Thanks bubbadu! North Austin was out, but I went out to Cedar Park and they had 6 on the shelves. Another guy was buying one while I was there. Came up as $99.99 at the register, but the rep already knew about the $49.97 price so he adjusted it and out popped the rebate form. Free after rebate - INCREDIBLE! Thanks again dude!

Was searching Google and came across the following article:

Whole article

Exerpt:

With the Rio 600, Diamond introduces a unique backpack system that it plans to carry over to its future lines starting with the upcoming Rio 800. The purpose of the backpack is to free the player from being slave to any one particular memory format, several which are fighting each other now for market dominance.

You already have a collection of Smart Media flash memory from your Rio 300? Get the Smart Media backpack to use them. Have several CompactFlash cards for your digital camera? Get that backpack. There will soon be a backpack using IBM's diminutive Microdrive, which comes in 340MB and 1GB flavors.

So has anyone seen a Compact Flash Backpack?

Has anyone been able to track one of these down at any of the Los Angeles Best Buys?

Get outta town. The only backpacks I've seen are proprietary. Gonna check your link. When was it written?

None at the Charleston, SC BB. They laughed at me when I asked if there were any more. I figure if everybody working in the store gets one that wants one this week, they may put the rest on the shelves and if you happen to be there when this happens, you will be able to get one too

They tried that exact same crap with me. :| The shelf tag has no mention of $49 after rebate. Go back and raise cane!!!

here is Corpus Christi, Texas they rang up for 99$ - 50 $ rebate. is the deal dead? I'll have to go check it out for myself i guess though since my computer illiterate parents were the ones who went since this is for my 11 year old little brother...

This thing rocks... picked up the last one tonight in the FL KY store... Shelf tag clearly said 49.97 - 50.00 MIR FREE AFTER REBATE. nabbed it just before a couple of people, and to think I was going to pass up this deal earlier in the day when they had a dozen or so left.... nothing like cutting it close.

ALL the computers now think it's $99 - $50 rebate. You can only get this deal if your best buy still has the display tag that says $49.99 - $50 rebate = Free. Irving BB took the display tag down after I got one, saying the tag is a mistake.... BB on Central Expressway in Dallas didn't have the tag when I got there, so maybe they already took it down.
This might of been a 1 day only thing.

I went to the Torrance, CA BB (the one on PCH) around 11:30 am today. They had 2 but 1 had a red sticker on it like it had been returned. The shelf tag said $49.97 with no mention of a rebate. I got the unopened one. I asked the cashier if there was a rebate and he said that if there was it would print out. When the receipt printed out he said, "oh yeah, there is a rebate. $50!" I said, "Cool, I guess I get it for free." He replied, "How do they manage that?" and then I walked away.

How does the backpack thing work? Does it slip into the backpack like the Ipaqs do on their sleeve or something?

Funny, they pulled the tag after my purchase as well. You may be right. I think it may have been a mistake :Q .

However several have said the tag read "free after rebate".

There's been a posting on Anandtech before about how BB computers work when printing these display tags up. The computer just checks sale price, checks rebate availibility and price and prints the tag. If it's free, it prints a FREE tag.
I figure that the rebate was put into the computer first while the price was still $49.97 from last week, a bunch of tags got printed, and finally later on the computers got the updated $99.99 price.
notice .97 (special price) and .99 (regular price)

The best buy near me had an empty rack with the price marked as $49, the computer showed the same price for every store in the state. Employee said they may be getting another shipment, but who knows.

And I believe these use proprietary memory, not sure what it sells for or where to buy it.

Be advised that THE DEAL IS NOT NATION-WIDE.

Better call your local BB before you go there. I have been going to my 2 local BB's for 10 times so far, none
has the $49 tag, and all marked up as $99.

This is 9:27PM Central time of 2/12/2002.

Success!

I stopped by the Santa Clarita, CA Best Buy tonight and found what *may* be the last one at that store. First I checked the "Personal Portables" section in the Audio Department. They had some RIO players but no RIO 600s so I almost walked out.

Before giving up, I gave the Best Buy SKU number to a CSR (BB SKU 3914009) and they told me there should be seven units in stock. I was then told that some MP players are stocked in the *Computer* department. There I found one RIO 600 on the shelf. It was listed as "$49.97 - $50 Rebate = Free".

I picked that one up and didn't immediately see any of the other six that were supposed to be in stock. Perhaps other shoppers had already picked them up and had not checked out yet. Or maybe they were hidden on a nearby shelfs. That's a mystery.

When I went to check out, it did not ring up as $49.97 but something higher. So the Best Buy CSR and I walked over to see the actual shelf price tag. She took the tag and made a copy of it to justify the price adjustment in case there were questions. The $50 rebate was printed up automatically.

Thanks to bubbadu for this great deal!

Bob

Ok, I went to the Circuit City a block from my house and they had 5 of these things left, but they rang up at $99 and change. I then went to a Best Buy in Loz Feliz, just 20 minutes from Santa Clarita, and it rang up at $99 there as well. I went ahead and bought it just in case, and talked to their customer service rep, who then told me the $49.97 price was an error and that I was out of luck. So does anybody know definitively if it was an error or not? If not, how do I go about getting credited the $50. For free, it's a good deal. But for $50, I'd rather spend an extra $50 or so and get a Nomad II with 64 MB.

I'm starting to think that they made an error on the shelf tag. I didn't get my RIO 600 for $49.97 until the cashier checked the tag personally.

If this is the case, I imagine that there will be some sort of national alert out to pull the incorrect shelf tags.

BTW, the $50 rebate is good for purchases made between 2/10 and 2/16.
