With the new OS update allowing you to sideload pretty much any Android app I think I'm finally going to jump on the Z30 myself...haters bring it on:twisted:

The OS update that was just pushed by most US carriers made Android apps run much faster than the leak I was on. I can say that much. Runs Netflix just fine 9on my Z10) which is important.

The big problem is still any app that needs Google services. In "wanted features" articles this is always on top of the list. Google services doesn't work but there are tricks to get it working. So, with some messing around you can get things like Google maps and Ingress working.

When you get your Z30, just sideload an app called Snap and use Snap to download free apps directly from the Google app store. I think I read that if you buy an app via Google Play (on a web site or Android device), that Snap will then allow you to download that app.

Truth be told, there is only one app that I want (the Disney World app with wait times). I DLed that and it works. The other big app that people want native is Netflix. Well, as previously mentioned, it runs just fine!

I also love Pandora. There is an app for BB10 called Apollo that is a Pandora front end which works great.

If you have questions, PM me.

If you are like me, you are ultimately going to end up hating Android. It is a hobbled together OS that is different anywhere you look. Took me 10 minutes to figure out that I can't easily kill apps on my sons Kindle (when I had an app die on me but not shut down). Then I had to install an app that can kill open apps. Glad that my stupid Z10 does things like this out of the box.

Oh, todays news since this thread got bumped.

BBRY got their rebate of $700m early this year. That's always nice. Also, it was stated that Lenova had a buyout offer on the table but the Canadian government blocked it.

Thanks for the tips, my new phone will arrive in two days:awe:

I honestly don't see myself downloading many apps other than shit for my kids to play with, well other than Tango so I can video chat with them when I'm traveling for work, otherwise there's nothing I can think of I really need. Funny that Google maps works just fine on my old BB Torch but not on the newer BB without messing around...

And since nobody mentioned the great 2013 market share news...

http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2014/...alls-below-others/?_php=true&_type=blogs&_r=0

Even though smartphone shipments rose 39 percent in 2013 compared with the year before, exceeding one billion units for the first time, BlackBerry shipments fell 41 percent.

BlackBerry’s tumble meant it ended last year with just 0.6 percent of the market, even less than the 0.7 percent attributed to operating systems so inconsequential that IDC lumps them together in a collective category.

Last year, 52 percent of the BlackBerrys shipped ran BlackBerry 7 compared with 46 percent for the new phones.

That, IDC noted, was not the results “the company had hoped for when it released BB10 in January.”
0 percent market share and shrinking.

I can't say I see this as a loss. I've been seeing them get the boot for a while now in the smaller organizations I support. Out of all the clients I support only two still have BES and in both cases it's because a couple of VIP's refuse to get rid of their Blackberry. The rest of the employees are just using Android and (mostly) iOS devices.

From a user standpoint, ActiveSync on Android and iOS works just fine. They get their emails and their calendars, they don't have to call in with issues all the time, and they can use whatever device they want.

From an IT perspective, I don't have to waste time and resources running a BES box and I don't have to train people how to use the BES interface (which leaves a lot to be desired). The client doesn't have to waste money running a BES box. I can remote wipe the device just fine which in most cases is all they want, but if it's not there's 3rd party applications (such as GOOD Mobile) to take care of that.

They also won this patent infringement case against Typo.

http://www.businessweek.com/news/20...s-judge-typo-copied-keyboard-in-iphone-case-1

I have one here in the office and the keyboard is damn nice. I'd say it's even better than the original from blackberry.

The Typo?

I checked a few reviews out of curiosity and didn't see very positive things written. That was pre-release or just after release though.

Friday is results day for BBRY... Then Q<whatever> results start in a few weeks!

I have a Q10 on AT&T and am still waiting for the update to the new OS. It also pisses me off that it deletes my txts after a month and why can I only listen to Visual Voice Mail from the Hub?? If I select it from the VM tab under the phone screen it calls the number?

I think BB10 is a great OS, but the lack of support is making me regret switching away from android.

The crazy thing about RIM is that if they had played their hand right...they could have been bigger than WhatsApp.

Much bigger.

you switched from droid to BB?

Yup. I went from Windows Mobile (or whatever it was called) to Blackberry OS 5/6 to Android 3.X/4.0 to Blackberry 10.

Funny you posted that pic, because I forgot my new BB Q10 on a table at a busy bar for 10 minutes and it was still there when I went back to get it. That was the one time I was glad I got a BB.

Android has it's problems, but it's getting more and more polished as time goes on. BB10 just doesn't have the support and the resources to make me happy. If I didn't care about google apps or being able to deposit check with my phone then the Q10 is a great phone. But I NEED the google ecosystem to make my life easy.

The thing that pisses me off the most though is that they were originally promoting that the OS can be updated immediately because they separated the cell stack from the OS, so it doesn't need to go through all of the Cell provider testing before release. That and the nostalgia for the awesome keyboard is what really sold me on the Q10. The updates didn't come on ATT and today's large format phones reduce the advantage of the physical keyboard.

I didn't realize that you already ordered it. You're going to love it. I'll let you know that it takes about a week to get used to the gestures though. Once you get used to them, you'll be shocked at how quick and efficient it is to do anything. And the keyboard is insane ;-)

BBM on Android and iOS don't do video chat yet but it is coming.

Google maps is definitely better than the BB10 maps app. The BB10 maps app has gotten much better since launch but it is not as forgiving as Google maps. Searching for misspelled restaurant names is a big issue on BB10. Type Pzza Hot Orlndo, Florida and Google will get you what you want. BB10 would most likely give you zero results. I've also have had problems with BB10 maps not searching around my current location. I could type in Pizza Hut and it will give me a bunch of Pizza Huts that are 500 miles away. Luckily this is a 1% issue for me. I don't travel much and when I do, I have a Garmin and sat/nav in my car.

Oh, Google maps ... the web page works fine .... I just want to make sure that we are talking about the Google maps app.

I literally ordered it just after my first post saying I was going to I don't use BBM but I'll setup Tango since that's what my wife already uses. And yes I was referring to the app, I have it loaded on my Torch right now...rarely ever use it since I have a TomTom I use when traveling but it's a good backup, forgot my TomTom on a trip to Georgia last year and it worked great...and the BB maps have never been impressive. I am looking forward to my new phone, now my kids can play with my old one all they want

Damn this thing is pretty sweet, the size is still taking some getting used to being so much bigger than my Torch but I like the view:awe: Getting used to the keyboard and gestures already and I have to say they are very efficient, my wife is envious and getting less pleased with her 5s by the minute Too bad she's stuck with an iPhone being the only compatible device for the Nav system in her Chevy Equinox

I already have Snap sideloaded and have begun installing stuff from the Play store, couldn't be any easier and having two+ app stores to choose from is incredible...it's really too bad that this could be the last phone they put out, had this been available a couple years ago they wouldn't be in trouble now:\

"only compatible device for the Nav system in her Chevy Equinox" - really? Why does it need a phone connection for Nav?

Today, Chen said they have 3 high end devices planned for the next 18 months. Sounds like atleast one is a QWERTY.

I don't view more phones as an if but a when.

Glad you like the Z30. I can't wait to upgrade my Z10 to the Z30 or it's successor. Rumor is that the Snapdragon 800 is coming to the next phone (which I think will be a QWERTY). But I hope another fullscreen is around the corner. BTW, my wife has a Z30 and she loves it. I almost got her the Galaxy S4. it was a real debate. But she doesn't play games. She talks, takes pictures and videos and uses e-mail mostly. I took her needs and got her the phone that best fit her needs. Turned out to be the best decision ever.

Should have been more specific, only phone that interfaces with the DVD/Nav entertainment system, she had a Note 3 for a short time and it wouldn't even read the music, the iPhone has full controls on the touchscreen and she uses it a lot...so the Note went back and I got her the 5s

I sure hope they keep making them, wish this thing still supported holstering profiles for alerts but I'll get used to it, at least you can still set it to lock on holster. And it's funny but the S4 was my 2nd choice too, kept putting it off and when I finally saw the update to support Android apps it was the little push that put me over the top, and I don't regret it in the least.

And I have to add that the picture/number unlock screen option is bad ass!

I saw a demo if the number unlock screen thing. Thought it was interesting but am content with the current unlocking method.

After a week, let us know your thoughts. I'm sure some gripes will eventually come up.

The biggest problem I have is with maps, when I actually use it. The search functionality needs a lot of work. Granted they seem to be constantly improving it.

My sentiments (and wife's) exactly.

Snap! + Blackberry World is great. If I could just get the DirecTV GenieGo app to work on my Z10, it would be great.

My wife got a Nexus 4 in the big sell-off last summer and increasingly I keep catching her playing with my Z10. She'll drop little comments like, "Your phone is so much nicer than mine" and "It's so smooth". I get a warm, fuzzy feeling cuz apparently Ihatemyjob, Corwin, she and myself are the only 4 people on planet earth that know this secret. I keep offering to switch phones but she keeps saying "No, that's OK". Then I'm like "Damn" cuz my plan is to follow it up in a couple of weeks with "You're right, your Nexus 4 does suck" and then replace it with a Z30.

I just set up Snap on my wife's Q10. I put it on my Z10 after I received the last update. It sure helps fill that void when the app isn't made for Blackberry 10.

My biggest gripe about BBRY is Miracast. And it is not BBRY's fault.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miracast

The Z30 supports this technology (sorry, z10 owners are out of luck). Not sure if the Qxx series supports it.

This whole Chromecast tech does nothing but lock people into closed standards. Just give me a TV that supports Miracast and I can stream Netflix from my phone or any device that supports Miracast. I don't undersand what is so great about Chromecast. It does what my phone (the I already paid for) already does.

Sadly, all the Miracast/HDMI adapters are not well done and buggy. I keep saying that BBRY needs to bring a Miracast adapter to market. I'd get one in a heartbeat.

I had the previous leak of the BB10 OS that was prior to the Verizon update. I can say that the leak had a debug version of the Android software running. The Verizon update runs Android apps like butter.

Chromcast is great exactly because you don't have to carea about micracast support.

Every TV these days has HDMI and most people have Wifi and that's all you need.

No matter how good somethig is, if you don't actually have it, who the hell cares? You don't have a miracast TV, that automatically makes miracast completely useless on your phone.

Also I don't really understand the point about closed standards. Miracast is a closed standard too.

At least chromecast has an SDK that allowed anyone to mess with it.

There are benefits to both, and both can be achieved by using a dongle in an HDMI port (no your TV does NOT have to support it natively) so what's the issue? Chromecast only works with select apps and doesn't support protected content, Miracast duplicates your display to the screen without any limitations about which app is being used or what is being shown. Of course IHMJ mentioned that the dongles are buggy, but that could just be with some of them, not sure how many he's tested but I'm starting to look around and hoping to find some that are recommended to work well with my Z30...
