It doesn't matter whether you have the money or not, you'd still be paying almost Titan level prices for a GTX 1070.

When the GTX 1070 and 1080 launched, many argued that they were overpriced because they are actually mid-range chips. There was some validity to that claim, but overall the performance was great for the $450 I paid for my GTX 1070 making it a worthwhile purchase in my opinion. $900+ for one is ridiculous though.

Have been a PC gamer for 40 years. I've seen prices fluctuate dramatically. This is hopefully a temporary situation. The only problem is that consoles compete with the PC for my dollars. I just picked up a PS4 star wars bundle. I will start accumulating games on the cheap. Once my current sig rig no longer can play the games I want, it might be console gaming from then on. The prices to build a decent gaming rig better come back down to earth within the next few years or this old timer is out.

I think it's time for the AIBs to sell direct to the consumer. An additional sales channel for the consumer to get around price gougers like Newegg and EBAY sellers would put them in check. No one would buy at inflated prices because the AIB could deliver faster. As for miners they could sell directly to miners that want to place orders of 3+ cards. Make them buy the headless mining version of the card.

I'm willing to bet that Nvida and AMD are already working on ways to cripple consumer cards for crypto-mining. I'm not really sure how they would go about it, but I would bet that they are working on it. They are going to pretty desperately want some market separation between gamers and miners. Sometime this year we will see Gaming GPUs and Mining GPUs with the gaming GPUs somehow crippled to make them less appealing to miners.

One of my best friends just did this, got a great deal on a Kaby i5 pre-built from MicroCenter for $899 with a 6GB 1060 in it already 16GB DDR4 and a 128 GB SSD. I couldn't custom build him a system for anywhere close to that because of the ridiculous DDR4 prices and complete lack of stock for 1060's. Like I said earlier in the thread this situation is really hurting business for us, I can't even build systems for family and friends right now because it just doesn't make sense.

Vega FE is still in stock at newegg for $950 (https://www.nowinstock.net/computers/videocards/amd/vegafrontieredition/) and you get more VRAM and get to use both professional drivers and gaming drivers. You can switch between the pro driver and the gaming driver with no problem. They also have the blockchain driver, but I haven't installed it because my Vega fee is pretty stable as it is.

And that price is simply crazy! I paid $750 for my Vega he just three weeks ago!

What weird oddities? I personally don't have any Vega FE so I don't have first hand experience. But my understanding of FE is that it supports both gaming driver and professional drivers. The only down side, if you are a pure gamer, is that FE drivers don't get release day gaming driver. FE drivers are released quarterly.

Well damn, I hope the situation improves or I'm probably out next go around for upgrades. Thankfully I'm sitting on a 1080 Ti for my main rig at 1440p with G-Sync and a 1080 running my HTPC on a 1080p OLED. Should be able to game with those for at least a year or two with all the goodies turned up at native resolution.

Ha Ha. That's a good one. I think I should create a crypto currency that will let people trade futures contract on GPU resale value and AI adviser helping new investors. I'm sure it will be a big hit when it goes to NASDAQ for IPO because it has all the buzz word going for it.

Thoughts like that crossed my mind, when I picked up an HP "Power Gaming" rig, with an i5-7400, GTX 1060 3GB OEM, 8GB DDR4 (2x4GB), and a 1TB HDD. I threw in an SSD, there was a spare bay and SATA port, although access for someone with larger hands, was tricky. It was a BF special for $500, that didn't sell out on BF, in fact when I picked mine up on Dec. 5th or so, they still had a pallet of them in the store. I couldn't have built one for that price, with those components.

Given the rise in video-card prices, I would indeed be tempted to pick up a few more, if I could get them at that price.

Thankfully, I managed to score a couple of brand-new cards from Newegg, for only slightly increased over MSRP prices (not third-party gouged).

Also, look for sales by AIBs. I bought 3 x 1060 6 GB cards from PNY directly for $280 each. No sales tax and free shipping. Granted that's still a bit over MSRP, but still better than anything on AMZ or Newegg right now. Also, they were in stock unlike others.

PNY's shop currently lists the cheapest 1060 6GB card for 499.99, and those are out of stock.

Newegg doesn't have a single GTX 1070 in stock for less than $900. That's a tad bit more than "$100 over its normal price".

When its out of stock the price goes up wildly, you can find ones for $100 over MSRP in plenty of places on the internet. Cherry picking one listing doesn't refute my point at all.

I just bought 2 1060 6GB for $269 each, somewhat reasonable pricing is out there if you can move fast once its listed.

If you are willing to spend that much money, just buy Titan Xp and mine coins for a month or two. You will make the difference back in a couple of month and have faster GPU. The high GPU price are hurting the little folks who can't afford the high end gear.
