It is well worth the money at full price. Unless you really cannot afford it or have too many great games to play, stick your hand in your wallet and buy.
It's still classed as an Alpha as the Dev is still adding content but each content update feels like it is done in a stable, near-bug free and coherent manner. As paperfist states some features do need to be balanced or fleshed out but in the meantime the modding community is pretty substantial with some solid additions to keep the game fresh.
No two starts are the same, even if some aspects are similar.
Because your number of colonists starts low you tend to get emotionally attached to them as individuals and their skills may be irreplaceable if they die.
