hmmm I am very very confused. I just tried my new player and it seems to work just fine with regular MP3 files. I used ones that I downloaded from Napster and grokster and they transferred fine without being WMA. Why are you guys talking about WMA? Is there some sort of advantage to converting MP#'s into them?

Also I am disappointed. I thought I get 10 hours worth of music here but I got only like 8 songs-anyone tell me where I am going wrong?

BTW please don't laugh at me for these questions. I am relatively new to the music files playing.

A wma file @ 64kbps sounds as good as a mp3 file @ 128 kbps. So if you convert your mp3s to wmas you get twice the amount of music on your player.

I'm sure your thinking of the battery life in this player. It's rated @ 10 hours of play time.

MP3s play in this player just fine, of course. That's why it's an MP3 player As was said, it's better to use WMA because at 64kps they sound the same as 128kps MP3 file.

What I wanted to point out though was that this player is NOT good if you want to use higher capacity memory card. 128MB costs $200 :Q However, if you buy Rio One for $80 AR, you can buy a 128MB memory card for $50 making it a MUCH better investment compared to Rio 600. And it looks better to boot. I think I'll sell the one that I used and buy Rio One simply because it's cheaper when it's upgraded. 160MB for $120 (Rio One) vs. 128MB for $200 (Rio 600). The choice is clear.

Well that's certainly true. People are selling non-working RIO 600's on eBay for around $26. Maybe people are buying them for parts?

Oh, and if someone could tell me how to convert MP3 to WMA, I'd appreciate it. I have WMA 8.0, but can't find it anywhere. I can fit only four songs on the card and that's not much...

LukFilm, first, connect your Rio 600. Then, in WMP 8.0, go to Tools -> Options -> Copy Music , set the file format to Windows Media Audio and set it to 64 kbps. Also deselect Protect Content. Then go to Tools -> Options -> Devices, select Rio 600, Properties, and set it to 64 kbps.

When copying CDs, it will make the files 64 kbps .wma files. When sending a file to your Rio, it should convert it to 64 kpbs .wma.

I think that the free player and the 32MB backpack makes for an awesome setup. For $45 you have a 64MB portable mp3 player with a recharger that holds 2 hours + of music and plays for about 9 hours on a charge.

I just got one from my local BB here in Chicago. The store with the "49.97-50 = FREE" sticker was sold out... I drove 2 miles to the next BB, bought it for 99.99, went back to the first store and got a price adjustment. The clerk tried to pull the same "it's 49.97 AFTER rebate" with me, but since the sticker was still there, I was able to convince him otherwise. Also got the 2 yr replacement plan. It would be a pity if my unit stopped working in 1 yr and 364 days, hehehe.

Maybe to lay folks, but codec critics believe it's more like 96 kbps WMA ~ 128 kbps CBR MP3 (constant bitrate).

Also, converting MP3 to WMA is not necessarily good advice. In general, converting from one codec to another is discouraged because every codec has its strengths and weaknesses. A conversion simply ends up mixing the weaknesses of two codecs together into the final product.

If at all possible, rip the original CD and convert the track(s) to WMA if you need to. Of course, if you don't care about sound quality, and just want your music on a limited memory device, then you can ignore this advice.

I bought this at BB and submitted my rebate last week. I just checked the status of the rebate online (rebatestatus.com) and it says:

We have received your submission. We were unable to process your submission for the reasons indicated below.
The receipt you submitted is from a non-qualifying store.

What the heck is this? Anyone else who bought at BB have this problem?

xp1800, sorry to break this to you buddy, but you are looking at the Nike PSA Play rebate from a couple of months ago, not the Rio 600 one.

Bump for those who may have sent in BB rebates. It appears the rebate
company is rejecting all BB rebates.

They might reject all your rebates. But how did you know they will reject all BB rebates?

There's a thread on FW on this. It appears only BB rebates are being rejected.

Will BB honor the rebate if rebate gets denied by the company? And I don't understand this...I'm really new at this....if you qualify for the rebate (as stated on the rebate receipt) how can the company just deny you? Aren't they legally binded to that rebate...it is a contract (isn't it?)?

I don't see how BB can weasel out of it since the rebate ticket was printed at their store registers. I'm waiting for the rejection letter to arrive before heading over to BB. You can also try calling them at the 800 number on their rebate ticket.
