Rim is behind in the consumer market, but they've never really been aimed at that market. They're still the absolute best email/communication/minor productivity device in a corporate setting.
I think their big failure was going half-assed at the consumer market, rushing in with the Storm (which was awful), then under-spec'ing the Storm 2 (which wasn't 'awful', but can't run OS6, so is completely obsolete).
That has cost them a lot of gravy money from the consumer side, and a lot of those folks (like the ones who bought the storm) will never be back. If they had waited six months after Storm, and just launched with Storm 2 (with more memory), they would have lost a lot less marketshare.
I've got a curve ATM, and OS6 fixed most of the things wrong with it. It looks like there's a non-slider, physical keyboard model with a vga touch screen coming shortly. That would give touch-resizing, and swiping for tabs, threads, etc. To me, that would be the perfect device.
I'm dirty all day at work, and touch-screen typing isn't going to cut it; a keyboard I can wrap up and still use.
Interesting that Rim is talking about pushing BBM out to other platforms; it kind of fits their real business model (selling service, not devices). Just about anyone who has used it would tack a buck or two onto their monthly bill to have that instead of SMS. It's ridiculously better.
