Roland Burris? I saw a clip of him blaming Bush.

I'm wondering what the administration will do now to reward their cronies back home? I mean, you can take a politician out of Chicago, but you can't take Chicago out of the politician.

Congrats Rio

and yes it was all Bush's fault.

I was watching CNBC while this was announced and they said one of the biggest factors was the infrastructure budget of Rio's bid was just so much larger than the other cities at ~8 billion i think. The IOC was also encouraged by the fact that Brazil has handled the global recession much better than any of the other bidding countries. That would put Rio to be in a better economic shape than the other cities to execute it. Brazil said it was in a good financial position before the global recession with like 200 billion in reserves.

Rio's huge infrastructure budget allowed the more emotional members of the IOC to dream up or think up of a more fantastic games. In fact, the IOC lost lots of marketing/advertising revenue from media companies bidding for rights since it wasn't in Chicago. I think the CNBC analysts were saying like an instant 15% reduction in media rights bids for the 2016 summer games because it was held in Rio.

Rio could really used an 8 billion injection for infrastructure. This could finally force the damned corrupt politicians to actually invest in the city instead of just patching things up.

I'll be very very VERY surprised if human society lasts long enough to see the Olympics in Rio.

What did you expect with Obama running around all over the world telling everyone how much our country sucks and all the mistakes we have made. Why would the IOC want the Olympics to be hosted by our sorry country? Oh thats right, they are just a bunch of racist pigs.

How is that $10/gal milk and $100/gal gasoline working out for you?

Should we take all of your statements as serious as those, or should we analyze each of your posts in a vacuum?

No, really. This sort of thing happens down there in Brazil. It even happened to high profile soccer players whose moms and other family members would be held for ransom.

Kidnappers Prey on Mothers of Brazil's Wealthy Soccer Stars.

Charlotte Mangin: Yes, kidnapping occurs around the world and is particularly a threat in Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Russia, the Philippines, and South Africa. It is of course happening in Iraq these days too, with journalists and politicians and judges major targets. In Brazil, wealthy businessmen and their families have traditionally been the main victims of kidnapping for large ransoms. The soccer stars have been targeted, as you mention, because of their fame and large salaries. But as upper class Brazilians increasingly hide behind gate homes and bodyguards, and commute in helicopters and armored cars, kidnappers in Sao Paulo have begun to prey on all social classes. Anyone who dresses nicely or drives a fancy car may be a potential target these days as "express" or "flash" kidnappings are increasingly common. Here, victims are driven to ATM bank machines and forced to withdraw the daily limit on their bank accounts. This can go on for days until the bank account is drained.

Apparently Mangin produced a PBS documentary called Ransom City, which I'm going to try to track down. So, the economic well being of other people in your country really is important for your own health, safety, and well-being.

Congrats Rio. Enjoy the spotlight and celebrate.

Chicago doesn't get picked and somehow it's Obama's fault? Geez, just because one's political party gets marginalized from committing political suicide doesn't mean that it's now necessary to castigate others out of spite and denial. I mean, we all know who's to blame don't we?

Interesting article I read in the paper this morning which makes you think about all of the wastefulness involved in the Olympics.

Thanks for that article. I was thinking a lot about the way the Olympics benefited Barcelona. If Rio uses that city's planning as a model, they will truly improve the lives of the Carioca.

And we can't have anything good happening while the democrats are in power right? Time to celebrate.

Yeah I guess I'm just misinterpreting all the conservatives cheering over the fact the US didn't get Obamalympics as Malkin called it. How should I think about this Waggy?

What the fuck is wrong w/ those people? They are glad America lost? Rush "Why would anyone give to Olympics to such a crappy place like America?"

They are happy all those construction jobs won't be going to Americans? All those tourists won't be coming to the US and spending money? WTF. Considering the unemployment rate, this would have been a huge boon just when its needed most.
Yeah, let's not have workers building, but stuck w/o no jobs collecting unemployment (or just go homeless if the wingnuts had their way.)

We see the right for what they are. The love to wave the flag, but they hate all the people behind it and revel in their failure and pain.

Congrats to Rio, I think it was their time. Brazil is up and coming and S.Am. has never had an olympics. Should be a helluva show.

I think if anything this shows the waning hegemony of the West. China, now Brazil.. won't be long before India puts in a bid. Not only that, its sounds like the USOC had their head up their ass.

Right on schedule.

Have the dollar go down as far as they say it will and you will see that $10 milk and gas soon enough. Can't wait eh?

Ding. Ding. Ding.

I guess Country First was really a meaningless campaign slogan from the GOP.

We just lost 8 more soldiers today. I'm sure the families can be consoled by the fact our President decided to spend his time on the olympics vs focusing on the troops. He really pisses me off in this area, it is like he considers the troops something to be bothered with rather than responsible for.

Oh please. Criticize his policies directly, but the notion that a president can do nothing but focus on the "important issues" is just silly.

Focus on it ? It is like he is annoyed at being asked to even talk about it.
