Just got my new work 9900. Still setting it up and getting used to it, but it is pretty sweet so far.

Also, some interesting marketshare stats came out today from Nielsen

BB is down 1% in installed base market share to 19%, but what is interesting is the poll on user types. 11% of "innovators" say their next device is going to be a BlackBerry, which is more than in any other user type category. Could be they are becoming more popular with the techy crowd again. 11% isn't great, but the trend looks okay for them.

That's interesting but the "not sure" gets bigger as you go from innovators to late a adopters. I would bet that a high percentage of not sures are current blackberry users which ends up giving funny results.

They could also be feature phone owners as there are still a lot of them out there. The poll was on people who are likely to get a smartphone next.

Activist Fund Jaguar Calls for Breakup of BlackBerry Maker RIM

It is unclear how many RIM shares Jaguar owns. The firm is relatively small, with reported net income of $2.1 million for the second quarter of 2011, and RIM, with a market value of about $15.8 billion, is by far its largest target to date.

"This decline in the company's standing can largely be attributed to significant execution delays, inadequate mobile applications and the lack of a competitive product that addresses the needs of the consumer marketplace," the letter from Jaguar said.

In a letter to the board, Vic Albioni, head of the merchant bank Jaguar Financial, criticized RIM's lack of innovation and challenged its governance structure, in the latest complaint from investors taking the company to task for its poor performance.

"The status quo is not acceptable, the company cannot sit still," Mr. Alboini, chairman and chief executive of Jaguar, said in a statement. "It is time for transformational change. The directors need to seize the reins to maximize shareholder value before more market value is lost."

3 months ago, RIMM forecast sales of 800-900k Playbooks for this quarter.

Analysts surveyed recently expected 490k.

Reality? 200k units shipped. Ouch. Staples must have a ton sitting in their warehouses too, they recently sent out $200 off coupons for the Playbook, on top of the $50 price reduction and $100 rebate for current BB owners.

Google should have saved their money and bought RIM instead. I'm sure they have much more useful patents than Motorola and having a BBM type messenger built in would be pretty nice for Android.

I think Motorola was the better purchase. The Droid and Droid II are some of the best Android based phones. Remember Google is competing against Apple. One big advantage Apple has hands down is control of the entire production line top to bottom from hardware to software. This allow them to make all the calls. Up till now Google only had the nexus and nexus one which were good phones but didn't have the weight behind them that a company like Motorola can give them. Now they can start looking at producing Android phones that make no real compromises.

RIM's stock price is 50% of what it was when I started this thread...

Even the die hard BB users I know are defecting now.

Their latest earnings report only contains 3 weeks of Bold 9900 sales. I agree it doesn't look pretty, but the next earnings report will undoubtedly be better.

That statement normally would make me cringe, but in this case it's probably RIMs only hope.

I wrote a free (and rather basic) Twitter app for the PlayBook called Lemma a while ago, and have been contacted by no less than three RIM employees for my feedback on the development experience. That's encouraging - developers need to be wooed in order for the platform to survive.

The whole HTML5 mobile app thing is going to explode real soon. The PlayBook doesn't run HTML5 apps very smoothly, and I'm not sure it's capable of doing so. But you bet your ass that the iPad 3 will do it very, very well, and that will usher in a whole new era of mobile development. Most companies have web developers on staff, not mobile guys - and HTML5 allows web guys to cross the threshold. The battle for RIM will be won or lost on those grounds.

No disrespect intended, but I seriously doubt that.

The Playbook won't sell unless they nearly give it away, corporations have gone along with the "bring your own phone/mobile device" idea and are adding iOS/Android devices to their mix, and I don't know a soul that wants a new BB.

The iPhone on Sprint, Verizon and AT&T is going to be massive, and Android is killing the competition.

Look for RIM to slip into the single digits marketshare territory for the next quarter.

I think BB still has strong support amongst the corporate business suit world. Though even this market they are losing fast.
