Strange to see this thread, I was curious the other day.

Similar to IBM. RIM/BB are doing IT consulting now.

So do they still make phones? I heard they were the best on the market during their peak.

Their phones were always awful, it's just they were the first to market and nobody knew any better. Their mail and messaging management system is where they were innovators. That's what kept them afloat.

Well since I never used their phones or tablets I wouldn't know, so...

I don't think I want advice from RIM / Blackberry.

Way back I had a choice between a Treo and Blackberry and chose the Palm. I regretted that.

They have been every bit as "dead" as he or anyone else expected. This is the death we talked about. RIM / Blackberry is no longer relevant or significant or consequential. They're basically dead as far as consumers and most businesses are concerned. I mean, it's somewhat likely that a small piece of something would remain. I mean, the Atari company we knew is dead, but even the "Atari" name didn't ever go away completely.
Astoundingly enough they are still a multi billion dollar company!

Although that was from 2017.

Sad that Pliablemoose passed away. He was huge fan of r/WallStreetBets and would've loved what's happening now with WSB and BB stock.

1) Fact: Apple phones are mde by engineering students doing "internships". OK .... "forced internships". Want your degeree? Oh, you need to work in factory XYZ for160 hours ... in 2 weeks.

2) No one that is techy that I care about (IT department for company of 8000+ people in defense contracting) in my company ever talks to their phone. You actually serious?

oh shoot

i forgot just how stupid this thread was LOL

It's too bad really, BBs were actually pretty good. But Apples marketing just overtook them like fire in the end.

BB/RIM itself is not dead though, they are focusing more on car infotainment systems last I heard.

My shares did drop quite a bit since I bought them though but I'll HODL and see what happens.

Well... it didn't help that their first touch screen phones designed to complete with iPhone kinda sucked.

And, wow... they pivoted to car infotainment systems? Ouch. Sounds like Google and Apple will get to destroy them all over again with Android Auto and Apple Carplay.

Once opon a time, I owned a Blackberry 8300 for work and an iPhone 3G for home use. The iPhone felt like it was 5 years more advanced, even though it was only a year newer.

Blackberry's focus on office drones who just wanted to obsessionally check their e-mail every five minutes was probably their downfall. Apple made a much better device with mass market appeal.

I think the big thing too is lot of companies don't issue phones anymore, they expect people to use their personal. Before that, BES was a really good product and nobody else really has anything like that. The alternative is to setup pop3 accounts and redirect work mail to it, and it's kind of dirty as there is no central management. But it saves companies money so they don't care if it's a bigger pain for IT.
