and any island folk.
Do you think that this is an acceptable way to use racial slurs? When someone is acting in a way that reflects poorly on their race, you insert the slur, when someone is a productive member of society, you refrain.
Not true. Take two examples white standup comics using n-word.

Does that play work for you in your professional life? :hmm:The exception that proves the rule.

In other words, bet against the Eagles whenever the opposing team has a black cornerback. You can almost guarantee that in every game he plays this season, the defense is going to know.Cooper, 25, has 46 catches for 679 yards and five touchdowns in 40 career games. He is expected to assume a larger role in the Eagles' offense this year after the season-ending injury to Jeremy Maclin.
