RIP Gamers, not even the 1080 Ti will save you now.

I also wonder if the manufacturers are beginning to spin down Pascal since Volta is around the corner. Add in the demand for mining and the market is in a chokehold.

And that's before you factor in the effect the memory cartel pricing of the GDDR/HBM have on the overall pricing model of GPUs.

The End is Nigh.

Not the end, but I believe many people who just want to game, will do so on a console.

Otherwise, until mining profits drop, or some other major event like Bitcoin being shut down in China, this is how it's going to be until then.

When mining took a dip in October/November, many miners here put their cards and rigs up for sale, and people could find in stock graphic cards near MSRP. So the demand rises and falls quickly based on how well mining is going.

That said, Nvidia and AMD will have to increase production somehow, because if every card that rolls out of a factory is immediately sold, it only makes sense for them to do so. At the same time, if they ramp up production and there is a mining dip where miners aren't buying them, they don't want the various retailers to have surplus stock where they have to offer some kind of discount/promotion.

I have to say that I've seen mining in the past make cards a little harder to find, and increase in price. I've never seen anything like this before. It's insanity when over-MSRP cards sell out in minutes.

INB4 the gamers of the nuclear afterscape have to scrape by on every 980 Ti they can find in the rubble of the miner's preemptive attack on castle 1080 (Ti).

EDIT:

Just checked ebay and 980 Ti is now 450 USD due to being the only thing left to purchase.

I still think we are a few months out.
Also brand new nvidia launch of a new generation isn't exactly a great recipe for availability anyways (especially since GV100 showed astronomical mining capability as a foreshadowing).

Well on the plus side the used market could end up being nice for buyers come summer.

Took the better part of a year of at or below price of electricity cost returns before people started dumping for previous crashes, and that was with uncertainty of prices constantly.

This current run-up is almost perfect wall street style melt-up, and with people investing far more in equipment, meaning you will have far more people running at a loss just to cover interest on loans.

Even if the price crashed right now and stayed crashed you wouldn't see a glut on the market enough to crash prices for 1 year at least.

Guess what's the #1 CPU at Amazon right now? The G3930.

It's probably because it's the only thing left in stock right now.

Places like Newegg, Amazon, B&H Photo are pretty much sold out of most current gen GPUs.

Well for some of us its a good thing. I sold my gtx1070 for a $100 profit and my old gtx960 4gb is going for $130 used on ebay. In the end, I will have gamed for a profit ($25) for the past year and a half.

I still see gtx980ti's for $325 used around the net. That's not a bad deal.
When Volta / Ampere releases I'll have my money ready, mabe I'll get one closer to MSRP before prices sky rocket.

These prices are absurd, there is no way I'm paying $1200 CAD for a 1080ti.

Just as PC gaming is reaching stability with older GPU's lasting longer and more options for consumers these miners are creating a massive barrier to entry.

AMD and NVIDIA need to try and do something because its going to kill the resurgent PC gaming market.

As someone who wants to mine, I share and completely understand your frustration! Sorry for taking the last GTX 1070 TI from Newegg the other day.

Seriously though how can the manufacturers/supply chain be oblivious to this mining thing, you'd think they could supply more to make up for the extra demand.

A lot of places don't even let you backorder, which is a pain, because if you could back order at least it would hopefully tell them they need to order more if a bunch of people have backorders.

I wonder if going through local places like Best Buy would be viable for this, even if it's items they may not normally stock they may be able to order via their suppliers, and in higher quantities.

Day 1 preorder is the only chance I see of getting any Volta/Ampere at launch, when you are competing with millions of miners.

If mining doesn't crash by then, they will be out of stock permanently.

The more total hash worth of cards they make per month, the faster that GPU mining hits break-even.

Nvidia is obviously trying to get as close to meeting supply as possibly without flooding the market, while AMD simply probably doesn't have the capacity available to make more than they already are.

I'll be standing out front of Microcenter the day of release.

I predict it will be nvidia.com pre-order as the last time you will ever see a Volta/Ampere in stock.

Launch day will probably be too late.

Especially since the third party vendors are perfectly OK with selling as many cards as they can to miners by the plane-load.

Nvidia first party sales of the 1070 Ti were the only reason why the third party cards were even remotely close to MSRP, and the moment that nvidia.com ran out of 1070 Ti the third party cards skyrocketed in price.

I predict when Nvidia releases Volta /AMpere they will have 1 million units stock piled so gamers and miners can get their hands on them, AMD should do the same.

GDDR6 availability might ruin that plan though.

No way in hell Nvidia could stockpile enough to hold back 2 years of pent up demand + infinite miner demand.

That's simply not a realistic expectation in any case.

Most of the 2017 was like this.2018 will be same or worse.Pc gaming is pretty much dead sice 2017.I think 95% of cards sells in 2017 was to miners anyway.Sooner or later even pc enthusiast will quit and then AMd/nv will have huge problem if mining crash in future.Because nobody will care about their cards by then.Everyone will be on console by then.

They need ramp up productions or bye bye pc gaming.
