Shocker of all shockers. Blackberry actually made money last quarter, beating investor expectations of a loss.
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/kitch...terly-profit-despite-lower-revenues-1.3011698

Of course that's the good news. Here's the bad.
But despite the slight profit, the smartphone and software company saw it's revenues drop 33 per cent to $660 million. A year ago, the figure was $976 million. Wall Street was looking for $833.1 million this quarter.

So their profit was due to cutting out expenses than actually selling more.

Ya, Chen wanted to get the financial house in order as a primary goal. Goal set. Goal achieved. Actually, that was achieved 2 quarters ago and 2 quarters ahead of schedule. Going forward, BBRY is going to be more focused on growth initiatives.

I do like how he is structuring the company. They are basically decentralizing and pushing responsibility down the chain as far as possible. If one group makes a sound argument to make an Android phone (for example), the BB10 group has no say in the decision.

who is buying a blackberry, I haven't seen 1 person with one. Activesync has replaced blackberry enterprise at a lot of places. I can't even believe they has 600+ in revenue.

You haven't been looking in the right places...I have a Z30 and love it. And Activesync may work great for simply delivering email, but BB Enterprise now offers full mobile device management for BB, Android and iOS devices, I am close to convincing my company to pick it up and get rid of the shit we are using now that only works on iOS, sometimes, would at least give us the option of any phone we want to use

The reason you don't get it is that you think the revenues come from hardware.

Chen has publicly stated that they are not looking at what people want today or tomorrow for growth. He is looking 5 years out. Thus the focus on healthcare and M2M and the combination of both. meanwhile, Apple gave us a watch.

---------------------
I have the Z10. My wife the Z30. I want the Passport but am avoiding it because I am a runner and can't imagine that thing in my arm band, granted there are other options.

The slider that is coming soon looks awesome. I just hope they don't cheap out on the processor.

The Z30 is slick. Probably the best phone to get from them right now.

I feel sorry for people that are non gamers that can only think in terms of iOS and Android ecosystems.

-----------------------
I don't know where it stands but BES 12 is going to be a service provided by some carriers in some countries to small business users. No need for your companies IT department to manage it anymore. Just use the BES 12 "cloud" solution.

You don't need to feel sorry for them. They are perfectly fine with the devices they chose. Blackberry is not some top secret phone company that is being hidden away from the masses. They used to own the industry and people have chosen not to buy an inferior product. They didn't keep up with the industry and are now paying the cost through market share as seen from their lower revenue year after year.

You can continue to hawk them on here all you want, but don't accuse people of being ignorant and making the accusation that IOS and Android are only for gamers.

The majority of consumers are using their phones for personal reasons, not work related. You could give everyone a FREE blackberry and I'd be surprised to see how long they stick with it before reverting back to IOS or Android. It doesn't matter what phone company or features you think are best, that's irrelevant and only your opinion. Whats best doesn't always win or sell. IOS/Android have VASTLY smarter companies behind them and know what sells and how to sell.

That said, I personally do think they are both better ecosystems than blackberry.

People are ignorant though.

Angry bro?

Let's play stupid. Who would be a good candidate for a Blackberry (BB10 based) phone? You tell us that you think 0% of the population is ignorant on the pros and cons of BB10 vs iOS vs Android. So tell us why they decided on the phones they chose. If you think advertising and popularity are not the reason 99% of the time .... I feel sorry for you.

I've pretty well given up showing off BB10, or worrying what anyone thinks.

That said, you're quite wrong, particularly about current blackberry being an inferior product.

I really don't care what you use, but if your phone is more about communication than entertainment, I guarantee you have the wrong phone.

OP was from 2011 and predicted 18 months left before Blackberry died.

I used a BBOS phone from OS 4.X through OS 7.X. Did not get on board with OS 10.X because of the poor reviews and lack of fundamental features when the OS was released.

Now they're being promoted as business phones. I have my work email on my android device already. I don't need to carry two phones, one for personal, and one for business.

On a list of ways to make yourself popular with co-workers taking their iPhones away and sticking them with Blackberries is not on it. Be careful who you advertise your "wisdom" to, lest you get lynched by everybody else.
Who would be a good candidate for a Blackberry (BB10 based) phone?
The better question is who cares? As mentioned, RIM owned the market, they are not some secret unfounded technical lost ark.

Obviously most people care so little about the company they don't even post in this thread, so there are still a couple here who don't realize how irrelevant the company is now. I Just hope you don't own stock.

Your reading comprehension is severely lacking...to begin with I never said I would take them away, though I know dozens who are so sick of the iPhone it isn't funny and want an Android or BB, especially the ones who have seen mine. Email pretty much sucks on the iPhone, better than they used to be but they still suck compared to Blackberry. Second, I said BB Enterprise management software supports ALL PHONES, so everyone would be able to choose anything they want, Android, iOS or BB.

In a way they are, BB owned the market when it was almost exclusively used in business, which is what they kept marketing to. Apple took off so quick because they made a toy that appealed to the consumer market, then even business people started wanting to play instead of work on their phones. BB tried to stay focused on people who wanted to almost exclusively work, which was a bad idea. BB10 has addressed that concern, you can now get the excellent email experience and run damn near any Android app you want on their phones. The market demographics changed and they were slow (way slow) to change with it, but they are there now and if people starting taking a look at them again they would be pleasantly surprised.

Yup, pretty much this.

But people treat smartphone selection like religion. Nothing you can tell them that their OPINION is wrong. So your best off staying away.

we got this software because our old BB enterprise servers didn't support droid and IOS, MS. ive had it in production for just about 5 years. as of yesterday i have just about 700 devices on it and last week shut down our ancient ass blackberry server. we are officially done with them.

GOOD technology is pretty decent. i have it running on a little VM and have had zero issues with it. most of the time my exchange email shows up on my phone before it shows up in outlook.

I am not sure that would be kosher, trying to make a company buy blackberries so his 30 share odd lot position could go up.

I never denied advertising and popularity are part of their problem. It doesn't matter what the problems actually are, the fact is that RIM revenues keep falling off a cliff, you tell me why that is.

This is a RIM death watch thread, why don't you enlighten us as to why consumers shun their products and what RIM is going to do to change that? You do realize that there is a whole new generation of people who have no idea what a blackberry is and most of the ones who do know or had owned a blackberry before have now defected to competitors?

They couldn't keep the customers they had, what makes you think they will be able to draw new ones?

It's pretty sad when they have to essentially beg the FCC to force developers to create apps for your ecosystem -- http://www.zdnet.com/article/blackberry-wants-laws-to-force-app-developers-onto-bb10/

Stop "feeling sorry for people", they do not need your false sympathy.

IHateMyJob actually owns lots of stock, he's been hawking BBRY for at least 4 years on these forums. If you look back at his threads, you'll see he bought a bunch and kept saying he was going to buy more and more.

Don't worry, he'll throw up images of the last year and his gains anytime someone brings it up but will hold onto the losses from the past 4 years.

The sad thing is Blackberry is about to miss the second window too.

They missed the first window years ago, but if they would have started making Android phones in 2012-ish timeframe they might be a top OEM now. But soon these Chinese OEMs are going to strip the margin out of the Android market, so if they ever decide to switch gears it will be out of the frying pan and into the fire.

The moment your spend resources on Android compatibility, or your CEO begs the government for preferential regulation, is the moment when you should be able to look in the mirror and say "this OS is killing me."
