I found this free and very good program to convert mp3 files into wma files (Be sure to download the program AND the wma codec from the web site).

thanks Bubbadu for the deal..picked up 3 this afternoon in chicago. first went to the bb on north ave., but they were out, but had them call the bb out in la grange/hodgkins and they said there were ~ 30 in stock, so went over there and sure enough the tag said $49.97 - $50 rebate = free! these will make great gifts.

I got one today, but it's bad unit!!! everything looks new, USB download LCD and menu/volume key are fine. BUT non of the joy pad button works, ( of course I CHECK the HOLD lock is OFF). so I can't get all the menu and can't play a damn song! what's wrong? firmware 1.55 and Rio Audio Manager at 3.3.0.67

I need to return that P O S. Any advise?

I have a question about the rebate submission... The register printed 1) Cash receipt, 2) Rebate form, 3) Rebate receipt -- Best buy's website (as well as register printed rebate form) says to submit an original UPC, copy of your receipt and the rebate form. But do they also want this rebate receipt? It reminds me of OfficeMax's rebate receipt.

Keep the cash receipt and send the rebate receipt, that's why they print out a special rebate receipt.

A word of advice, converting any encoded format to a similar format will have disappointing results.

Esp. since most mp3 out in the wild are 128 kbps, which while acceptable, are not CD-quality.

The reason is that each codec has different strengths/weaknesses, and a conversion process simply brings the weaknesses in two codecs into the final audio product.

If your plan is to shove a decent hour of music in a 32 MB device, then I guess it doesn't really matter much either way.

Tried on XP, to convert mp3, you may use Plus! MP3 Audio Converter LE which was included in Windows Media Bonus Pack for Windows XP! that can be downloaded from Microsoft.

And on XP, you do not need to install any software for Rio 600.

To me, seems converting from 128 mp3 to 64 wma won't lose many quality. But 128 mp3 and 64 mp3 sure have big diff. Converting video files is another story.

Did the shelf tag list $49.97 as the price? Mine rang up as more than $49.97 ($99.99?) but the BB CSR corrected the price after looking at the shelf tag. So the key to this deal might be to find a BB that still has the "$49.97 - $50 Rebate = Free" shelf tag.

I think this is some type of pricing mistake and that Best Buy will be correcting this nationwide very soon, if not already.

No luck for me. I went to Springfield, PA and it was still marked for $49.97 but had none. Then, I went to Wilmington, DE, but they had it for $99.99. The guy immediately told me it was free after the rebate. However, I went to the register and it came up at $99.99. I went back to the guy and it turns out they changed the price yesterday. And, I had him call the store near Price's Corner and the price was $99.99 there too. oh well.

I went to my local BB this morning and, after looking in the computer, was told that indeed the price was $49.97, but they're sold out in every store in Texas.

St Louis area stores have it priced at at $99 w/ $50 rebate.
The store manager says that this was a "Market adjustment" that was good only from 2/10 - 2/12. He showed this to me in the computer system. Deal could be officially DEAD.

Why would they be broken--is that why BB was clearing out those rios?

Why would they be broken--

Well, several Rio 600s at BB are "open box" because they are defective in some way. I had to return my brand news ones twice and finally the third one I got worked. People selling them on eBay might be selling broken ones unless they bothered to test them, but then they are no longer "new".
