Sooner or later, a big company is going to buy RIM for its patents. It is just a matter of time. Their OS and hardware is shit, but some of their software and their patents would be a boon to other companies.

their hardware specs are shit.
the devices themselves are well made and put together.

but yeah, the OS is shit.

Apple is on that path. MobileMe locks/wipes the iphone.

Not to mention Good Mobile Messaging app works for all IOS and android devices. It doesn't encrypt the whole phone, just what is needed. Its much better for individual liable then a BB is.

There's a difference. People might brush off the latest Android handset from Pantech, because, well, no one cares about Pantech. It seems to hurt the fanboys deep in their soul when RIM does well, and it brings them a curious pleasure when they do poorly.

The latest android handset from Pantech is being sold in developing countries at prices that give RIM a run for their money.

I get no satisfaction from RIM going down the tubes, but I do enjoy saying I told you so.

I started this thread 3 months ago... I knew RIM was toast a year ago...

They have about 6 weeks left before they start making some pretty dramatic changes... Investors will have someone's head shortly...

RIM has about 6 weeks left in it's current form before someone makes a play for them. If it's a Chinese company, they're done, no one will use a device that the Chinese government has a back door into their encryption...

Every time a CEO pulls out his BB, he's going to be reminded how crappy the stock is doing, and move move and more corporations away from RIM products.

Also, the 500,000 Playbooks shipped is crap, they haven't sold near that many, RIM knows exactly how many have been sold, and they chose to give out the shipped number to cover the piss poor sales, and they haven't fessed up to the high return rate yet either...

It really was the reduced outlook that just kiled them, then poured the gasoline and burnrf the body before someone took a leak on it.

About $1.30 EPS this quarter to $0.70-$1.05 EPS expected next quarter. So phone sales are going down and now Playbook sales will probably suck. Ouch. Market cap is about $18 billion (? may not be updated). Give it a few more weeks or a quarter...

OK. I was all for giving RIM a shot as they are the only option for secure corporate email, BUT...

I just had a few open tickets closed after RIM didn't respond to my 3 opens cases for over a month. After getting them resolved with outside help and lots of time and effort on my part, they started sending me emails for each open case last week.

Thank you for contacting BlackBerry Technical Support. It has been a pleasure to work on this issue with you.

Our records indicate that you have an incident open with us that has not been resolved...

If we do not hear from you within the next 24 hours your Service Request will be closed.
Thanks for the help RIM. It's good to see the thousands upon thousands of dollars we pay for support going into that black hole called the playbook.

At this point I'm going to do a 180, say fuck security, fuck management, bring on the Android and IOS devices because RIM can suck it. Next major phone roll out for us in about 9 months time will NOT be blackberry devices. I'd rather give my staff pagers, and not the slick pagers with alphanumeric support and ability to reply with short answers, I mean old school '143' style pagers.

Bye bye BES. Don't let the door hit ya where your mama split ya.

My father bought a playbook against my advise. He actually still likes the thing a lot but god damn did they release that thing before it was finished being baked. I mean how can a company that built its reputation on corporate email release a device without ANY form of integrated email, contacts or calendar!? Sure it's a media consumption devise and not meant for corporate work but you are RIM!, and all the competing tablets have it. It's got lots of other bugs too. Thing is it actually has lots of potential. When it works right it is one of the smoothest and best looking tablets on the market.

I happened to meet some of the programmers who worked on the playbook at work the other day and even they admitted that it was released WAY to early.

I found this article to be quite an eye-opener: http://www.bgr.com/2011/07/13/rims-...l-of-the-company-that-made-smartphones-smart/

Here's a quote: “BlackBerry smartphones will never have cameras because the No. 1 customer of ours is the U.S. government,” Mike Lazaridis would say in meetings. “There will never be a BlackBerry with an MP3 player or camera.”

Ouch.

And with Android on Playbook being postponed, I don't think there's much wind in their sails...

So... making 2 separate models, one with camera and one without, wasn't an option? LULZ... This is what happens when you let MBA morons control the company.

9930 is actually/finally coming out next week on 8/10. I had to LOL when I read one site that said it will probably draw people over from other phones.

Should be nice to finally have a reasonably fast phone (i.e. not stupid slow) with touchscreen. The large keyboard is very welcome too. I'll probably get one for myself, maybe a few for the execs, but this is certainly the last new Blackberry we will see at this company. Next year they are out of here.

I only see these phones helping Blackberry by giving people who are locked into BB either via their company or own addiction a viable upgrade phone. I don't see these phones swaying people upgrading to a smartphone for the first time or people who are at the end of an Android / iOS contract.

This guy is a co-founder of the company and afaik never got an MBA. Just a BS in egineering with an honorary doctorate.

That said, from the articles I have read, he is a stubborn ass who doesnt see where the market is going and has gone.

you want to try again?

In 1979, he enrolled at the University of Waterloo in electrical engineering with an option in computer science. In 1984, Lazaridis responded to a request for proposal from General Motors to develop a network computer control display system.[4] GM awarded him a $500,000 contract. He dropped out of university that year, just two months before he was scheduled to graduate.

60K? Try 300K for a month. McKinsey and such will send in a relatively small "team" for something like 300K a month.

Well it was a throwaway joke, i obviously didn't look up what his specific background was, but RIM sounds exactly how it worked when I was at IBM (and sounds earily similar to what i heard about the American car manufacturers). Google, facebook, and apple... RIM is not.
